Charlevoix, Michigan
Welcome to Stewart's Folie, a renovated 1870s farmhouse on two acres on the north shore of Lake Charlevoix. A beautiful natural setting that is perfect for a vacation to be remembered. This heavily wooded shoreline property has been preserved in its natural state with rocky natural shoreline and native vegetation, and in the same family for over a century. A great location to get away and relax.
Plan now for a winter getaway up north! Spend the Christmas or New Year's holidays here to enjoy northern Michigan winter sports, the peaceful north woods and the cozy wood stove.
We just opened our 2024 calendar, with 6,- 7-, or 8 day-minimum week-long stays, usually from Friday to Friday.
This historic farmhouse was moved in 1950 to its current location by the owner's parents and renovated as a summer cottage and later as a year-round home. Renovated again in 2013-2017, the home now has an open floor plan, wood cookstove, and geothermal heating and cooling. The large walk-out deck looks out over Lake Charlevoix for beautiful sunsets, great for family gatherings.
Walk down the path to the shore and private dock. The property includes 210 feet of natural shoreline along a private lakefront. The secluded setting is perfect for relaxation, bird watching, swimming, boating, cookouts and evenings watching the stars. (No fireworks allowed). Attach your boat to our 75-lb mushroom mooring (summer only). Mooring is not available after Sept 1.
The house was renovated with alternative energy and old-fashioned quality in mind. The kitchen has a farmhouse sink and wood stove. A large island provides cooking and prep space, with a sink and two-burner Wolf induction cooktop. You can also cook and bake using the wood stove, Breville countertop electric oven, or out on the deck using the charcoal grill or Sun Oven solar oven.
A circular drive out front has parking for 4 cars. Enjoy the kitchen gardens filled with herbs and vegetables.
Guests may use the family tennis court for tennis or pickle ball. (There are pickle ball lines on the court, but only a tennis net). The court is shared with our family members. Pickle ball equipment for four, and two tennis rackets are provided, but please bring extra rackets, balls, and your tennis shoes.
Wifi is available throughout the house, and a desk workspace is in the living room.
Bedrooms: Three of the four bedrooms have lake views. Each bedroom has its own sink. The downstairs bedroom has a modified queen bed and door to the deck overlooking the lake. Three bedrooms upstairs have original 1950s wallpaper intact. The largest bedroom has an attached half-bathroom with tub/shower and sink. A separate water closet in the hallway has a toilet accessible to all three bedrooms. The two double beds and one (modified) queen bed are handmade luxury mattresses made locally by Beds By Design. In addition a blow-up air mattress (double) is available.
Fresh linens, towels, beach towels and some toiletries (toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, shampoo, conditioner, dish soap, and handmade natural hand soaps) are provided, but there is no maid service.
Downstairs, the main bathroom has a tiled walk-in shower and laundry with washer and dryer. Laundry detergent provided. Go solar and use the clothesline for fresh air-dried laundry. Iron and ironing board provided. Beach towels and hair dryer provided.
A detached "playhouse" is filled with toys for children, a bed for reading stories or relaxing away from the rest of your group, (no overnight sleeping permitted however), and extra outdoor folding chairs, an extra folding table, life jackets and paddles.
Pets are limited to two small or medium sized dogs. Sorry, no cats are permitted. We have our own small dog next door. For your dog's safety, at night and early morning, always use a leash as we have nocturnal animals in the woods. Please pick up after your pet.
The location is six miles from Charlevoix, and 12 miles from Boyne City.
Two kayaks with paddles, and some life vests for adults and children are provided. Please feel free to bring your own life vests for toddlers/infants, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards. If you wish to bring a sailboat or other boat, please contact us ahead of booking. Our boat mooring is a 75-pound mushroom type. A dinghy is also available for shared use.
Guests can access the tennis court (shared with family members), surrounding wooded drives, and private lakefront with swimming and boating dock. (On July 4th, the tennis court is not available).
Please note we have a strict no-smoking policy anywhere on the property, (inside and outside). Thank you.
Other protocols for COVID: We now have contact-free arrival. Please bring masks for your group. Soap, gloves, and hand sanitizer for outings are provided.
This is a house in the woods on Lake Charlevoix. Please respect the lake and waterways, the wildlife and native vegetation, taking care not to damage paths, plant life and trees. Firewood is provided for the wood stove and campfires on the shore. Please make sure all fires are attended at all times and completely out when done. We've taken care to preserve the surrounding natural environment. Please leave only footprints.
Thank you and hope you'll book Stewart's Folie for a safe and enjoyable stay.
This property is perfect if you are looking for seclusion but still close to town. Bring water shoes if you plan to swim here, its rocky. However, there are ample sandy beaches near by. We caught tons of small mouth bass off the dock. Nothing better than making memories!!!
steward’s folie is a rare and special place that anyone who loves northern michigan would dream to stay at. drinking coffee in the morning and wine in evening while sitting by the lake is real life heaven. location is perfectly convenient- secluded and private while simultaneously being near everything. we loved it.
Holiday weekend on Labor Day got to jet ski and swim in lake Charlevoix had a campfire down by the water location had everything we needed a great holiday weekend thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us
Charming renovated farmhouse right on the water. The pickelball court was very convenient!
My husband and I brought our three “adult” twenty something children and our two dogs. We stayed at Stewart’s Follie for six nights. The three bedrooms upstairs were perfect for the kids and my husband and I stayed on the main floor. There was ample space for everyone. We enjoyed our meals on the back deck overlooking the lake. The cottage was well stocked with dishes, towels, blankets etc and labeled perfectly so you can easily find everything you need. The kayaks and pickleball courts were an added bonus. The house is exactly as it is advertised. It is comfortable, homey, and perfectly situated just a few minutes from downtown Charlevoix. We’ll definitely be back.
My goodness what a wonderful stay. The house is full of character and in a stunning location. LuAnne was very helpful before and during our visit. Can’t recommend this pace highly enough!!
Spent an incredible week with family, ages 13-adult. House was beautiful, very cozy and host was welcoming. Views were breathtaking. Dock was perfect to lounge on and fish from. Sitting area and picnic table by the water were perfect to enjoy the sun and the sunset. House had all needed amenities including lots of board games and puzzles for rainy days. Tennis court was an added bonus. Would highly recommend for all ages!
Had a great time spending time with my family here.
This was our second time staying at Stewart's Folie and we had a great time! We love traveling up to Northern Michigan and can't wait for our next trip. The house was fantastic again and kept warm by the wood-burning stove. This is a great vacation spot with fantastic scenery and lake access.
Excellent quiet get-away with a charming rustic appeal. The old farmhouse setting had plenty of room, wonderful view of Lake Charlevoix, well equipped kitchen with outdoor grill and an accompanying vegetable and herb garden. If it hadn't rained everyday of our stay, our visit would have been that much more enjoyable.
We had a lovely stay on beautiful Lake Charlevoix! Our host was so helpful and accommodating. Highly recommended.
Very clean, well kept place. Did a nice job renovating
This is an old farm house that has been redone. Lots of character. Beautiful setting and love that they have kept the shoreline natural. Small deck by the lake is awesome place to watch sunset.
We've been renting cottages in the Lake Charlevoix area for a few years, and Stewart's Folie is the nicest place we've ever stayed. The house is well-equipped, comfortable and charming, and we loved learning about its history. Of course, the best part was the rustic natural shoreline-- we barely saw another person, and it truly felt like our own private paradise. I do suggest bringing water shoes, as the beach is rocky. (But look down-- many of those rocks are Petoskey stones!)
The cottage is lovely in a way that reminds me of the summer places of my youth - a screen door that slams, painted wood dresser drawers that stick a little, quilts on the beds, a bountiful garden, well water, dishwashing by hand. I loved dumping my fruit and veggie scraps in the compost bucket and hanging my towels on the clothes line. The modern touches are really thoughtful - the furniture is solid and the appliances are top notch. I loved using the Le Crueset cookware. The reading lamps are in just the right spots. There are plenty of outlets and the wifi is good enough. There is no TV but we were able to watch movies and keep up with the Tour de France on our laptops. We stayed with my daughter and her husband and two-year old son. Every morning we watered the garden and walked to the tennis court to throw balls around. A ton of vintage Fisher Price toys in the playhouse kept us well occupied. We spent a lot of time throwing rocks into the lake. It's not an easy place to swim with a toddler, but we did take him out in the kayaks (with his own life jacket) and splashed around quite a bit. One thing to note about summer in the Lake Charlevoix area over the July 4th and Boyne Thunder weekends - they are crowded (and noisy). Plan on eating at home or making reservations before you come. We've been coming for years and years so knew the score and still it was difficult. The hosts are terrific - I look forward to staying with them again.
Gorgeous location, very spacious house. Charming and quirky, but well appointed.
The house is very nice and the hosts are extremely personable. I would definitely stay here again!!
The owner was really great. Very cool historical house. Lots of history books and children's books inside. Great Dock! Very quiet peaceful setting.
The setting is relaxing. The owners are attentive and make check-in a breeze. They seem like great people. The house and deck are even more lovely than the pictures suggest. Worth every penny. We plan to return.
