This 1927 Southern Railroad Caboose X61 is located right in the heart of the Charming Historic Railroad town of Saluda, North Carolina overlooking the railroad tracks, once the steepest railroad grade in the United States until the trains stopped running through Saluda. One of 10 built in 1927 for Central of Georgia and approaching it's 100th Birthday it's been restored and now has all the modern amenities to make you feel right at home yet retaining it's historic charm. This Historic Caboose includes a full kitchen including all stainless-steel appliances, Refrigerator-Freezer, a full Oven featuring an AirFryer, Microwave, combo Coffee/Keurig maker as well as all the cooking and dishware utensils you'll need. Additionally is the Living Room with a very comfortable futon and sitting area with a 32 HDTV with Spectrum cable. Step up to the Cupola and enjoy looking out and imagine how the railmen saw it years ago to let the conductors know of impending perils.

In addition there's a large front covered deck with ample seating. We've also added a very spacious Saluda City View Rooftop Terrace where you can enjoy your favorite beverages with a wonderful view overlooking the City of Saluda and the railroad tracks that is the steepest grade on the Eastern Seaboard. There's also a gas firepit up top as well as a rolling Ice chest and Weber gas grille.
Just walk out your front door and step back in time in this historic town. Have breakfast or lunch at the Wakey Monkey or Wildflour Bakery , have dinner at one of the many restaurants in town or take a short ride to Tryon, Hendersonville or Asheville and many other charming towns. Choose from plenty of activities including kayaking down the Green River, Ziplining down the Gorge, hiking or cycling some of the most scenic roads you'll find anywhere.
If you are a cyclist just keep your bikes and cycling gear on the deck and head out to some of the best cycling in Western North Carolina. The Hotel Domestique 17 is located just 15 miles down the beautiful Greenville Watershed Road. Inspired by world famous cyclist George Hincapie this is a great place to ride to take a break and head back up the watershed to Saluda.

This property was fantastic . How could you not love staying in a 1800s caboose . The property was very clean and love location to town . We loved the upper level that overlooked the town with firepit and gas grill. We used the washer and dryer which were brand new. We did some hiking , exploring , wineries etc and still didn't a lot of time at this property . I would definitely recommend booking this property . We would definitely stay here again .

We spent four amazing nights at The Escspe! It’s such a cool place and perfect for my family, with a kitchen, full bathroom, and washer/dryer. We enjoyed evenings on the rooftop deck. Saluda is such a cute town. We are already planning to come back!

Perfect location!! Awesome place! Very neat and clean. I also loved how it was so easy to get to from the interstate. There were 2 play grounds within walking distance, a good selection of places to eat within walking distance, and places to get drinks. The owner was quick to respond and was very accommodating. We will definitely come back!

The caboose inside and upper deck were amazing. Clean, warm and welcoming. The ONLY thing we did not like was the front view. It is of numerous trash cans and vans. Not seen in photos of listing. For 300 a night, I expected better. Other than that, location is amazing, small town feel was incredible, lots more f food options and friendly folks. Also had a visitor beside caboose we named Saluda Steve. Below are pictures from brochure and actual view. Ken was made aware of concern and said he would look to improve. He is very attentive.

Great location overlooking Main Street on this beautiful small town. The Sky Deck above the master suite is awesome in the evenings to unwind with the fire pit going and watching the town below.. lots of great little restaurants and shops. Convenient access to the interstate and local highways to get out and enjoy more of the mountains. Pet friendly although we did not have a pet. Everything was clean and well-kept, well stocked .However be aware if you visit during late summer early fall you may experience a deck full of acorns as they fall regularly as well as leaves. The owner does have a leaf blower that can be used and is very efficient at removing everything. The grill and the cooler on the Sky Deck were great as well and worked well. The Caboose is in great shape and has an awesome little kitchen, elevated dining area surrounded by windows, and futon in the living space for extra sleeping room. Right in the town but very peaceful and mostly quiet.
