Roughly translated from the German, it means “Noble Ground” and there is no disagreement that the name seems to suit this village very well. The mountains do not soar up in front of the beholder; rather they can be enjoyed from a certain distance. The Engstligen Valley was of course populated long before the days of tourism and in the late Middle Ages, dwellers from nearby villages were drawn to the wildness of the valleys. The church at Adelboden dates back to 1433 and its frescos and church windows by the famous Swiss artist, Augusto Giacometti, are considered particularly beautiful.
