Discover Shenandoah Valley’s legendary "The Bougie Bunker." Built by a doomsday prepper, this bunker boasts some very distinct characteristics combined with breathtaking views. The home includes one-of-a-kind local art, homey furnishings and décor, and a well-equipped kitchen. The great room is complete with skylights for natural lighting. Just minutes from Luray and only two hours from DC. Plenty of room to stretch your legs and rest your mind on 45 mountain acres with spectacular mountain views, plenty of wildlife, and endless hiking and outdoor opportunities.
The adventure begins as you reach the bunker. Make sure to take in the breathtaking scenery of the Shenandoah Valley as you wind your way up the private drive to the complete seclusion and privacy of the Bougie Bunker. As you approach, you’ll be greeted by a full-length patio featuring Adirondack chairs and a romantic double egg chair swing. Your adventure has begun.
Living Spaces
We completely renovated this former prepper’s bunker to create an exceptional vacation experience. From the moment we drove on to this property, we knew it was something rare, special, and unique. We have reinvented a concrete mountain bunker into something warm and welcoming with carefully chosen furnishings and the artwork of local artisans. We hope it offers the same relaxation and peace for our guests as it has for us.
Enter the front door into a world of unique local art blended with comfortable furnishings. The living room is outfitted with a comfortable sofa and two side chairs. Enjoy a movie night from the selection of DVDs. Better yet, take advantage of the included board games and challenge your friends and family to a friendly competition.
Please note that due to the remoteness of this bunker, the cellular Wifi is very limited, slow, and intermittent. You may not have reliable internet/streaming, and there is no cable access. We are able to get Verizon cellular and data service on our phones, not sure about other carriers. In the mountains, nature, books, your friends, and your family are your entertainment!
Cooking & Dining
A well-equipped kitchen houses a gas stove and side-by-side refrigerator. With everything you need to create simple snacks to full meals, creating your favorites becomes an easy task. And with the kitchen a central part of the open concept living space, you’ll never be far from your friends or loved ones. A spacious island seats three.
A rustic barrel table with four coordinating stools sits in the dining nook. Note all dining chairs are stool-style with no backs and may not be ideal for small children.
Sleeping Accommodations and Bathrooms
The Bougie Bunker features two bedrooms and two full baths. The primary bedroom has a queen size bed and master bathroom with a tub/shower. The guest bedroom has a twin-over-double bunk bed, while the guest bath with a walk-in shower is in the hall off the great room. Each uniquely-shaped bedroom also has an uncovered window (no curtains) to bring in the most light.
Outdoor Amenities
The Shenandoah Valley and 45 private acres await you! Take a hike on the property, or just sit on the porch and admire the view. It’s all up to you. A picnic table allows for a cup of coffee or outdoor meal.

We wanted to stay somewhere in the Shenandoah forest for peak leaf season. We kinda waited until the last minute and found the Bougie Bunker by accident. I have a little bit of a prepper fantasy so the idea that someone built this thing for the apocalypse was appealing. The bunker was very secluded and super quiet. We didn't hear anything from inside. It was about 40 degrees in the morning and a little cooler overnight but the bunker was insulated just as you'd expect. The hosts left a little basket with smores stuff just as you walk in. Neat. TV had Netflix which we watched after playing some board games but tried to spend most of our time outside. We had trouble finding a trail on the property and were a little nervous about just walking through the woods. The only thing we'd have liked improved was a little guidance on how to walk on the 45 acres. Campfire was nice. Sitting on the adirondack chairs on the front porch drinking coffee and watching the trees light up was a highlight. Stargazing- saw more stars than anywhere we've been in the US. The coffee maker did Keurig pods and regular ground coffee. The hosts provided packets of Community Coffee which we drink at home. Thanks for a great bougie stay!
We enjoyed our stay, specifically walking the trail!
The property was everything and more than we expected. The property owners had thought of everything. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We will definitely be returning next year. If your looking for peace and quiet this is the place.
My husband & I stayed at the Bougie Bunker to celebrate our 30th anniversary. It was the perfect place for us. It was secluded and peaceful. The kitchen was well stocked and the bed comfortable. Highly recommend.
We stayed in the bougie bunker for 4 nights. The home has been beautifully updated, there was great attention to detail. Views were breathtaking. And the home is in close proximity to the areas attractions/ places to see etc. I will just add, that the cell service (for us) was very slow/ spotty, there was one good spot on the porch - otherwise we had to wait till we got to town to really connect/ call anyone.
The place was unique. The views were spectacular and it was so peaceful. My family enjoyed their stay and to say the least it was everything the owner said it would be. We would definitely come back.
The property is clean, quiet, and delightful. We stayed with our family and enjoyed being away from it all. The property is so well appointed. We enjoyed unplugging and spending some quality family time together. It’s a beautiful area! The bunker is so much fun! We enjoyed the extra touches, such as the s’mores kit! Great place to stay in the area.
This was a beautifully unique location that allowed for much needed peace and quiet.
This being our first escape to the Shenandoah Region we planned lots of outdoor adventures, from hiking the AT, river tubing, caverns, exploring quaint towns, and more. We were excited about the bunker, but nothing could have prepared us for the amazing experience. It’s nestled within the mountains and very secluded. We had a great time porch sittting and looking out on the mountains. The hosts do a wonderful job of making the bunker cozy and providing extras such as games, movies and s’mores for the fire pit. As much fun as we had exploring the region, we always looked forward to coming back to the bunker to relax. Thanks for a great stay!
Unfortunately due to a family emergency we were unable to stay, however the host was wonderful with communication and went above and beyond to help. Thank you and we will be coming soon for a stay!
We loved the unique house, and the proximity to Shenandoah National Park. We also enjoyed the fire pit, and the complementary S’mores kit. The house was extremely clean, and comfortable. I particularly liked the art work displayed. The kids loved playing horse shoes, and we all had a fun time playing Uno in the game area of the house. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience!
We all had an extremely relaxing time. Beautiful bunker with peaceful views. Definitely will be back!
We had a wonderful time at the bunker! The property is beautiful and most interesting place we stayed so far. Very clean and welcoming, more fun than we expected. The porch with a mountain view itself would be enough to call it a great place to relax and chill. Add to it a well prepared bone fire place for evenings, with sky full of stars above, and you may need nothing more. Perfect base to visit nearby National Park, Luray caverns and more. We loved it!
Beautiful and relaxing property. Definitely recommend.
