Casa Mateus is a delightful property right next to the Douro. We enjoyed lazing in the garden, enjoying the views and the two young children loved the pool. We were greeted with a delicious cake and basket full of fruit. Aregos station nearby makes travel very easy and it’s also easy to get the ferry across the river. We went to a wine tasting at Quinta do Covela nearby, which we thoroughly recommend.

We spent 9 fantastic days at Casa Mateus and didn’t want to leave! We were met by Bruno & Ricardo who showed us around the house and stunning gardens and provided lots of tips and useful information. They also left an excellent welcome pack with bread, cheese, ham, water, beer, wine & fruit plus an enormous homemade (by Ricardo) chocolate cake – what more could you ask for? The house itself is unique, very comfortable, exceptionally clean thanks to Lucia’s hard work and full of interesting family artefacts. Every window has a great view of the Douro and this is even better from the various areas of the garden. The splash pool was perfect for cooling off and would be ideal for young children. The location is perfect for touring the area either by car, train or boat. The train is great for a day trip into Porto and made easy by the fact you pay the fare onboard. We rented a car and found that using Google maps offline was far more accurate than the cars sat nav, particularly with the roads close to the house, many of which are unmarked. Communication with Rute prior to and during our stay was simply outstanding and as a family they could not have been more helpful including arranging flowers for my wife on our anniversary and organising our return PCR tests at nearby Resende. All in all Casa Mateus is an excellent property, spotlessly clean and managed by a welcoming and friendly family who went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our stay. It was one of the best villas we have rented, certainly the cleanest, and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

We enjoyed our stay at this wonderful property, right on the Douro River at the train station. The pictures accurately depict the property but it is so much nicer to be there to experience it in person. The location allowed our 3 couples travelling through Portugal from Canada to arrive by train and not drive. Daniela at the Tourism office was very helpful, arranging to order our taxi for a wine tour and ordered our meals from the Taverna. She also helped to confirm our train times for a river cruise from Régua to Pinhão. We enjoyed our best salmon meal ever from Taverna. We also hiked the well marked trail up to Tormes Restaurant for lunch which was very enjoyable. We highly recommend the property for anyone travelling in the area.

Perfect for families or anyone wanting a relaxing time. Lovely garden to eat, chill, read or sleep in! Kids loved the plunge pool and watching the trains and the water taxis. Air conditioned bedrooms wonderful! Hosts very thoughtful and generous.

Although property is somewhat “ hidden” from main roads for us that was even another plus on its location. Absolutely gorgeous garden with an amazing view of the Douro. The house inside was also great , the rooms quite comfortable although small and with limited storage. Also there was only one full bathroom.None of that mattered because we spent almost all of our time outside and the second half bath also helped a lot. We even spent time sitting on the dock right in front of the house with our feet in the Douro river with no one around as the access to the property and the dock is almost just limited to this property and another house. The owners ( a very nice young couple) couldn’t have been friendlier , being there to greet us, showing us the whole house and having a nice bottle of wine and everything for breakfast for the next morning. That was so thoughtful and appreciated. We were 2 couples and highly recommend this property. We loved it

We were a family group of 6 (parents and 4 young adults) very happy to spend as much time as possible at this lovely place. We loved every minute and so appreciated the house, the views of the river, and the inspiring garden - new layers discovered every time we stepped outside. We had a memorable final night's dinner on the outdoor table on the garden's first level, overlooking the river at sunset, enjoying every bite of the delicious, plentiful meals prepared by Dona Rosabela at the near-by tavern. We had a beautiful mostly-shady walk, the Camino do Prado, on a warm, sunny day. We wished we could've stayed longer to enjoy the many other walks, wine tours and other explorations. While we didn't meet the hosts in person, they provided very helpful, timely information, and we were well accommodated by the good ladies of the tourism office. We hope to be back!

Casa Mateus is quite simply an exquisite place to stay and unwind. We have rented many places but this has to be one of the nicest. The house is homely and traditional. It was immaculate and very comfortable. HOWEVER, we hardly stayed inside because of the garden, magnificent terraces and panoramic view of the Douro. Our reception went smoothly and we were given a tremendous and extremely generous welcome hamper. Rosa Bela is adorable - she and her parents run the taverna across the railtrack and her food is delicious and very good value. Many locals eat there. Highly recommended. We also had a memorable long lunch at Tasquinha do Fumo. The house literally backs onto the railtrack but don't let that put you off - a couple of short trains an hour stopping to take people into Porto. Thanks to Ricardo, Rute, Sara and Bruno for all their help and kindness - we will come back! Helen and Paul

Absolutely a five star rating. As I read in earlier reviews, this place is a treasure. I don't want to say too much because if everyone hears about how special this is, I may not be able to book it again. The perfect place to unwind- gorgeous gardens, spacious rooms, unbelievable location and the perfect host. Aregos is also a little gem away from it all on the Douro River and you don't need a car to enjoy it. Many thanks to Ricardo for all the added extras. I have to say we ignored his tips about places to see further up the river, we didn't want to go anywhere having found this perfect place.

This is one of the best places we have rented for a family holiday. Bruno and Rute are wonderful hosts: very welcoming and generous. The house is beautiful - even better than it looks in the already impressive pictures. The river location is picturesque and peaceful, the little pool is great for cooling off and the inside of the house is very comfortable. We did not have a car but were able to get about easily using the regular boat service over to the other side of the river, as well as the local trains. We thoroughly recommend Casa Mateus as the perfect holiday home.
