Summary:

The ocean is your backyard -- hear the waves from every room in this coastal haven. A warm fire and ocean views anchor cozy evenings in. Your deck is a front-row seat to the Pacific. Room for 8 in this 3-bedroom home. Near Shell Beach tidepools. The Sonoma Coast's best-kept secret is waiting for you. The rhythm of the waves sets the pace here -- unhurried mornings, lingering sunsets, deep sleep. Summer fog burns off by midday, leaving warm afternoons perfect for trail hikes and tidepooling.

The Space:

This is a place to wake up to a view of the ocean and cap your evenings by barbecuing, dining, and watching striking sunsets outside on the expansive deck.

This multi-level home boasts an enviable oceanfront location close to the midpoint of Sea Ranch, with the Bluff Trail right outside your back door. Shell Beach - a local favorite for tidepooling - is half a mile north and Stengel Beach is less than a mile south. You'll be just over a mile from the Ohlson Recreation Center and its heated outdoor pool, saunas, and tennis courts. Small-town Gualala's markets, galleries, and conveniences are only five miles north as well.

Enter by way of a private, sheltered courtyard to be greeted by a living space with lofty ceilings, details of richly hued wood, and a back wall of picture windows framing the ocean and open meadow. Curl up in the window seat with a good book and the gas fireplace flickering, use the telescope to glimpse passing seals and whales, and set up a favorite board game at the dining room table.

The kitchen is uniquely equipped for family holidays and special get-togethers, offering a wealth of cooking and baking tools that include double ovens and a six-burner gas stove. There's a gas grill and an outdoor dining area on the deck overlooking the ocean, and an inviting den back inside where you can watch DVDs late into the night.

All of the bedrooms have views of the ocean, each in its own wing of the house.

The Neighborhood:

Stock up in Gualala, just 10 minutes south, where you'll find grocery stores, restaurants, a hardware store, and gas. Bodega Bay is a beautiful drive for fresh seafood.

Getting Around:

Sea Ranch is about 2.5 hours north of San Francisco -- take Highway 101 to Highway 1 for one of California's most scenic coastal drives. The nearest airport is Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa, roughly 90 minutes east. A car is the way to go for exploring the area.

Other Things to Note:

Sea Ranch has three recreation centers with heated pools, saunas, and tennis courts. Access passes are provided with your stay -- check availability upon arrival as these shared amenities can be popular during peak times.

Exterior lighting is minimal by design to preserve the stunning dark sky -- bring a flashlight for evening walks and enjoy some of the best stargazing on the California coast.

Keep your eyes on the horizon from December to April -- gray whales migrate just offshore, and this property has a front-row seat. Visit in spring and the meadows explode with wildflowers. April through June is peak bloom season along the Sonoma Coast. The warmest months are June through September. Expect coastal fog most mornings that gives way to sunny afternoons.

Cell service can be spotty along the coast. The home has WiFi for staying connected.

The location of the house is unmatched, you can literally sit in the living room and see whales in the ocean. Amazingly beautiful quiet area. The house is a good size and nicely decorated for the most part. The telescope did not work. And as others have noted the sheets for the pullout bed are very hard to find. FYI we found them in the walk-in kitchen pantry in a bin stuffed under the shelf. The house is beautiful, but it needs a deep clean. Lots of areas behind furniture with dustballs, light switches and kitchen areas not wiped down etc. There was one major issue during our stay. The smaller bathroom, which is downstairs from the main living area, was covered with tiny black flying insects (smaller than fruit fly) when we arrived. We understand this is a nature area, but the room was essentially unusable. It seemed they were either coming in through the screen or hatching somehwere in the room (vents?). Anyway, kind of a bummer. Property manager sent someone to clean up who only cleaned up some of it. The room was still not useable. We were told we could get a partial refund but then never heard back. I might think twice about renting from Vacasa again after that experience. In short, a beautiful, spacious house in a gorgeous location, but with some challenges in property management.

The house was fabulous! Well located, gorgeous and well stocked. We had a little problem with garbage that was left but they property owner took care of it when I reported it. Also, using the pool was confusing- and the people there were very rude. But other than those small details, the house was divine and we had a lovely family thanksgiving.

Very private, well decorated and well stocked, comfortable home. We loved every minute of our stay here. Easy walk along the bluffs to Shell Beach, and a little further, a marine preserve. So much wildlife right outside - deer, cormorants and other coastal birds, a fox, and many seals. We will definitely be back to this tranquil retreat.

Spent the weekend here with a group of girl friends, then my parents came up. It was lovely. Spectacular views from every room. Well equipped kitchen. Slightly odd layout - but so it goes with many Sea Ranch houses.

Positives: overall, the layout is very accommodating. It was very comfortable for seven adults and two children. The view was very good. We enjoyed our stay. Kitchen: the kitchen was well stocked. It has everything that you would ever need for meal preparation. Laundry: they did supply laundry detergent, and that was helpful. Negatives: Master bedroom: this was a disappointment. The mattress was hard and not comfortable. The pillows were horrible. They were double size pillows that were hard and difficult to use. Most of us would like one pillow for our head and another to put between the knees or one to hug. This was not possible. My suggestion is to buy different pillows. There were not enough pillows and blankets for the pull out sofa bed. That was disappointing. Cleanliness: overall the place is very clean, but there were cobwebs all over the place and dead spiders. There was only one Kleenex box for the entire unit. There were no instructions to explain how to operate the gas, fire pit, or the outdoor gas grill. Also, the inside fireplace was not operational. The manual indicated that garbage was supposed to be picked up on Wednesday. It was not picked up. Animals got into the garbage on several nights and spread it over the driveway.
