Portland, Oregon
Your safety is our top priority. We are following VRBO's advanced cleaning guidelines. Our neighborhood is among the safest and most peaceful in Portland.
The Magic Barn is in the heart of Hawthorne, a charming restaurant and boutique shopping district, accessible by walking 3 blocks to SE Hawthorne and SE Division Streets, past beautiful vintage Portland homes and gardens.
The Magic Barn is also centrally located 15 minutes to the airport, 10 minutes to the convention center, and 10 minutes to downtown Portland. There are four bus stops and rental bikes within three blocks, and ample free street parking on our block.
We require our guests to write us a message with a little information about themselves and their trip. We hope that this will help provide a safer environment for guests, neighbors, and hosts. Please share a little information about yourself and your trip when you book; we will send you the door code after we receive this information.
You have your own entrance through the "Star Gate", to the backyard of the main house. The Magic Barn is its own separate unit with small kitchen and bath with a claw foot bathtub. We list the claw foot tub on VRBO as a "Spa Whirlpool" (which is the only check box option to describe it) so that hot bath people can find their way to a hot bath at the Magic Barn. Enjoy!
The Magic Barn was built in1936 and was Todji's sculpture studio for fifteen years, until he transformed it with old growth barn wood, 3 large skylights, small kitchen, claw foot tub, vintage furnishings, and a sculpture garden full of Todji's sculptures.
Built with Love!

From 2000 to 2015 the Magic Barn was Todji's sculpture studio. Most of the sculptures in the sculpture garden were designed right here and are exhibited for our guests to enjoy!
The sculpture garden is shared space with other guests staying at The Magic House, your hosts, gardeners, maintenance people, etc. Please exchange friendly hellos, make friends, respect privacy, and practice social distancing when appropriate.
We are available to assist you during your stay in person, text, phone or VRBO messaging. Your co-host Hobie lives onsite and is available for friendly help and also to respect privacy. Todji lives nearby.
We all work full time and are active so we leave casual interaction up to the ease and flow of everyone's schedules. We tend to meet our guests more often in the summer, and less often when it is cold or raining.
We are very centrally located, and along with that convenience comes street traffic that is visible when entering and exiting. The main house is called "The Magic House", and it is on a fairly busy four lane street. The Magic Barn is set far back from the street and past guests have written in their reviews that the Magic Barn is "tranquil", "quiet" and "serene".
The bathroom doors have some decorative glass and open windows to the main space high above. If you are visually or audibly very modest please take a look at the photos of the bathroom doors and upper windows before booking.
We operate with a short term rental permit with the city of Portland.
Hobie is your onsite host, and he is a novelist and professional writer. Please text him if you need anything during your stay. We we give work at the Magic House to community artists.
Todji produces public art bronze sculpture monuments for US cities which you may already have seen, or that you hopefully will see one day. The sculpture collection rotates to different galleries and exhibitions, so some sculptures may not be there, and others may be in their place.
We hope to host you at the Magic Barn!
Love and health,
Todji & Hobie
Great location, walkable to wonderful parks and Hawthorne Blvd. Delightful character, fun vibe.
Walked about and explored the area. Lots of unique shops. Ate at TOMO Raman and Fried Egg I’m in Love, both excellent.
This is the perfect place to stay if you’re going to a concert at the Hawthorne Theater. The Magic Barn is just that, magical. We enjoyed it thoroughly.?
Easy to access, great location. Love the fireplace heater. Cool tiny home experience over the downtown hotel we usually stay at. If you read all of the info in the packet they send, it makes your stay very easy & understandable - so be sure to do that. The only thing is the bed - I'll second the other reviews here to say it is squeaky and only broken in on one side, so being the second person sleeping closest to the wall, I was sleeping on a slant lol. Definitely recommend a mattress topper or full replacement, but other than that it's charming and is within walking distance to a great area. Thanks!
Such a cute property! We loved our stay in the Magic Barn. So cozy and warm feeling. The sound of the rain on the roof and skylights was heavenly. Uniquely decorated and loved all the plant vines cascading around the ceiling. Would definitely recommend this space to others!
The Magic Cabin was delightful and unique. I enjoyed the little details and whimsical vibe of this little oasis. Thank you!
Very sweet, otherworldly studio in the backyard of an older home. There is a very quiet, eccentric aesthetic in the place that was warm and welcoming. We'd be happy to spend more time there.
We had an awesome time exploring Portland and using the magic barn as our home base. It was quiet, clean, comfortable and has an endless amount of charm. We enjoyed our morning coffees outside each morning before walking to Hawthorne to take in all the experiences Portland has to offer. Can’t wait to come back!
It was a cute little place. Bed was really squeaky. So getting up to use the bathroom was a bit of a mission trying not to wake up my niece haha. Pillows were not the best but fold them in half or bring your own. Location was great we would walk down to Hawthorne to walk around, shop and definitely eat drink and walk back. 420 friendly so that was awesome..seen a raccon crawl across the fence up a tree and on to the roof haha definitely loved it and will definitely be back
We had a magical time at the barn! It was in a super convenient location to access all the good sites and more importantly food of Portland. The rental itself is exactly as advertised and extremely cozy. Would definitely recommend for an intimate setting!
We enjoyed our stay at the Magic Barn. A few things: a small microwave would be handy for warming cold coffee, leftovers from dining out, etc. The one sided bed was hard to get in/out at night. We did feel safe and warm. No TV was kinda nice, but we did stream a couple of times on our iPad.
This little rental is located very centrally. Lovely bed! All the instructions were perfect. I’ll select it again next time in Portland.
Owners are very friendly, and the space is extremely peaceful. I found the aesthetic to be very inspiring artistically. If you consider yourself an art fartcy person, I highly recommend the space. It’s beautiful and friendly!
Can’t really imagine a better place to spend a weekend. The inside of the barn is beautifully designed and upkept, and the location is walking distance from Hawthorne. Thanks for letting us stay at the Magic Barn!
Like your own tiny ski chalet in the middle of hipster Portland. :-) Charming, cosy, and warm for my November visit. Easy walking to shops and restaurants. Would definitely visit again!
Great location and super cute place, loved the claw foot tub! Only thing that I would suggest to the owner is new pillows
This was our first time in Portland. Such a great neighborhood to stay and privacy in the little cottage. There’s ample parking on the side street so half a block walk. We were able to walk to good restaurants and accessible to bus lines wherever we wanted to go. Great neighborhood to walk around and see all the gardens blooming and old homes. The cottage is very artsy. A little strong with earthy smell (patchouli?) but a unique place to stay. Loved the sculptures in the yard too.
Not a nice neighborhood, really busy (24hr) street, just happy the car wasn't stolen overnight. Dingy unkept courtyard. Left after one night and slept on a couch instead.
