Westcliffe, Colorado
The space:
Bear Basin Mountain House overlooks the Bear Basin Valley with stunning views of the Sangre de Cristo Range to the west and the Collegiate Peaks to the northwest. Located just 11 miles east of the picturesque town of Westcliffe, CO, this convenient location offers easy access to the Sangre de Cristo range and is just minutes away from fantastic hiking in the Wet Mountains. An ideal getaway spot for those seeking solitude and a great basecamp for all your mountain adventures.
The Mountain House sits atop Tonso Peak on 70 acres of pine and aspen forest. This is a mountain setting yet very accessible. We are located just four miles from paved road and accessed via county-maintained roads, making year-round access one of its best features.
Guest access:
Guests will have access to the entire house and patio area as well as the forested grounds. Take a walk on our 2-miles of hiking trails and enjoy the birds and wildlife that inhabit the area. There are closets and dressers in the bedrooms for guest use. Help yourself to any of the food items and spices in the kitchen cabinets.
Interaction with guests:
I like to give people their space but am available to assist when needed. I do not live on the property full time but will sometimes be staying in the guesthouse nearby while I am working around the property. If I am not present I will be reachable by cell phone.
Other things to note:
Google maps is OK as far as the subdivision gate. After that it is incorrect. VRBO will send you detailed driving directions the day before your arrival. Please use these directions to make sure you don't have any trouble getting here.
A note for winter guests: There are a couple of things you should know if you plan to book with us between Nov 1 - May 1. Our guest house sits at 8900 ft. elevation. Although we do not get lots of snow until spring, we often get a few inches at a time throughout the winter and while we do have road maintenance, it may be icy in spots and difficult or impossible for a rear wheel drive vehicle to make it up our lane. I strongly recommend you have a front wheel drive or four wheel drive vehicle to get here during the winter months.
House Rules:
Self check-in with lockbox
- Must be at least 25 to book or have no negative feedback from previous VRBO hosts. All guests must read the house manual upon arrival. The manual contains simple and important instructions for operating the various systems on the property and keeping them in good working order. We ask simply for courteous, neighborly behavior and respect for our home and property. Smoking of any kind is not allowed, including marajana. Well-behaved children are welcome. Historically, most damage occurs from kids so please watch them closely. We have them too ;-) Pets are not allowed in the guest house or on the premises. Please keep the property and all furnishings in good order.
You agree not to use the premises for any activities or purposes that violates any criminal law or governmental regulation or to engage in any illegal activity while on property – such use or activity will result in immediate eviction and forfeiture of all fees.
There is no daily housekeeping service. Linens and bath towels are provided. Please do not remove towels, linens, or any other items from the house.
The property is on a well and septic systems. The septic system is very effective; however, it will clog up if improper material is flushed. Do not flush anything other than toilet paper. No feminine products or baby wipes should be flushed at anytime. If it is found that these products have been flushed and clogged the septic system, you will be charged damages of up to the cost of repair which could be upwards of $500. We would contact you to discuss, if the issue arises. Do not flush any toxins.
The owners are not responsible for any accidents, injuries or illness that occurs while on the premises or its facilities. The owners are not responsible for the loss of personal belongings or valuables of the guest. By accepting this reservation, it is agreed that all guests are expressly assuming the risk of any harm arising from their use of the premises or others whom they invite to use the premise.
Damages to Premises: Should guest, or guest's invitees, cause any damages to the premises, or contents thereof, that require repair or replacement, guest authorizes owner to charge the guest's credit card for all damages. All damages must be reported to the owner before check-out and upon vacating, any missing or damaged property or inventory will be charged via your credit card on file, the amounts required to conduct the necessary repairs, or if necessary to replace the missing items at full replacement value within 14 days.
Lastly, we will do everything we can to ensure you have a good experience and a good stay. Inevitably there will be power outages, equipment failures, or any number of unforeseen events that we have no control over. If any issue arises please give us the opportunity to work out a solution with you before resorting to negative feedback. Thanks for staying with us!
Amazing getaway! Peaceful and quiet. Beautiful scenery and sunsets. Plenty of space for our family to hang out. Clean and loaded with anything we needed. A wonderful place to use as a getaway in the Colorado mountains!
We have family nearby who host Thanksgiving, but don’t have enough room for all guests so we needed a place of our own that also had a kitchen to prep our contributions to the big meal. This mountain house was perfect! It was comfortable and the nice size galley kitchen was great for two people to prep and cook easily without infringing on the other’s territory. We really enjoyed the large living room with plenty of space to spread out. The most wonderful part was the beautiful view out over the valley toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Snow came in on Thursday night and we spent a wonderful Friday enjoying the mountain views. Matt is a great host. We had a couple of questions during our stay and never waited more than about 15 minutes for his response. While there, a big snowstorm was forecast and we almost left early. But Matt’s quick response and info about when and how the roads to the cabin are plowed encouraged to stay and Friday was a beautiful, cozy day spent watching the snowfall and enjoying the day. We plan on being back soon.
This is simply a lovely home and location. The house is wonderful and the views spectacular. The area is rich with all sorts of interesting things and places, yet the house is isolated and quiet. The area is a dark-sky location and the patio is perfect for marveling at God's creative handiwork. I will be back--yesterday if I could.
Matt is a great host, very communicative and sent perfect directions on how to get to the house. The views from the house are the best! We watched the sunset every single evening. Great location - quiet and tucked away in a valley that is close to hiking, off roading, and Bishop Castle. The bed was super comfortable and we have already talked about coming back to work remotely. The hiking trail on property was great - easy to navigate and showed off the property well. We saw SO much wildlife and loved the hummingbirds and chipmunks especially. We bought extra birdseed to be able to keep feeding them! Our favorite part was the night sky - seeing the Milky Way, a lightening storm in the distance, and air glow phenomenon was incredible.
You will not find a better setting to spend your time in Colorado. This is without a doubt one of the hidden gems in the Westcliffe area. Beautiful home, spacious with all the accommodations anyone’s could want. The view is breathtaking and alone a reason to stay.
Absolutely beautiful
The view is spectacular and the rooms were very comfortable and well kept.
FANTASTIC!!! The view was picture perfect!! Incredible!! The house was perfect for our family! Plenty of room and so open so we could all visit while making meals. Beds were very very comfortable! Spring Break trip. My husband & I took our 21 yr. old son & my 86 yr. old mom with us. Rode the Royal Gorge Train in Canon City altogether. Next day we went hiking to the Marion Mines that my 21 year old son found by reading the “Southern Front Range Trail Guide” that was at the VRBO! My mother was able to stay behind at the house with a beautiful view to look at! Had a great time! Thanks so much!
The house was so comfortable and homey. We were very comfortable and there were many things to see in the area. It was very quiet and peaceful with beautiful views. Matt was very quick in answering our questions. We would definitely recommend Matt’s home to anyone looking for a peaceful place to stay.
Five stars is not enough for this property and host. Matt is an great host, communication was clear and thorough and he also gave us some tips on places to hike nearby. The house is clean and comfortable and filled with everything we needed to have a great week's vacation. And to top it off the view and surroundings are awesome. We will definitely be going back to the Mountain House.
Enjoyable place to go and relax
It was a beautiful home with an amazing scenic view. Our family from Texas and Kansas came together and enjoyed our stay in Colorado. If it was up to me, I would of just stayed at the home. Loved every minute of our stay and will be returning in the near future.
