Your safety is our top priority. Our neighborhood is among the safest and most peaceful in Portland.

The Magic Barn is in the heart of Hawthorne, a charming restaurant and boutique district; walk 2 blocks to SE Hawthorne and 3 blocks to SE Division through beautiful vintage Portland homes and gardens.

The Magic Barn is centrally located 15 minutes to the airport, 10 minutes to the Moda Center, 10 minutes to downtown Portland, 2 blocks from the Hawthorne Theater, and under 7 minutes to any concert venue in SE Portland. There are four bus stops and rental bikes within three blocks, and ample free street parking on our block.

We require our guests to write us a message with a little information about themselves and their trip. We hope that this will help provide a safer environment for guests, neighbors, and hosts. Please share a little information about yourself and your trip when you book; we will send you the door code after we receive this information.

You have your own entrance through the backyard of the main house. The Magic Barn is its own separate unit with small kitchen and bath with a 5' claw foot bathtub for 1 person. We list the claw foot tub on VRBO as a Spa Whirlpool (which is the only check box option to describe it) so that hot bath people can find their way to a vintage hot bath at the Magic Barn. Enjoy!

The Magic Barn was built in 1936 and was Todji's sculpture studio for fifteen years. He transformed it with old growth barn wood, 3 large skylights, a small kitchen, claw foot tub, vintage furnishings, and a sculpture garden full of Todji's sculptures.
Built with love, enjoy!

When you request the above services we will send you and invoice through VRBO and make the arrangements after the invoice is paid.

The Magic Barn can be rented in conjunction with The Magic House (4 bedrooms with 3 full bathroom) to create lots of space for a large group of 8 or more people. Please message us regarding large group capacity.

The Magic House is booked separately; see Vrbo listing: 1354291

From 2000 to 2015 the Magic Barn was Todji's sculpture studio. Most of the sculptures in the sculpture garden were designed right here and are exhibited for our guests to enjoy!

The sculpture garden is shared space with other guests staying at The Magic House, your hosts, gardeners, maintenance people, etc. Please exchange friendly hellos, make friends, respect privacy, and practice social distancing when appropriate.

We are available to assist you during your stay in person, text, phone or VRBO messaging. Your co-host Hobie lives onsite and is available for friendly help and also to respect privacy. Todji lives nearby.

We all work full time and are active so we leave casual interaction up to the ease and flow of everyone's schedules. We tend to meet our guests more often in the summer, and less often when it is cold or raining.

We are very centrally located, and along with that convenience comes street traffic that is visible when entering and exiting. The main house is called The Magic House, and it is on a fairly busy four lane street. The Magic Barn is set far back from the street and past guests have written in their reviews that the Magic Barn is tranquil, quiet and serene. We built the walls and ceiling double thick, so it is sound insulated.

The bathroom doors have some decorative glass and open windows to the main space high above. If you are visually or audibly very modest please take a look at the photos of the bathroom doors and upper windows before booking.

We operate with a short term rental permit with the city of Portland.

Hobie is your onsite host, and he is a novelist and professional writer. Please text him if you need anything during your stay. We we give work at the Magic House to community artists.

Todji produces public art bronze sculpture monuments for US cities which you may already have seen, or that you hopefully will see one day. The sculpture collection rotates to different galleries and exhibitions, so some sculptures may not be there, and others may be in their place.

We hope to host you at the Magic Barn!
Love and health,
Todji, Hobie and Diana

A few minutes walk away from the Hawthorn Theatre where I attended a concert. Felt safe and was pretty quiet for all the traffic that comes by. Be prepared to lug your items in unless you paid for driveway parking. The space is small and cozy, perfect for one or two people. I wish there was a microwave, but that may just be my laziness talking because the toaster oven did well for most things. The only thing slightly confusing is the tub being listed as a hot tub. It explains it in the papers sent, but it's still kinda confusing when you go to look at your reservation on Vrbo and see hot tub and think oh, I didn't remember that! How exciting!, then get disappointed. Maybe it's my short memory span though.

Property was clean and cozy. It was great for my wife and I's first trip to Portland. The property is ideally located in the Hawthorne district with plenty of options for immediate access to food and shops. We loved the real life plants inside the cabin.

Walking into the Magic Barn the first time was, in fact, magical. You can really feel the creative energy and sense of fun the owners put into the design. It was great!

Beautiful property in a great location! The inside is whimsical and cozy, with beautiful houseplants plants everywhere!. My husband kept saying he could see himself living there. The sculptures outside gave an added flare of cool. If you like edgy art and cottagecore style, this is your spot.

While cozy and cute, it was dusty and musty, had many cob and spider webs, stained hand towels (found a dead insect inside washcloth) and an unclean bath mat. Surprisingly quiet with the busy street.

Very easy access to the Magic Barn. Was surprised to find that a “hot tub” meant a bathtub with running hot water. Lock on the sliding door stopped working when trying to lock from the outside. Cobwebs hanging off ceiling and plants everywhere! But otherwise cozy, close to grocery and thrift stores. On a VERY busy street but when I closed my eyes the noise sounded more like wind than traffic.

Everything was “magical” during my stay here. My only complaint was the water pressure was so low, and the shower liners kind of crowd you when you’re showering in the claw tub. Other than that, it was great and 10/10 would recommend and stay here again. The lighting at night with the chandeliers while reading was my favorite.

The property was great, secure and thoughtful with everything they provide, the tub was very nice and the pothos plants and monstera plant was so cool! Definitely would recommend this property to friends and family. Only thing that we didn’t like was the mattress was not comfortable and woken up very early by a very loud dog barking at a nearby neighbors house.

I was so excited to come to the barn. Not only was checking in confusing, the property manger took I think 3 days to get back to me. The water was cold- and very hard to get hot water. The bed was so uncomfortable and lumpy. The garden was dirty. They had a party staying in the main house. The coffee and fireplace was nice. The place could be chraming if they did a deep cleaning of it and actually care about it.

The place was great, except for too-too soft couch. . . the bath tub was lovely. My c/o is that the code to open the gate to the property was not posted anywhere in 'the welcome' packet. . ..I called the onset manager who was prompt, gave me the code, we both looked @ my emails = no code. He just kept saying 'this has never happened before' which I did not find helpful
