It was only natural that this former Gallo-Roman port, which would become a medieval city, should take the name of the patron saint of fishermen. In the 12ᵉ century, the port was filled in. The ramparts of the walled city fell in the 18ᵉ, with the development of the Place de la Bourse. What remained was the defensive Cailhau Gate, 35 metres high, and pedestrian or semi-pedestrian lanes whose names recall the district's commercial and craft vocation: rue des Argentiers, rue des Bahutiers, or rue du Chai des Farines.
