Treat yourself to a relaxing, rejuvenating, and inspiring retreat in your own private historic studio cottage in the heart of Stonecrop, the estate owned by Anita M. Smith — renowned writer, artist, historian, and “Herb Lady of the Catskills.”

Nestled at the gateway to Woodstock’s legendary Overlook Mountain, Rock City Writer’s Studio offers an authentic, nature-immersed Catskills experience best suited to guests who appreciate rustic charm, artistic character, and the outdoors. Walking distance (just over 1/2 mile) to the Woodstock Village Green, you’ll find galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and cafés nearby — or simply stay home and relax in your bucolic retreat surrounded by gardens, wildlife, and the natural beauty of the Catskills.

Prepare snacks and meals in your well-equipped kitchenette featuring a 2-burner electric range, full refrigerator, microwave, and other small appliances. Enjoy meals at the kitchen café table, on the screened bluestone porch, or outdoors at the bluestone garden table with gas grill surrounded by gardens.

Unwind in your private Nordic sauna for two, followed by a shower beneath the skylight in the cottage’s unique kitchen bath area.

STUDIO LIVING ROOM & COMFORT SLEEPER SOFA
The living room converts into a cozy bedroom at night and features a premium American Leather Comfort Sleeper that opens effortlessly into a luxurious queen bed with a solid platform design and high-density foam mattress dressed in luxury linens for a restful night’s sleep.

Often described as a “non-sofabed,” the Comfort Sleeper is exceptionally comfortable and easy to operate.

For guests who prefer an even softer sleep surface, a plush mattress topper is also available upon request.

The living room also features a 32” flat-screen HDTV with cable service and Blu-Ray player, as well as an extensive collection of books and DVDs. Additional amenities include spa towels and robes, Wi-Fi, and private parking.

NEW HEATING SYSTEM
We are also thrilled to announce that we have replaced and upgraded our winter heating system! In response to feedback we received from guests about a “ticking sound when the elements/coils in the old system were heating/expanding (an unfortunate characteristic of baseboard heat), we have installed a new hydronic system that is not only highly-efficient and environmentally-friendly, but also whisper-quiet. The new heater is very responsive and effective at quickly heating the studio and maintaining any temperature you choose, while not making a single sound. And for guests who have trouble sleeping in absolute silence, we have installed a white noise generator to provide background noise.

PETS
Well-behaved and crate-trained dogs are considered ~ please ask. Please note that dogs must be crated when left alone in the cottage, and leashed when outdoors. A $100/week pet fee per dog applies.

CANCELLATIONS
Cancellations that are made more than sixty days prior to the arrival date will receive a full refund. Cancellations that are made between thirty and sixty days in advance of the arrival date will receive a 50% refund. Cancellations that are made less than 30 days prior to check-in forfeit the full payment. Early departure does not warrant any refund of rent. Refunds will not be given due to weather or road conditions.

TRAVEL INSURANCE
If you think there's any chance that you may need to cancel your reservation, we strongly suggest that you consider purchasing travel insurance to protect your trip. Thank you!

Incredibly charming!!! A slice of wilderness heaven. I loved waking up with the light hitting all the surrounding trees. It was so quiet and serene. I took 2 saunas a day and it’s glorious showering under the skylight. The middle of town is a stones throw away and walkable however I wouldnt walk the road after dark as there is no sidewalk. My biggest complaint is the pull out couch. It was one of the worst I’ve ever had to sleep on. You definitely have to sleep with your head at the foot of the bed to make it tolerable. Aside from the bed I absolutely loved it and cannot wait to return!!!

This is a beautiful, treed, private property with wilderness all around. We had deer and fawns walking through the yard and the most spectacular firefly display at night. It is rural enough that you have complete darkness at night to enjoy the stars and close enough to town that we could walk everywhere we went. The cottage is small but contains everything we needed for a weekend getaway. We walked from the cottage to Overlook Mountain which was a significant outing (4 hours return including stops for snacks and water). The scenery is stunning and the lookout view was well worth the effort. We also spent a large amount of time in town shopping, eating (multiple meals at the wonderful Garden Cafe) and even took in a concert at the Colony. It is a wonderful little town full of welcoming and helpful people.

The Writer's Studio is very a comfortable and tucked away little cottage. I was pleased with all the, privacy while still being in easy proximity to the bustle of woodstock. It was clean and had everything I needed for my visit. At night remember to look at the stars.

The cottage is a very small- one room studio with an uncomfortable sofa bed . We could feel the frame of the bed while lying down. Once the bed was open there was hardly any space to walk around to get to the bathroom or kitchen area. The shower was a 2.5 ft square and off the kitchen The review didn’t make it obvious that there was only a sofabed and no dedicated bedroom Now when I read the description I see they never said there was a queen size bed or a double bed instead it’s cryptically described If we had realized that there was no separate bedroom and only a sofa bed to sleep on,we wouldn’t have chosen this property. But if the person reading this review is ok with this, then this is a perfect place for you It’s very small, charming, cozy and a great location

Wonderful place to stay for visiting the village. Both the manager and the owner are kind and accommodating and it was a pleasure to communicate with them. The outdoor space is lovely and peaceful. It was challenging for two people on the inside without a bedroom and with a tiny shower, but the bathroom is very comfortable and pleasant.

It was a cute space, the shower was a bit awkward if you're on the larger size/claustrophobic but otherwise was a pleasant stay.

Comfy and cozy place, we were so relaxed during our stay. Location was perfect for us. The only thing i would like more of is water pressure in shower! We hope to get back there next fall!

We had a lovely time enjoying the garden, Woodstock and its surroundings. It is the perfect spot for a quiet, relaxing time close to nature. Lovely friendly owner, quick to respond whenever we had a query and to fix the issue. We never wanted to move.

The studio is very adorable and quaint. The location is amazingly central to Woodstock without being too close. The property is beautiful and well maintained. I wanted to just lounge in the yard and bask in the beautiful natural setting.

This sweet spot is a great place to experience the beauty of the area, and the cozy cottage also makes for a nice romantic getaway. My husband and I used it as home base for exploring various towns in the Hudson Valley and its proximity to Woodstock-proper can't be beat. Also, the kitchen is well stocked with all kinds of cookware, and since we also attended a group potluck event, I was able to make a fab dish with what was available in the kitchen. Highly recommended.
