Bass Harbor, Maine
This is a Saturday-to-Saturday vacation rental for two adults only.
The spacious deck of the Downstairs apartment is only a few feet from the water's edge at high tide. The front door, approached from the parking area and gardens, has a small deck with two steps; the sliding glass door on the harbor-side deck is accessed by a ramp and handrail.
The sliding glass door opens into the living room area. The living room has a beautiful sliding glass door view of the harbor, and the windows add the head-of-the-harbor view of the mountains. There are two comfortable arm chairs and coffee table, gas fireplace, books, and cable TV in the living room, with the kitchen and dining area just beyond.
The small kitchen has a four-burner electric stove, microwave, fridge, and a good variety of pots, pans, dishes, and utensils; cleaning supplies under the sink. There is a small dining table for two in the kitchen area, and the deck has a round picnic table and four comfy chairs if you care to eat outdoors.
The harbor side bedroom has a queen-size bed, and a second bedroom has twin beds. Both bedrooms have a closet and dresser.
Being a cozy apartment, it is perfect for a couple.
There is a full bath just a few steps away: all tile; tub and shower. Plenty of fresh bath linens. Supplies you might need are under the vanity.
The deck wraps around the side and front of the house and is shaded part of the day by the Upstairs deck. There are the outdoor table and four chairs, and a grill. It’s a wonderful place for watching the gulls and eagles and other shore birds, the boats coming and going, the fishermen with their lobster boats, and the sunset over Bernard, across the harbor: great opportunities for making some memorable photos.
There is central heat; fans for ventilation if needed; all linens (bed, bath, and kitchen) are provided. Immaculately clean. Lovely decor.
No smoking, no pets, not appropriate for children.

Glad to be on 'the quiet side': Views are beautiful. Bass Harbor has been photographed for the cover of a National Geographic book about New England and has been the site of several movies. The lobster fishing boats are always interesting, and if you love wildlife, eagles soar over the harbor daily. We counted twelve herons in the low tide one September day and have watched loons, ducks, terns, and gulls work the harbor.
Although we're only thirty minutes from Bar Harbor, we are essentially very different. Bass Harbor is a small fishing village and working harbor on the southern end of Mount Desert Island. We're called 'The quiet side of the Island.' There's plenty to do here: The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, Wonderland and Ship Harbor (part of Acadia National Park) are only a mile or two away. At Little Island Marine, the small boatyard which shares the peninsula with the house, Island Cruises makes nature trips Monday through Saturday, and charters private fishing or sailing trips. Restaurants are within easy walking
distance.

Amazing location on an island/peninsula jutting well out into Bass Harbor. The tides are wonderful to watch - at high tide right up to the deck, at low tide you can walk out nearly a hundred feet. It was so nice, we found ourselves just sitting on the deck taking it all in, at times foregoing all of the recreational opportunities of Acadia National Park. The house itself is cozy, clean, well maintained. So good we know we'll back again.
Total enjoyment of this exceptionally clean property. The back deck provides a peaceful waterfront view of the harbor with hours of viewing the birds, boats and tides. Everything we needed was included in each room for a comfortable stay. The decor provided a comfy atmosphere with a New England feel. We enjoyed the beautiful artwork. The bed was so comfortable. Great nights sleep in silence until the sounds of the lobster boats heading out in the early morning hours, which we also enjoyed. Will look forward to returning.
thanks
We had a wonderful stay. After adventuring during the day we couldn’t wait to come home and watch the sunsets from the deck. The house was cozy and we had everything we needed. Even the bed was comfortable allowing my tired body a good night’s rest. Staying there was so relaxing. 10/10.
Great stay.
This was the best place we have ever rented. We absolutely loved how close the house was to the water. Very relaxing to sit on the deck or on chairs in living room viewing the water and lobster boats. The place was extra tidy and well equipped with everything we needed.
This was our second stay in The Little Island House. I plan on returning. There's nothing more relaxing than having morning coffee on the deck overlooking the harbor. Watching the lobster boats and sea birds. The rental is comfortable and extremely clean. I adored the crisp white sheets on the bed.
Very quaint! Beautiful sunsets! Very clean and great location!
Great house. Immaculate! The kitchen had any tool I needed. Really comfortable beds! Million dollar views. Hiking trails nearby including some within walking distance. It really felt like home to me. 3 minute walk to a restaurant with tasty seafood, good beers and a fabulous staff! Most restful vacation in a very long time.
Charming waterfront cottage with nice amenities. Clean & comfortable. Lovely views. Close to Acadia and a quiet location
Wonderful location, excellent accomodations and extremely peaceful. This place is a slice of paradise. We enjoyed watching the boats and tides come in and out. Acaida is short drive away and staying on the quiet side was perfect. Thank you.
We had a wonderful time staying at this house on Bass Harbor. The house was spotless and had everything we needed. We could have sat on the front porch all week to watch the activities in the harbor. We were two couples that travel together often and the size of the house was perfect. I would highly recommend staying here.
Location, location! We loved being on the quiet side of the island watching the working harbor from the deck of this exceptional property! Small, but functional apartment with every need accommodated. Remote, but still close to hiking, sight seeing and restaurants. It was a perfect vacation week!
beautiful
This is a great little place! Everything was as we expected and We had everything we needed. The sunset view was amazing. My only suggestion would be to add a hammock to the porch (lol I improvised and napped on the chair cushions). If you wand touristy bar harbor- this is not it. We loved being away from the hustle and bustle and didn't mind a short drive to explore or grab dinner.
We thoroughly enjoyed our second stay in Bass Harbor at the Little Island cottage. Thanks again!
All in all. It is a great place to stay. It was quiet and peaceful. The view from the deck was excellent. The location is close to most everything you want to see.
