The region

Monksilver is a quiet village on the eastern edge of Exmoor National Park, tucked between the Brendon Hills and the Quantock Hills in West Somerset.

Despite its name, the silver has nothing to do with precious metal -- it comes from the Latin 'silva', meaning woodland, so the village is really 'Monk's Wood'.

The village has its own welcoming pub, The Notley Arms Inn, which serves award-winning food and local ales. The neighbouring village of Stogumber is two miles away and has a community-run shop and Post Office, while the town of Williton is three miles away with two small supermarkets, a petrol station, cash machines, restaurants, a butcher, pharmacy, and hardware store.

Minehead is approximately ten miles away and has larger supermarkets including Tesco and Morrisons, high street banks, and a broader range of shops. Taunton, the county town of Somerset, is roughly 14 miles south and offers a full range of supermarkets and amenities. Both Tesco and Sainsbury's deliver grocery shopping to this area.

Monksilver sits within Exmoor's International Dark Sky Reserve -- the first in Europe -- making it an outstanding location for stargazing on clear nights. The Brendon Hills, Quantock Hills, and the Somerset coast are all within easy reach by car.

We had a lovely time staying at Jacob's Pond. Check in was really easy and Eric and Fiona had kindly left us some tasty treats to have when we arrived. The house was warm and comfortable. We all slept well. The kitchen has everything you need. The gardens were beautifully kept. We walked in the wood at the back and saw the chickens. We watched beautiful sunsets over the hills and the sea from the back windows. It was wonderfully tranquil. We loved walking in Exmoor and the Quantocks. We visited Dunster Castle and Coleridge's house as well. We had a thoroughly nice time and would recommend staying here.

We spent a wonderful holiday week in this lovely cottage. On arrival everything was very well prepared and all very clean. The view from the kitchen into the garden is amazing. This cottage gives you all you need to relax. Very silent. It‘s very good host for discovering Exmoor NP and the Quantock Hills. Thank you so much Fiona and Eric for this pleasant stay.

We were looking for somewhere really quiet to spend time after Christmas and this really fitted the bill. Weather was terrible so we didn't make the most of the close proximity of Exmoor and the Quantocks, but the cottage is cosy and very well equipped, so we had a great rest in a lovely setting. We are a 3 generation family and this worked well for everyone. Plenty of communal space to spread out into, good central heating and a beautifully kept garden. Downstairs bedroom and bathroom perfect for our 89 year old Father. Eric and Fiona the hosts are incredibly accommodating and thoughtful and we definitely recommend this place. It's a bit of a way along single-track lanes from the closest shops, but we came prepared for that. Lovely to visit Watchet and Dunster Castle. We would like to come back and explore the countryside in better weather!

My Wife, children and I loved the stay at Jacobs Pond. The location is wonderful and we loved waking up in the morning and looking out on the fantastic views across the fields. The house itself is very well equipped and spotless, loved the fresh eggs and other treats left behind for us, very thoughtful thank you, Eric. We will look to stay again in the future.

This place is fantastic, peaceful and tranquil. The garden is a beautiful environment to sit back and relax in. The welcome from the owners is superb, leaving a bottle of wine, treats and freshly laid eggs on our arrival. The accommodation is clean and met all our needs. I would recommend this Home to everyone. Perfectly placed for Exmoor, Lynton and Lynmouth and surrounding areas. If guests have children, and the weather is good I recommend a trip to Tarr Steps where the children can paddle and the grown ups just relax. Excellent holiday.

The cottage is perfect for a quiet getaway set in idyllic countryside. The cottage boasts more than enough living space for 6 adults to enjoy time together and apart. Beautiful garden and just a lovely space to spend time in. Hosts were friendly but not intrusive - the perfect combination. Would visit again.
