Built on a knoll that inspired its design sits a house of stone overlooking Lake Michigan, its architect Earl Young called it home for over 30 years. Earl Young designed and built this mushroom house for his own family and he chose the best spot in Charlevoix to do so! On the peak of town across from Lake Michigan, you feel like you’re at a private retreat on your back deck up two stories high. You can see the sky changing colors from the front windows and hear the lake rolling too. This home is a perfectly situated work of art, a living museum. Single floor layout with two fireplaces and 3 full baths, Earl Young’s glass dining room table, original layout and tile work. A perfect escape! A home unlike any other, magical and inspiring, one of the greatest houses in Michigan if not the country.

Across the street from Lake Michigan Beach with the famous red lighthouse where you can walk everywhere!!! Boutiques, restaurants and bars are all only a couple blocks walk. Parks are close by at the beach and library. Completely ideal setting.

We offer our guests all that you need during your stay to make it as relaxing and worry-free as possible. Fully equipped kitchen, new linens, beach towels, towels, paper towel, toilet paper, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, Samsung Frame smart television connects you to your Netflix account, Spectrum cable television, Sonos, WiFi, a huge fireplace framed in gorgeous stone makes it feel like a fairy tale. You won’t want to leave the peaceful scene of Lake Michigan right out the large front window!

The house is so interesting - it’s a U shape. The twin bedroom is at one end of the U and the other two bedrooms at the opposite end of the house. In fact, to get to the king bedroom one must walk through the side of the queen bedroom which also serves as a hallway. There is a bathroom in between the king and queen rooms. Accordion style doors are throughout the house as Earl designed houses to make absolute best use of the space. All of this adds to the fun of staying at a mushroom house!

Since the Mushroom Houses are famous tourist sites, you will have people outside in the road taking pictures of the house. We like the excitement of being a part of Charlevoix history!!

A review left from a guest in March perfectly sums up our home:

This place is simply UNREAL. I'm extremely OCD/germaphobic, so my definition of clean is a bit unrealistic. But this place was truly SPOTLESS, and absolutely perfect in every detail. The home is stunning, and truly extraordinary...a genuine living piece of art and history. Every inch of the home is pristine, and very well set-up for an easy and relaxed experience.
Everything is so thoughtful, the Nespresso, fully stocked with every flavor imaginable and sugar/sweetener, pretty much everything at your fingertips.
The king bed is CRAZY comfy, as are the pillows and blankets. Sparkling clean, but lush and soft and just delightful. Really nice towels, sheets...every amenity is high end. The decor is gorgeous - streamlined but rich and elegant and just lovely.
The location is unreal. You are truly within a few feet of the water, but protected by a wooded area, so the walk to the beach is minutes. It is quiet and insulated, for a genuinely peaceful experience. You can walk down Park Avenue to several lovely restaurants for carry- out or dine-in, steps from the most charming little downtown area, but distant enough that it's downright bucolic.
The highlights of the home are the beautiful fireplace and the outdoor deck area. The fireplace puts off so much warmth, the room is enormous, but so well laid out, it manages to be open and expansive but also cozy. On our one rainy day we just had a movie marathon in that lovely, restful, snug room...precious family time. The back porch is just charming, with a very unique design, cozy and private but picturesque...simply gorgeous.
The value is extraordinary, this home is spacious and comfortable and just so special. It feels like the quality of the original 50s materials, but somehow with no wear and tear. It's quality + clean + artistry = magic.

The house was exceptional. The location was perfect & overlooked Lake Michigan. The town was very close by and charming. The host paid special attention to details in the house & was equipped with everything we needed. All we had to do was bring our clothes. We will definitely be back.

Very unique house. Might not be suitable for tall people as the ceilings in some rooms are low. The kitchen is small but very serviceable. Living room is beautiful and the tv and internet worked great. The best part of the house is the deck which soars nearly three stories above the street below. We spent a great deal of time on the deck for meals and lounging. Convenient walking distance to town.

Should be coffee creamer and decaf coffee in the kitchen. #2 bathroom sink is 90 percent blocked, and faucet is dripping. Lock box is hard to open. Manny good features.

The house certainly had some unique architectural features. For the 3 couples, the layout was okay but not great. To access one bedroom, we had to go through another bedroom. The kitchen was a true galley kitchen and was somewhat claustrophobic. But we enjoyed our visit which was mostly positive.

The history, the comfort, the cleanliness, the location, the decor…all were perfect. This is a very charming place to stay. You feel the history but with all the modern conveniences. We particularly liked the magnificent living room fireplace and the outdoor patio area. Communication with the host and information provided were all wonderful. We enjoyed exploring the town and loved Terry’s for dinner and Smoke on the Water for breakfast. We were disappointed in the Weathervane Restaurant but loved seeing Earl’s fireplace. We would definitely love to come back.

We enjoyed our stay and the uniqueness of the mushroom house. Beautiful lake view! Quiet lovely street. Many “ mushroom tour” buses went by daily and were interested in our house…kind of fun at first but became a little annoying. We felt we couldn’t go outside without someone looking at us. Also only the master bedroom was air conditioned. We had two couples so one stayed in master and the other in the bedroom on the other end of the house. It wasn’t air conditioned…our week of stay the temperatures were in the upper 80s. They had many fans running when we got there but unfortunately we never could really get the house temp on one side below 78. Very warm and humid inside. Overall we enjoyed our stay in the mushroom house…couldn’t beat the lovely historic street and beautiful view of Lake Michigan.

This was a great place for us. The mid-Century modern appointments are beautiful and the location is excellent -- close to town and steps away from the Lake Michigan beach and pier. But the bedroom configuration is extremely odd and won't work for many groups. We had two couples and one stayed in the bedroom with the twin beds to achieve privacy. Please read the property description carefully before you book.

The historic, unique house is a treat. Yes, it has its quirks (low ceilings, some small rooms) but the living room and patio are great gathering places, and the location is unbeatable.
