All homes were built in “the old style,” which required lots of laborers and masons and stone workers, carpenters and iron workers, artists and painters. brbrIn 2006 when we (Melissa and Bill) arrived, San Pancho still had about 4000 Mexicans and 250 expats. It also had one hotel, five restaurants, no internet, few houses for sale, and lots of parking spaces. In less than a week, we fell in love with the village. So, we bought land and began to design and build a home for our family – in “the old style.” It took three years.brbrSometime in 2007 the area north of Puerto Vallarta was declared an Economic Development Zone and re-named the Riviera Nayarit. (The first EDZ was the Maya Riviera, extending south from Cancun). Economic Development Zones are advertised as a place for developers to come and invest. Eventually developers did come, bought property, and began to build, but in “a new style.”brbrThe difference between the old style and the new was dramatized to me (William) one day. When “our men” were adding finishing touches to our home, we drove into town and for the first time, we saw a cement truck and a pumper blocking the road.
