Spacious, characterful medieval cottage sleeping six in the heart of Dunster

Dunster, Somerset, United Kingdom

The Oval is a charming medieval cottage in the heart of Dunster, full of character and atmosphere. Dating back several centuries, it feels reassuringly solid and traditional, with thick walls, wonky floors and a wonderfully cosy sense of history throughout. This is a cottage for guests who appreciate authenticity and comfort rather than modern minimalism.brSleeping up to six guests, the cottage works well for families, walking groups and friends holidaying together. The living room is warm and welcoming, centred around a wood-burning stove that makes the house especially inviting during cooler months. One of the bedrooms features stunning cruck beams and a beautiful four-poster bed, adding to the sense of period charm that runs through the house.brbrThe kitchen and dining areas are well equipped for everyday cooking and relaxed meals, and the layout suits both short breaks and longer stays. There are three bedrooms in total, including two with en-suite facilities, plus a family bathroom, giving flexibility and privacy for larger groups. The twin room uses the ‘Jack and Jill’ bathroom to the main bedroom which has a door on the landing as well as in the bedroom.brbrThe Oval also offers reliable WiFi via BT Business, making it suitable for keeping in touch or light remote working if needed. The sitting room has a smart TV with Netflix, providing an easy way to relax in the evenings after a day out exploring Dunster, Exmoor or the coast. There is also a library with books for all ages, as well as toys and games for children.brbrOutside, The Oval benefits from an enclosed ground-floor courtyard — ideal for children and dogs — as well as a sun deck accessed by steps, offering a quiet place to sit outside. The cottage is dog friendly, with a small charge of £30 per pet per stay.brbrSituated on West Street, right in the centre of the village, the cottage is just a few steps from pubs, tearooms, restaurants and independent shops, as well as the West Somerset Railway. Exmoor National Park is close by, making The Oval an excellent base for walking, exploring and slower-paced holidays.brbrParking is often at a premium in a village as popular and picturesque as Dunster, but The Oval includes two reserved parking spaces nearby, a valuable and much-appreciated feature in such a central location.brbrRated Four Star Gold by VisitEngland and consistently praised by returning guests, The Oval is a comfortable, well-loved historic cottage offering modern conveniences within a genuinely old building — a place to settle in, slow down and enjoy Dunster at its best.
