Auburn Hill MADISON cottage Circa 1802 offer a peaceful private setting on a historic horse farm once owned by Thomas Jefferson and part of the original Monticello estate, a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. with close proximity to wineries (10 minutes), town (12 minutes), Monticello (next door neighbor), Rivanna River(borders the property) Carter mountain (8 minutes), Clifton Inn ( 2 minutes) and many other activities. The cottage dates back to 1805, the property was once part of Monticelo and owned by Thomas Jefferson. It has been completely updated and modernized, combining the best of both worlds. There is a private lake (catch and release fishing), along with a 14 foot dingy for those qualified to operate it!

A Jimmy Buffet Key West 20 x 40 heated salt water pool complex with a PRIVATE HIIGH END JACUZZI FOR EACH COTTAGE a large grill with side burner, two large bars, pavilion, indoor/outdoor showers, bathroom/changing room, multiple outdoor games, two fire pit, two double hammocks and mountain/pasture views with complete privacy to enjoy the area. Most times it will be only you at the pool area. It is a working farm so there will be help around the farm to keep it well groomed for visitors.

Magical setting for watching wildlife like the bald eagles soaring down the river, multiple deer grazing in the fields, geese and ducks floating on the lake, or Great Blue Heron trying to catch lunch. Once on the farm you do not see any close neighbors (cottage is near main house, but situated to maximize privacy), unless you count looking up at the distant hillside to Monticello(see photo). The whistle or light rumbling of the distant train across the river can be heard on occasion. You can walk down to the rivers edge and sit on a large bolder watching the occasion kayakers floating down the river(or bring your own). James Monroe's home is only 10 minutes away, along with 14 wineries and 15 beer or cider breweries within 10 miles of the farm.

This is a hidden gem in a convenient location near a winery and historical attractions. Definitely for a nature lover! No frills or fuss-just a cool place with nice amenities. The Jefferson dwelling is not for tall people as the ceiling is low. The host is hospitable and the place is very clean.

What a lovely property. Quiet and rustic yet close to Monticello and Charlottesville. Easy to find. Everything was just as pictured and Steve and Casey were perfect hosts. The pool was refreshing after a hot day at Monticello and our own private hot tub overlooking the meadow was very relaxing. The suite was cool and VERY clean... a high priority for me. Thank you so much!

Amazing property! Super gorgeous and quiet. Bed comfortable but on the soft side. No bath, shower only, only hand soap at the sink. There are nice Jacuzzi's and a nice pool. Lot's of wildlife. The upstairs of the cottage has very low ceilings, I'm only 6' and had to duck when not dead center. The suite was infested with stink bugs. The mini-split AC units were covered with black mold inside and as a result the unit had a terrible stench. After noting this to the owner he sent someone to clean them and drop off an air purifier, after which the unit smelled strongly of bleach, but it eventually dissipated. The fire pit did not work the first night but the groundskeeper helped me find a shutoff valve (via text the next day). There were no directions to the river and no trails to be seen, which was a disappointment. I explored the property line but couldn't find an obvious way down to the water. The unit below us was open and did not smell of mold nor did it have any bugs, so it may just be the upstairs unit with those issues.

Very pleasant, peaceful and just what the doctor ordered. A quiet get-away that's far enough from civilization but close enough if you want to venture out in the world. The property was very well kept. The only things that need a little tending to is the pool area seating as the the bar seats should be replaced and the grill could use a cleaning. Our host and his sidekick (Steve & Casey) were a pleasure. I would definitely return to this property

Steve was an AMAZING host. He allowed us to add an extra day to our trip. The cottages were charming and well stocked with anything you'd need! It was just what we needed to recharge our batteries, as we are caregivers for my 89 yr old mother.

The property was beautiful and everything we could possibly have wanted was made available to us. The bed was comfortable, various different firmness of pillows was provided, sheets were soft and the towels were nice and fluffy. It does take the shower a significant amount of time to heat up so just be prepared for that. A footstool in the shower so that women can shave their legs would be nice as would a full length mirror. The angled ceilings do take a little bit of getting used to and you need to be careful when you walk, we recommend using your hand as a guide. The outdoor pool area is spectacular and the views are stunning. The biggest plus about staying in the Madison cottage is that the Madison Jacuzzi has the views.Host lives on site with his two very friendly dogs, is very amiable and will gladly tell you great places to eat and drink in the area.

This is truly an exceptional property near Monticello, Monroe's Highland, and Jefferson Vineyards. The Madison upstairs cottage was cozy and clean. It is small as advertised but has all the amenities you need! The outside pool, bathhouse, hot tubs, and cabana are very nice. However, we gave 4 stars because the outside pool area needs some upgrades just due to basic wear and tear (like all of the wicker bar stools being broken and the pool floats having mildew). Overall though we highly recommend!

Historic property just minutes from Monticello (sightseeing) and the Clifton Inn (dinner). While a bit small, it is a very cozy and appealing place. And very quiet. Having your own hot tub and hammock, and practically your own salt pool, is very special.

We look for unique properties to stay. I gave a 5 star review based upon the fact that this cottage was once owned by and once on Thomas Jefferson's land. Also because of the location on nice large farm property and the amenities. We did not use the pool or hot tub but they looked nice. The check-in did not go smoothly because we never received check-in info from VRBO. I had to send an email to the owner to get access but he responded back promptly. The rental is a 1 1/2 story brick building. The exterior is brick and is well maintained for its age. There is a lower rental called The Madison. We stayed in the upstairs rental called The Jefferson. It was made into a rental but should be clearly stated in the description about very restricted ceiling height. Perhaps the downstairs rental would have been better for us. It was difficult to walk through the unit because at 6' height I had to walk through the center to not hit my head on the sloped ceiling (although I did bump it many times during our 2 day stay - as did my 5' tall wife a couple times). About half way through the unit I had to duck my head to navigate around the bathroom which juts out into the main walkway. The bathroom is very small. The unit was well stocked with what most people would want. There is no cable TV so you we had to watch our local TV programing on my laptop through our Hulu subscription. Monticello and Monroe's home are both nearby and good places to visit. There are a lot of wineries close by.

We will definitely be back, and we loved the Alley Light suggestion from the owner which was incredible! All around it was a perfect stay, thank you!

Excellent location for our visit to Monticello and Charlottesville. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and the foothills scenery - plus wildlife - was beautiful. The weather was a bit cool for the hot tub but the farm and pastures were exactly the respite for which we were planning. Our host, Steve, called to check in and offer recommendations. Great visit to Monticello, Jefferson Vineyards, the Highlands, Boars Head and Charlottesville.

My husband and I came up for a few days to just get away and we didnt know what to expect. Steve surpassed all of our expectations and we left feeling refreshed from our trip and made a new friend along the way! The hospitality was excellent and we loved being greeted by the farm mascot, Casey! We will be back. The farm has the most beautiful views, the hot tubs are a wonderful added bonus as well as all the amenities provided. Thank you again Steve for being such a wonderful host!!

My lifelong friend and I came for a girls weekend in October and this property did not disappoint!! It is an absolutely beautiful place; peaceful and quiet. There were two other groups of guests staying in the other two rentals, but they were all awesome. My only regret is that we weren't able to stay longer. I would absolutely recommend this property to anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle and just unwind for a bit. The fall foliage was absolutely stunning, there were deer roaming everywhere, and the American flag was proudly displayed in multiple spots. We loved this place so much that we plan to return next year!! 10 out of 10, highly recommend!

This property has the potential to be absolutely beautiful. We stayed in the Madison which is the bungalow above the Jefferson. We knew the ceilings would be sloped but decided that since we're both average height it would probably be ok. I'm 5'7 my husband is 5'11, the ceilings were really too slanted for us, we kept bumping our heads all weekend. But as I said, we did know this and chose to stay anyway. The property itself was a little odd and we couldn't figure out what was going on there. There were a lot of dead plants in the landscaping and weeds growing up. The main house looks like it may not be currently occupied. Although the owner said he was just gone for the weekend, the porches had leaves and debris all over them making us think no one has been there in a while. There are a number of additional buildings which look to be used as storage. There were a number of cars on the property scattered about. This all gave it a very different feel from what was in the advertised photos. Additionally, when we got into bed the first night our sheets smelled very bad! They smelled like someone had forgotten them in the washer after the cleaning cycle was done. It was too late for us to call anyone for a new set so we just let them air out and removed the pillow that was the worst. This property is very close to historic homes, hiking and downtown Charlottesville which has some great restaurants. Overall we enjoyed our trip but probably wouldn't choose this property again.
