Also situated close by to the National Park Dwingelderveld (3,692 hectares / 9,120 acres) - the largest moorland on the European Continent - with its 60 km (37 miles) of walking trails & 40 km (25 miles) of bicycle paths. Diever is at the center of an abundance of historical sites and attractions for adults and children of all ages. Diversity on your doorstep!

- It is less than 15 minutes to the Blue Lake - where you can swim safely as the water is constantly tested (swimming towels provided!), or just laze on the beach!

- Get a glimpse of life in the Netherlands during the 18th century at the 'working'
village of Orvelte. Visit the WWII transit camp at Westerbork – to where Anne Frank and her family were brought. Take in the many museums that will provide an interest to each member of your group. For teenagers, there are 18 fun parks and, for our younger guests, enchanting ‘fairy tale’ parks nearby. While the city of Groningen ('shop till you drop') & the German border are all less than an hour's drive, the provincial capital at Assen is just a 25-minute drive away! Not forgetting a day-out to the world-famous Emmen zoo, while, for those looking for sports activities: sailing, boat excursions & fishing can be enjoyed at Giethoorn (the ‘Venice of the North’). Also, there is an 18-hole golf course available in Havelte (14 km / 9 miles away).

- Want to visit the beach as well The Frisian islands make a great day out, with some of the best beaches in the Netherlands:

Terschelling Island -
The ferry to Terschelling leaves from Harlingen, Friesland (1 hr 45 mins ferry crossing).

Ameland Island-
A ferry service runs from Holwerd, Friesland (45 minutes by catamaran or 120 mins by regular ferry). Excursions are available from Ameland to visit seal colonies on Robbeneiland.

Schiermonnikoog Island -
The ferry runs several times a day from Lauwersoog, Groningen (45 minutes crossing time).

The ports are around 1 1/2 hours from Diever.

The village of Diever -

Diever is located at the south-westerly tip of the province of Drenthe (approx. 2 hours east of Amsterdam), is renowned for the open-air productions of Shakespeare which have been re-enacted in its forest amphitheatre every summer since 1946. In the village, there is a grocery store, an award-winning bakery, a good variety of shops, cafés, bars, restaurants and a bank. There is a market, encircling the village’s 14th-century church, selling everything from clothes to local products – this is held in Diever every Monday throughout the Summer months.

There is also a Dutch National Tourist office in Diever with a wealth of information on the surrounding area.

So, whether it's picnicking in the forest, taking a dip in a forest bathing pool or going by horseback along one of the many marked trails, you won’t be disappointed by this area's rich heritage, its welcoming, English-speaking people and its unending choice of excursions and attractions. Come and visit the real Netherlands!

Accessibility:

- Diever is easily accessible from both Amsterdam Schiphol and Düsseldorf airports (both are 2 hours distance). A car is recommended (rental cars also available at both airports), although public transport (bus) just a few minutes’ walk away with links to the surrounding villages and towns. Nearest rail station is at Beilen (20 minutes away)

Using the farmhouse as a base to explore the Netherlands:

Are you looking for a central base from which to explore the Netherlands

- apart from being able to explore the north and east of the country with ease, ‘Under the Oaks’ is also very centrally located for visiting both the south/south-west of the Netherlands, as well as the west of the country. The travelling times for reaching these areas are considerably shorter than travelling via the highway network in the west of the country, as our roads and highways here in the north and east are less congested.

- Being situated in the south-west corner of Drenthe, Diever is placed at the crossroads of three Dutch provinces - Drenthe, Overijssel and Friesland - all uniquely different to one another. So when you are in Drenthe, why not discover Friesland and Overijssel Provinces as well - the borders lie just 15 minutes away by car, with the highway just 11 km (7 miles) away!

Driving times from Diever to other parts of the Netherlands

- it’s less than 2 hours from Diever to the southern city of Eindhoven (the Belgian border is just south of there).

A visit to Amsterdam while staying in Diever

- many of our guests drive the 45 minutes to the suburbs of Almere, and then take the short train journey from there into Amsterdam city. It’s much easier to park your car outside the city and use the fast and efficient public transport from there!

Wishing to explore Rotterdam and The Hague in the south-west of the country as well

- these cities are also just 90-120 minutes away. Again, travelling times from our region to these cities is faster than from many other parts of the country, as the highway network via Zwolle to Utrecht has lighter traffic.

We want you to have a wonderful and memorable vacation!

- It is our pleasure to be of assistance to you before and during your stay, and it is our priority to make sure that you will have a pleasant vacation.

- We are happy to offer any help in preparing your trip.

Please contact us with any questions you may have about the farmhouse, Diever, Drenthe or anything at all to do with the Netherlands!

The accommodations at Under the oaks were perfect for our family of 5. (though the house can fit a much larger group) David was most helpful in every way, from helping us with the bicycle rentals (he made sure we reserved them way in advance) to taking us on a small tour of the village and suggesting interesting places to visit in the area. David and his family live in half the house and the other half is the rental. We had a separate entrance, so it felt completely private. The village of Diever is great; the grocery store was a 45 second walk from the house, and lots of little stores and small restaurants within a 5 minute walk. We rented bicycles, which turned out to be the highlight of our trip! There are endless bicycle routes throughout the countryside, most of them are not next to the road like we are used to, but far away from the roads, cutting through the landscape of farmland. So very serene! Everywhere flat as a pancake, super easy bicycling. Diever is very close to several national parks and there are beautiful places all around. Do not hesitate renting from David and spending your vacation in Diever!

We were two families (with 5 kids under 8) staying together and there was plenty of space. This home is conveniently located a few doors down from the grocery store and just a short one to two block walk to an ice cream shop, bakery and bike rentals. Just past the ice cream shop is the entrance to the beautiful park. We rented bikes and David assisted us with this to ensure we were able to get the right bikes and without having to pay the cash deposit. Overall, we had a great stay and are so pleased we chose to stay here - we would stay again.

A lovely traditional home with lots of room for family groups. Set in a charming village with restaurants and bars within walking distance. Surounded by pleasent countryside walks and forrest cycle ways. Attentive and helpful owner on site to help make the most of your stay.

We also stayed in 2013, IIRC. The Sampsons are friendly and gracious hosts. The town is adorable, with a grocery 3 doors down and plenty of restaurants in walking distance and of course everything you could want in biking distance. The beds are comfortable, toys for the kids and David makes sure you are set up with bikes if you want that, and there's food in the fridge when you arrive. Always a pleasure to stay here!

Traveling from the U.S., our stay at Under the Oaks was a refreshing change of pace for a 3 day portion of our trip. The small town had everything we needed for a nice time away. We enjoyed the village shops and restaurants and just walking around. There was so much more to do in the area than we had time for. We used this convenient location as home base to travel around the area and north. Amsterdam was a reasonable distance and good roads. We were very pleased with the hospitality and kindness shown to us--from a personal tour of the house and village to a wonderful and generous welcome gift. Plenty of space and well maintained. Thank you very much!

I have been home 2 or 3 months and I am still reflecting on this holiday which was faciltated mostly by the wonderful location of this property. We both love countryside and village living and because of the fantastic location of this house we were able to literally have it all. Even the small amount of bad weather added a different aspect to the mood of the area. I have some great memories and photos of my time there. I have stayed in many places but the attention and knowledge from our host was exceptional in planning our stay. The welcome package was the best we've ever had if you like to feel safe whilst cycling then this village is perfect.

We had never been to this part of the Netherlands before and were very impressed at this hidden gem of an area and a property. 2 families stayed for 1 week. The house is in the centre of a lovely village surrounded by National parks and forests. The village has everything a holidaymaker needs (Supermarket, Bike Hire, cafes, restaurants, weekly market) and the accommodation is well equipped. The owner lives in the house behind and is on hand to assist with advice, suggestions of things to do and bookings. When we arrived there was a very good welcome pack left including wine, beer as well as coffee, tea, bread, butter and cheese. Parking is easy and off road. Being Holland it is very flat and great bike riding country and we were pleased to see that there were tarmac bike pathways through the forest making it safe for children to cycle away from cars. For day trips you are about an hour away from the coast or from the border with Germany. However, there is a wealth of information at 'Under the Oaks' with ideas of things to do more locally.

We have stayed at Under the Oaks quite a few times now. It is a place we like to call Our home away from home. We have been here with our children and grandchildren and we keep coming back! We couldn't ask for a nicer place to stay. Our accommodations are clean and spacious. David and Monique are excellent hosts and are willing to assist us with anything we need. Waiting for us upon our arrival is a welcome basket filled with food items. We love the small village atmosphere with its shops and restaurants. It is a very picturesque town! Here we can also enjoy kilometers of biking through the forest which lies adjacent to the village. We hope we can come back sometime in the near future.

We spent a great holiday in Diever. The farmhouse is very comfortable, fully equiped, very clean and the hosts extremly generous and helpful. Supermarket and bike rental are just around the corner . The village centre is a few minutes walking away and suprisingly good reastaurants can be found there + an awardwinning bakery. Walks or cycling in the national park can be highly recomended. Easy to reach even without a car. Good transport links to the train line and the regional center Groningen.
