Welcome to Your Lakefront Retreat in Highlands!
Tucked away in the peaceful woods just 2 miles from downtown Highlands, our cozy lakefront bungalow offers the perfect balance of seclusion and convenience. Whether you're here for a relaxing escape or to explore the charm of the town, you’ll have the best of both worlds.

This space is built from our exposed basement and has been thoughtfully designed with comfort and style in mind. You’ll a welcoming atmosphere with windows in every room and all-new furnishings throughout. The bungalow features two queen bedrooms—one with a Sleep Number bed—a full kitchen, and a spacious full bathroom with a shower-tub combo deep enough for a relaxing soak. Step outside to enjoy the lake-view deck, or dine al fresco on the separate side deck with an outdoor table. Flat-screen TVs are available in both bedrooms and the living room, and there’s a stacked washer and dryer for your convenience.

The Space:
We transformed an unfinished basement into a warm and inviting bungalow filled with wood and stone accents that bring in a rustic cabin feel. While the main home dates back to the 1960s, we've embraced its charm—so don’t be surprised if you spot some original iron piping or other vintage touches throughout the space.

Guest Access:
Your private pull-off parking spot fits one car and leads to a set of gently sloped stairs to a landing, followed by a standard stairway down to your private entrance. (See pictures)

The Neighborhood:
Mirror Lake is a peaceful, no-gas-motor lake just a couple miles from downtown Highlands. It’s a quiet, friendly community where the only sounds you’ll likely hear are birdsong and the gentle waterfall over the nearby dam. It’s the ideal spot to slow down and reconnect with nature.

Getting Around:
A vehicle is recommended for getting around Highlands, as rideshare services are limited.

What We Provide:
We start your stay with hospitality-sized soaps and essentials, not full-size bottles, to give you a fresh welcome while keeping things eco-friendly. If you need more during your stay, downtown Highlands has several charming shops and stores to explore.

Dog-Friendly Policy:
We love dogs and welcome up to two well-behaved dogs under 60 lbs. A pet fee applies to help us maintain a fresh and clean space for all guests. For the comfort and safety of everyone, we ask that your furry friends be house-trained, vaccinated, and treated for fleas and ticks. Dogs are not permitted on beds or furniture and must be kept out of the lake. Please pick up after them and ensure they aren’t disruptive while you're home or away. We also ask that you do not throw your dog waste bags in the bottom of the outdoor trash bin. The town trash service only picks up closed trash bags in the trash bin. Please start a separate trash bag for this purpose and put it in after you have deposited your stay trash. Otherwise, it all gets stuck on the bottom and creates a mess. Have questions Just ask!

Important Notes:

Trash must be bagged and placed in the street-side bin. Trash pickup is Tuesday and Friday mornings. Please help ensure the bin faces the street—Highlands’ trash service collects bags manually. So if it is not bagged, it sits in the bin, making a mess. PLEASE PUT ALL TRASH IN A TRASH BAG.

Only provided toilet paper (Charmin) may be flushed. Absolutely no wipes, hair, food grease, or… G.I. Joe figurines (yep, that happened). You’ll be responsible for plumbing damage if this guideline isn’t followed.

Please clean the grill after each use, including the grease tray, so the next guests can enjoy it too.

Notify us right away if anything breaks or isn’t working—we’re happy to fix it, and you won’t be charged for honest communication.

Interaction With Guests & Owners:
Depending on the season, we may be around during your stay. We’re always happy to answer questions or offer local recommendations. If we're in town and you feel like joining us for dinner or a glass of wine with the locals (that’s us), you’re more than welcome to knock! If we’re away, our trusted neighbor will be available to assist you.

We’re excited to host you and hope your time in Highlands is filled with rest, beauty, and memorable moments. Thank you in advance for helping us care for this special place!

Clean, pet friendly, and close to downtown. Very quiet inside (road noise outside). Enjoyed walking around the neighborhood.

Very musty smelling on arrival. Several rug mats were dirty and old, plus one of the comforters was old and very used looking. We do realize pets were allowed, we did not bring ours. Perhaps, that is why these used items have not been replaced. Also there was no curtain or shade on the full glass doors. We also did not realize there was a downstairs to this cabin , and not just our floor of thecabin.

We stayed here with our two younger daughters for several nights in late July and really enjoyed it. You have two porches and access to a private dock where we enjoyed sitting in the evenings, which can really make the experience. As described, it is a basement apartment with a private entrance, and it is nicely finished. As others have noted it is small -- but if you're plan is to spend most of your time out elsewhere (as ours was), it is perfectly adequate, even with four travelers, and especially if you make use of the outdoor spaces. It rained a couple of the days while we were there, and on cloudy days it felt like it lacked natural light, but that shouldn't be surprising for a basement apartment, and we felt like was appropriately reflected in pricing compared to the rest of the area.Overall, we thought the apartment was a good value, especially since it is just minutes outside of town. the owners were communicative and easy to work with. We'd certainly consider staying again.

Basement needs pest control. Killed 6 large spiders, and two insanely huge grasshopper like bugs. We were also unable to get the basement cool enough to have a decent night's sleep. The electric outlet by the master bed does not work. The glass light cover above the bed fell on us while we slept, and the dead bugs that were trapped in it were then on the covers. We had to get up in the middle of the night to clean this, Lastly, there was no wine opener. We had to go back out to purchase one after getting our groceries.

My family of 3 had a wonderful time. The apartment was cute, well appointed and very clean. It is a basement apartment so it’s a little dark but we spent most of our time outside so that wasn’t really an issue for us. Mirror Lake was great for canoeing. The location, on a lake, near Highlands can’t be beat! The owners stayed in the house above us our entire week long stay. They were very quiet and extremely respectful of our space. Definitely would rent again!

Out stay was very nice. The place is well appointed and well situated for a quiet time, but not too far from town. Enjoyed watching the squirrels gather hickory nuts for winter.

Key code is very difficult. My husband could get it to work after 5 or 6 times. I never could get it to work. Description said bungalow which is a small home. Description wrong it is an apartment several floors under. Too many steps for carrying things down. Too dark. Maybe put in a window over the sofa. Kind of funny I had lights on everywhere because I like light. I put a navy blue top on instead of black. I put a sweater on and didn’t notice till we got away from the house. The parking is not adequate. We didn’t feel it was safe in the tiny spot. On the plus side everything was nice and new. The heating is inadequate. I finally put it up to 78 but we were still chilly. The tv worked great. We still enjoyed our stay.

Nice, clean and quiet. Many steps to navigate from the parking spot to the access door and many to the dock. Unusually high step to get into the bathtub/shower. It’s a very deep tub and the foundation is raised 2 or 3 inches. This may affect people older or those physical challenged. The automatic coded lock on the door is difficult to see the numbers until the first number is entered, then it will light up. Nice dock enabled me to launch my inflatable kayak and enjoy the lake. Also be aware of the challenging narrow roads which are common in this area. Also, only one parking spot for this lower apartment. Overall positive stay and the owner was available to answer questions.
