Update January 2026 - We finished paving the driveway and installed a ping pong table in the rec room. Everything is working as expected on our first winter since completion. Heating and environmental controls are working as planned and house is very comfortable. Crews are also working on the heated storage space under the car port and we hope to have that finished off by Spring. brbrbrRe-building of Sunny Escape:brAfter 20 years of ownership of this 1940's former fishing cabin, we have decided to tear down the old home and rebuild on the same lot. We expect to make it available for vacation rental around September 2024, unless we are very lucky with demolition, construction, and provisioning. We hope that all of our former guests who have been so loyal and admiring for so many years will also be patrons of the new home. brbrThe story of Sunny Escape started in the late 1930s when Deep Creek Lake construction began as part of the the New Deal electrification program. However, the lake has always been a treasured getaway with it's natural shoreline, many coves, fishing, and relaxed atmosphere. Originally, just a one room stone cabin, it was added to in the late 1950s and turned into a year round lakefront home. However, it took many remodeling and sometimes the quality of these were not always as great as we would like. This has lead to maintenance problems, pests, and high heating bills. We finally decided, after several expensive renovations of our own to cut our loses and build a better Sunny Escape. brbrFor those who admired the original stone interior and exterior stone work and the wormy chestnut wood paneling, we realize those were hallmarks of the original building and we are taking as many steps as we can to retain and preserve these elements. We have stripped the chestnut panels and have contracted with a woodsmith to clean and prepare that lumber for reuse. brbrThe headlines about the new house is that it is designed according to passive house standards, that will reduce heating and air conditioning cost, while providing fresh air throughout the house year round. We have also designed it to be friendly for short term stays in ways that we have learned from your feedback over our ownership. This includes plenty of common space, four bedrooms, generous parking, and easy moving in and out. brbrThere will be four bedroom in the new house, two on the second floor and two on the first. Persons who have difficulties with stairs will have an easy time living entirely on the upper (street level) door, where the kitchen, dining, and great room provide plenty of space for gathering and relaxing with spectacular views of the lake. brbrAs always, we will have the dock with swim platform, easy access to the lake, fire pit, and hot tub. Laurel Grove is a large chalet situated on a beautiful mountain site with western exposures for perfect sunsets! Inside you will enjoy a warm and inviting mountain retreat with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, along with a sleeper sofa, to accommodate up to 12 guests. The outdoor space offers a large wrap-around deck, hot tub overlooking the mountains and valley, gas grill, backyard fire pit (fire wood provided) backed by lush forest, a basketball hoop, and ample parking for 4-5 vehicles. We love this place and think you will have an amazing visit too!brInside, the main level features a large open living/dining/kitchen area, with a classic mountain woodstove (firewood provided) as the focal point. Beautiful views abound from everywhere in the space. The kitchen is fully stocked for elaborate meals or a quick breakfast with coffee. The hallway on the main level leads to a full bathroom, a bedroom with 1 full bed, and another bedroom with bunk beds (full and twin) and another twin mattress. A large loft master suite offers a king bed, sitting area, and private bathroom, with great morning light and views of the valley and mountains. The lower level of the house is a favorite space for fun and entertainment with a pool table, toys and board games, an enormous selection of new and classic DVDs, and access to the outdoor hot tub area. The lower level also has a bedroom with a full bed and direct access to a third bathroom, as well a laundry room with washer and dryer. Ceiling fans are located throughout the house and bedrooms. We also offer a free electric vehicle (EV) charging station for guests with battery electric vehicles (BEV) or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). The charger is a Level 2 charger (32 AMP maximum current) with a common J1772 connector. brOur property is situated in gated land with 50+ miles of private gravel roads that offer excellent walking and biking through forests, streams, and scenic views, including access right to the Muddy Creek. The immediate surroundings include the waterfalls and swimming holes of Swallow Falls State Park (5 min.), the legendary Snaggy Mountain Area trails and natural rock mazes (2 min.) - a favorite of kids and adults alike, Herrington Manner State Park (5 min.), the Cranesville Natural Area (8 min.), and many state forest lands (1-10 min.).
