Maximum stay 1 month
The house and setting offer breathtaking views, with ever- changing colors on the landscape as the lush foliage blooms and the sun rises and sets. If I could give Barbara and her husband, Sandy, more than 5 stars for communication and the check-in process, I surely would. They are two very special people who made every effort to ensure a smooth transition to Nevis, before and during my stay. The views are awe-inspiring-from every angle in the house, and on the island itself. I captured nightly sunsets and countless rainbows. I stayed for a month, with visits from my daughter and her husband, and later on, my niece and her husband. Barbara and Sandy made everyone feel welcome. In fact, everyone on the island is warm, friendly and welcoming. This includes the resident horse, donkeys and parrot. And, I already miss the twice daily monkey show and herds of goats and sheep.
A beautiful spot with lovely and most accommodating hosts. In fact they became like family. Overall a wonderful stay!
Sandy & Barb were able to take us in on very short notice after another VRBO host cancelled our reservation less than 72 hours before departure (see details at bottom of review). Laurie C's experience describes pretty closely our own. The view from the dining/living area out over the pool to the gardens and over to St. Kitts is breathtaking. I can't imagine a more beautiful view anywhere in the Caribbean. We never tired of it. The house is older than most of the others in the Fern Hill area, so don't expect stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops. But what it lacks in modern conveniences it makes up for in charm. The donkeys. horse. parrot, and dog were so much fun to have around, and if you like monkeys...well, lets just say there isn't a shortage of them on this huge property. The best part of staying here is that you can almost imagine you have the whole side of the mountain to yourselves. You can see a couple of other rooftops, but any other houses in the area are mostly hidden by the dense vegetation (amazing trees and flowers of all types) on the property. Also, Barb and Sandy are genuine people. As well as being wonderful hosts and being very helpful, they were just great to have around. RE: Our bad VRBO experience: VRBO would not let me give a bad review of another house in this neighbourhood on that home's page, since you can only provide a review of somewhere you actually stayed, so I'm doing it here. We had booked Tree Frogs nearly three months in advance of our stay, and had paid in full, only to have the owner cancel less than 72 hours before our departure because of a double booking. There is no excuse for this, but unfortunately, neither VRBO nor the home owner is required to provide any compensation to us. So if you're considering staying at Tree Frogs, book at your own risk.
There are certainly more luxurious accommodations on the island but not many that could match the amazing site lines from this house. The value of the location, being up the hill, allows for viewing the foreground hillside, the water and the island of St. Kitts. Tropical rain or shine, there was always a visual show to enjoy watching the light change upon the land, sea and sky. If you love animals and miss the ones you left behind, you will be comforted by the two donkeys, one horse, parrot and Scooter, the very dignified Scottie that spent time in the house and on the front porch. We enjoyed the quiet daily routine of walking the long driveway and petting the animals while watching the monkeys scamper about the yard. All very tranquil, low key and peaceful. The house itself has it’s own charm with a relaxed, lived in look and feel. Everything is a bit rustic so do not expect modern surfaces and textiles. It is an open air house which allowed for both hummingbirds to visit up close and also mosquitoes. Bug spray is nessessary. The owners, Barb and Sandy, could not have been kinder nor more helpful. They stay close by and were helpful whenever we needed information or a few funny local stories. This is something that you would not get at a typical resort. I fell ill during the stay and they did their best to help me. We originally booked a car through Hertz but cancelled after learning about a local car rental source. In retrospect, we may have been better off sticking to that as we went through three different cars each having some sort of issue. Once you drive the roads on Nevis, you understand why the cars are so beat up. Something to consider. The owners were excellent on getting us from the airport to the house. Our friends flew in later that week and arrived close to midnight. Sandy made sure that they were picked up and that a water taxi would still bring them that late at night. After driving the first day, we made the wise choice to take a taxi for our dinner reservations which were all over the island. Just too dark and curvy roads plus there are goats, cows, donkeys and dogs on the road. Nevis is a very special place that was low key, full of beauty and people who were kind and helpful. Hope this is helpful to you!
We absolutely loved staying here. The home has everything we could have needed and the property is beautiful. It was private, remote, and safe. Barbara and Sandy are amazing hosts and were so incredibly helpful with our trip. We were having trouble booking a Winnair flight...and they drive down to the airport and made all arrangements for us before we arrived. They really are just fantastic. The view is amazing, and we LOVED the dogs, the horse, and the donkeys on the property. Our favorite beach on the island is right down the hill. Always quiet and relatively empty. I also highly recommend the hike to Nevis peak. We are retuning very soon. Thanks so much for a wonderful week. :)
5 Stars!!! If you love nature, serenity, privacy, spectacular views, getting off the beaten path, and a change from the typical tourist accommodations, then this lovely home and property is for you. With an open air concept, you'll share the central living area with beautiful birds trying to nest in the chandeliers, and an occasional Monkey peeking at you from the roof......not to mention the owner's incredibly brilliant and welcoming pups, and their adorable donkeys and horse also on property. The two master suites are charming and comfortable, as is the entire house, and everything you need is provided. The views are stunning, and everything is within driving distance. Try to find Lovers Beach while there. Not easy to find, but well worth it if you want your own beautiful private tropical spot on the island. The owners, Barbara and Sandy, are just simply the best people I've met in a very long time. They will ensure your comfort and provide any information you need to make your stay on this very special little island memorable. My visit to Nevis, Estate of Mind, and meeting Barbara, Sandy, and their four-legged family, and many friends will always be a cherished memory.
My husband and I recently stayed at Estate of Mind for our honeymoon and had an extraordinary time. The house was beautiful and charming, the view amazing and our hosts became our friends as well as guides as they shared what to seek out and avoid (e.g. Norwegian meatballs) when it came to food, places, etc. Every night we watched the sky come to life with a different sunset and every morning we awoke with clouds skittering across the sky, getting in place for the new day. In between we visited all the various sites on Nevis, from craggy coast to smooth shore, lush rain forest to crumbling sugar mills and plantations. The hosts volunteer with the local humane society so there were four legged creatures around should you want to get your fix of dog or donkey or parrot (which I did!), but only come if invited (which they were!). It was truly a magical experience, one we will never, ever forget. Thank you dear hosts and friends.
My husband and I have stayed at Estate of Mind three times now, each time more magic than the last. We have enjoyed the fantastic views of St Kitts while we sip our rum punch by the pool. The fact that the house is up on the side of the mountain provides a welcome breeze on a hot day. We just love the owners Sandy and Barbara, and their friendly pack of pets, which include, dogs, horses, and a parrot. The house is conveniently situated near to beaches and restaurants. The airport and port are a short drive away. With any luck we will return to this magic house soon.
This is the second time we have stayed at Estate of mind, this time it was because we wanted to get married in Nevis. Sandy and Barbara were brilliant, they organized everything from the wedding on the beach to the reception at the house. What a great time. we love the location of the property and my little boy especially loves the animals there which are all very friendly.. we will definitely be going back.
We recently returned form Nevis in March 2012 and our stay at Estate of MInd. The challange of getting to Nevis with the taxi ride from the airport to the and the boat ride across the channel was only the beginning. We were met at Oualie Beach by Raymond from Albern Car rental. He was so nice to lead us up to the house which is an adventure on Nevis roads. The property is definitely seculuded. The hous and view were spetacular. The weather perfect. The open concept to the house fit the site so well. The monkeys ate our soap at the outside shower. Evenings were the best with the view of the stars and St. Kitts complemented by the sheer quiet and ever present breeze. Barb and Sandy were so helpful without being intrusive. Our only complaint, though minor was that the pool temperature could have been warmer. But, e would go back in a heart beat!
