A Zen, Mid-Century Retreat On 6 Acres

Whether it’s wine, waterfalls, or unwinding that brings you to the Finger Lakes, Shangri-Lodge will help you have a trip to remember.

We remodeled this 6-bedroom, 4-bath mid-century style home in 2013 and 2014, living in the house while we worked. We loved it so much, we were reluctant to move when we finished. But we wanted to share this special place with guests even more!

Shangri-Lodge sits on 6 pastoral acres less than 10 minutes by car from downtown Ithaca, quaint Trumansburg, and the Cayuga and Seneca Wine Trails. Summer evenings are wonderful at Shangri-Lodge, with a fire crackling in the fire pit and the kids chasing lightning bugs under a big, star-filled sky. The year-round outdoor hot tub for 7 near the burbling creek provides another wonderful spot to relax.

LIVING & DINING - An open floor-plan, many windows and skylights overlooking the property, and a great room under beamed ceilings make Shangri-Lodge feel expansive, but we arrange the furnishings into conversation areas to keep it intimate. Grab a plush blanket from the cabinet and settle in on the sofas and chairs in front of the wood burning fireplace and smart tv.

Next to the dining room, a second conversation area features four chairs gathered around a plush ottoman, so you can put your feet up together and plan your adventures. The dining table, illuminated by statement lighting, seats 12 before a lovely view of the grounds.

Our dream kitchen lives at Shangri-Lodge. Bring your favorite recipe (or try one of ours) and let the kitchen be your canvas: it has a 48 4-burner gas stove with griddle, a professional double fridge/freezer, quartz countertops, and cabinets fully stocked for chefs with all utensils and small appliances.

A huge custom island takes center stage in the kitchen. With its five barstools, it’s the place to gather for morning coffee and, in the evening, uncorking your haul from the wineries. (Don’t worry, the whisper-quiet Bosch SilencePlus dishwasher won’t interrupt your after-dinner conversation.)

On the lower level you will find our family room, with a smart 65 flat-screen TV, sofa and chairs, pool table and a door that leads directly to the hot tub. In wintertime, simply walk out the door and take three steps into the steamy water. A stack of fresh towels waits for you in the cabinet.

BEDROOMS & BATH - Shangri-Lodge sleeps 13 people, all in ultra-comfortable beds. Five of the six bedrooms are on the ground floor, with two king beds and one queen bed on one side of the house and two queens on the other - a great setup for privacy.

One of the queen bedrooms has an en-suite bath with a remodeled walk-in shower. Three more ground-floor bedrooms are situated around a shared bath with a tub/shower combo. A third bath is located near the kitchen, across from the full-size laundry area that guests are welcome to use.

Upstairs, find the large, lofted sixth bedroom, with a queen bed and a separate twin. The convenience of an en-suite bathroom completes this suite. Wood-paneled walls and skylights to create a cozy, cabin feel in this space. There’s even a writing desk in case you get inspired. Or check your email; the whole house has Wifi hubs.

OUTDOOR AREA - Shangri-Lodge sits on 6 acres of former farmland. On the house side, you'll find the creek and the fire pit with 12 Adirondack chairs and lots of room for kiddos to play on. Across the road is our sister property Indulgence, which also has six bedrooms and sits on 8+ acres including a creek-fed pond. If what you seek is an easy, quiet escape from the city, you'll find it here.

THE LOCATION - Don't let its rural setting fool you: Shangri-Lodge sits in an ideal spot, less than 15 minutes from nearly every can't-miss attraction in the Ithaca area, and just five minutes from downtown Ithaca itself. Head into downtown for a foodie's dream date at one of Ithaca's many farm-to-table restaurants on Restaurant Row. Or take your group out for brunch at a low-key local's diner.

Downtown Trumansburg, a quaint creekside village with restaurants, pubs, a bowling alley, farmer’s market, pizzeria, grocery and liquor stores and local shops, is just a 10-minute drive from the Lodge. Start with espresso drinks at Gimme Coffee, then try the eclectic breakfasts (like kimchi pancakes) at Creekside Cafe.

If wine brings you to the Finger Lakes, you're in luck. There are over 50 nearby wineries to taste test your way through, all of them easily accessible. Cayuga Wine Trail, the oldest wine trail in the country, is a 10-minute drive from Shangri-Lodge, and the Seneca Lake and Keuka Wine Trails are a short drive away, too.

At Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, Robert Treman and Watkins Glen State Parks (all within a half hour or less) hiking trails, rushing waterfalls and scenic gorges await. Don’t leave without visiting Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes. Paddle out from the public pier on a kayak, cool down on the swimming beach or hop aboard a wine-tasting boat to sample some of the region’s best wines while enjoying its most stunning views.

Great flow, easy living, light, spaciousness, the outdoors, all of these factors make Shangri-Lodge an amazing house for people to come together and enjoy each other's company.

We loved our stay at the Shangri Lodge over the week of Thanksgiving. 8 of us enjoyed all the space! The kitchen was wonderful to prepare lovely breakfasts, gourmet dinners, and of course Thanksgiving dinner. Beautiful areas to sit, visit, and relax. Lovely bedrooms for rest.

A clean well-appointed house that has an ideal kitchen, dining area and living room for a large group. And the kind, helpful hosts round it all out.

The location was amazing and the property had so many amenities that we enjoyed. My daughter and i love to cook and so we cooked every day for 11 people. The kitchen was substantial and well supplied. There is a fire pit that we used several nights as well, and the property is sufficiently remote that we could gaze at the stars. The town is reasonably close as are innumerable wineries, creameries, farm stands, and so on.

Check In was absolutely seamless. The home was so perfect for our large group of adults and children of different ages. The older boys loved the pool table and the younger ones enjoyed the hot tub. We all enjoyed the beautiful fire pit and gorgeous lawn. The best part though was the incredible kitchen with everything you need to cook and serve wonderful meals. The kitchen layout and organization really made mealtimes such a pleasure. The hosts could not be more accommodating to all of our questions and we would recommend this house to anyone looking to spend quality time with family and friends. The location is also amazing, so close to many parks, hiking, biking, boating etc. Just a really special place!

Our extended multi-generational family really loved our stay at the Shangri Lodge. There was plenty of room for us to spread out, a well-equipped kitchen, a field for the kids & grown-ups to play in, and all of the fun amenities on the listing. The house is close to several State parks, the town of Ithaca, and the University.

Twelve of us stayed for a long graduation weekend and the home could not have been better. It is spotlessly clean and so well-furnished and equipped - the pictures do not do it justice. Tons of space to spread out and gorgeous views and countryside around, but it took us twelve minutes to get to downtown Ithaca

Beautiful, spacious home with a modern country feel. Plenty of room to spread out and table space to gather around. Wood fireplace kept us cozy during a very cold, snowy weekend. Mitch plowed and shoveled the driveway several times for us. They provided every amenity that we needed to prepare our meals, I look forward to going back!!

A superb place, beautifully sited, furnished, and maintained. Plenty of common space, a well equipped and organized kitchen, lovely grounds, hot tub, and a short drive down the hill to Ithaca. Highly recommended.

We spent 4 days with extended family at this beautiful home. It had everything we needed to make large meals and enjoy time together - games, a wonderful grill, outdoor activities, and plenty of seating. The internet is a bit unreliable so my husband had difficulty with a few work calls / meetings. And the streaming TV channels did not always work (but we didn't really need TV in this relaxing of a place!). We would definitely visit again!

We loved the furnishings throughout the house, the library room adjacent to the dining table for conversations while playing cards or the fire pit gathering area. Comfortable beds with crisp linens. Bathrooms were clean and fluffy towels were provided. Beautiful kitchen, and the grounds and flowers were gorgeous. Also besides the fire pit area there were decks on the front with comfortable deck chairs and a large table outside on the covered back deck. We used apples from the tree by the fire pit to make apple crumble. Loved the farm and Cider House tour at the Fingerlakes Cider house. Also went to the Ithaca Farmers Market on Saturday. The only problem we encountered with the home was WiFi strength, and the owners did try to help. Maybe a posting on the download and upload strength of the WiFi on the site so people are aware would be helpful.

This house was perfect for our group of 6 adults. Very spacious. Kitchen was amazingly large- we had 4 people cooking and didn’t get in each other’s way. Lots of very useful kitchen tools. Fresh coffee and filters. Front porch with many chairs and a gorgeous view. We used the hot tub Twice. Nice to have dedicated towels right near the hot tub. Rules were clearly identified so we could honor the wishes of the owner (who was easy to communicate with and met us at the house to explain everything). Great location- quiet and easy to get downtown . We came for a biking event and appreciated that the house was located on a road that was quiet so we could just ride from there. Downstairs pool table was nice but we did not use it. Lots of games (we had no time to play). WiFi iffy but that’s a result of a mountain area!) 5 stars

House and property was amazing, host was very responsive and helpful and location was optimal to explore Ithaca and Finger Lakes area. We did have some intermittent issues with WiFi that was a little frustrating a times and there was a little inconsistency in the listing/information regarding if the property sleeps 12, 13 or 14 with additional fees added for more than 12. Property owner met us at the house upon check in to show us around and answer questions. Overall a great experience and would recommend.

We had a long weekend with our family of 12 +3 small children. The house was spacious enough to very comfortably accommodate us. We loved the outdoor seating at front and back for eating/relaxing and enjoying the beautiful views. The host/owner was very welcoming - and also accommodating of our slightly late departure! Would love to stay again!
