Charlestown, Nevis
Hamilton Lodge is a charming home set in 2 acres of tropical gardens. This house has a 33 foot salt water pool and is a five minute drive away from the local town of Charlestown, the four seasons resort and stunning beaches.
The shaded wide verandah has extensive panoramic views including majestic sunsets over the ocean! The open plan kitchen allows for a spacious dining experience complete with a large island opening into the living room. Master bedroom is air conditioned and en-suite. The house has two twin bedrooms and one master bedroom. The master bedroom is en suite, whilst the two remaining bedrooms share a bathroom. The kitchen is open plan connecting to the living room, which then opens onto the large terrace and poolside. There is a dining table within the main living area and an additional dining area outside on the terrace.
Unfortunately this property appears to be significantly under maintained and managed which made for an uncomfortable stay. Prior to arrival host was insistent on communicating through whatsapp which we did not have access to right away. Information about check in was not really provided until day of - after much insistence- which due to travel challenges - created extra stress and concern about the property. Upon arrival and meeting with property manager - it was stressed that due to a big storm the day prior - which there was very heavy rain and winds- resulted in issues with home. Pool was unusable, looking like it had not been cleaned in long time and water apparently emptied out almost 2 feet from where it should be. Tree was down blocking drive- which is a bright spot- because that was addressed and cleaned up by the next day - But our biggest upset was not what could have happened in a storm but the overall keep of the home. We arrived to an almost full garbage can, cleaning products (glad it was being cleaned!) but no additional trash bags. so we bought some. Ran out of toilet paper on last day - could not find any more around. There were several personal items around the home- appearing as though it was not sorted out properly, loose change around on tables, even the owners personal driver license on the night stand with other personal affects. The shared bathroom toliet seat was so loose it was unable to be used safely., and not able to be flushed easily as the water needed to be turned on and off to prevent it from flooding the house - so we were told. So elderly mother and young son utilized master bath toilet - which was fine - but disruptive as they both were needing to use it through the night walking by my husband and I sleeping. Owner did offer option of 'other' space on property - which was kind - but no air conditioning for my elderly mother was worse than not having a toilet handy. But this toliet issue was not due to storm or new- so not sure why it wasnt addressed previously. Listing mentions a comfortable and well outfitted kitchen fit for a chef - so happens my hubby is a chef - and I can report that - although there was some nice kitchen aid tools around - the gas stove top was not operational - and the single burner hot plate cooker took a long time to even boil water - so barely usable. Oven was functional - refrigerator appeared new. We did not dare try the dishwasher or washing machine.Trampoline? NO :(
Unfortunately this property is not as described. The two guest bedrooms with twin beds were not pictured in the listing so we knew we were taking a gamble. The bed linens were not clean and when we went to change them ourselves, we found that the fresh linens in the closet were also not clean. The kitchen is described as being well-equipped but unfortunately the refrigerator and microwave did not work. We contacted the owner and the refrigerator was repaired while we were there but it caused some food to go to waste. In the description it mentioned that the property is air conditioned, which it is, but it can only be used at night. This is fine because we were out of the cottage during the day, but the oscillating fans and ceiling fans did not work, so in the main living area it was very hot in the evenings. The description also states that the house assures complete privacy which is not the case. There are no blinds for the front windows. We also had an incident with someone having access to the other cottage on the property without the owner being aware of it. This person came to the cottage we were staying in and asked for specific alcohol from the bar cart and also mentioned specific things some of the girls on our trip had packed. Making it obvious that he had been snooping around the main cottage while we were away for the day. All of these issues have been brought to the owners attention but I have not received a response. We loved Nevis but we would not return to this property.
House was as advertised. Great location, convenient to all beaches, grocery stores and equidistant to the best restaurants on both sides of the island. Beautiful large property with stunning ocean views. West facing for great sunsets. Spent most time outdoors on the covered patio and contemporary pool. Bring bug spray, NEVIS mosquitoes are everywhere, especially at night.
Magical to be able to sit on the balcony with a gin and tonic and watch the amazing sunset over the sea. Lovely house and gardens. All in all lovely place to have a relaxing comfortable holiday. Nevis itself is a relaxed island with attractive restaurants serving delicious food.
