Carthage, Missouri
Stirling Cottage, a spacious 5-bedroom, 2 1/2 bathroom whimsically remodeled farmhouse sleeping up to 16 is situated on 60 beautiful, serene acres, about 8 miles south of Carthage (the website incorrectly says Sarcoxie,) providing the opportunity to explore nature, watch/play in the laughing creek, or sit on the deck & enjoy the sights & sounds of the country and slow down from the many demands of life. PLEASE NOTE: I cannot accommodate animals indoors because so many of my guests have allergies. The base price is for six guests. Extra guests (up to sixteen) are
$20/person/night.
Also on the property is the original (remodeled) Milk House which can sleep up to six people (4 on beds plus 2 airbeds or cots) and is booked separately.
The farm is a perfect location for small family reunions, personal or small group retreats and celebrations of all kinds.
"Twigs" is the large master bedroom, with king-size bed, chaise lounge, shabby chic decor, and views of our east fields.
"Vintage" offers one king bed and one double antique bed. Four large windows showcasing stunning sunsets, and the other antique furniture create a "vintage ambiance." (There is also a trundle bed under the double bed.)
The "Sunroom" is the smallest bedroom on the main floor, but lets in the grandest light w/two walls of windows. A comfortable daybed with trundle underneath allows two people to enjoy this sunny room.
"Maps" and "Blooms" are two dormitory -style bedrooms on the second floor with half-bath. "Maps," is decorated with artifacts and antiques and has three twin beds (one is X-long) ; while "Blooms" is decorated with bright colors, floral fabrics, and wicker. It has four twin beds.
PLEASE NOTE: I cannot accommodate any animals inside the house. Because we are a working farm, there will sometimes be farm activities going on while guests are here; and a few people, including my handyman & my part-time caretaker (who both live on the grounds), as well as my husband and I (who do not live on the grounds,) may come and go discreetly as we take care of the land and the animals. The nearest neighbor is a long stone's throw away, so the peace, quiet, and beauty of this farm will gently roll away the demand and stresses of life.
Add to that, beautiful St. Gertrudis cattle, the softly clucking hens, some affectionate, but strictly outdoor cats, a hammock under the trees - and you have the idyllic environment of Stirling Cottage.
I love to host family reunions, getaway and craft retreats, birthday parties, anniversaries, and events of all kinds! Please contact me for specific pricing.
(Ask about my discount for active clergy and active military personnel.)
Please note: Because of the popularity of Stirling, I have a strict cancellation policy:
---full refund for cancellations made within 48 hours of booking, or if the check-in date is at least 21 days away
---50% refund for cancellations made at least 7 days before
check-in.
---no refunds for cancellations made within 7 days of check-in." However, in some circumstances, I have been able to make exceptions when the space has time to be rented to others so it never hurts to ask.

Nice, relaxing, and spacious home for a large family or combination of families. Highly recommend.
Wonderful property and experience for the grooms family and wedding party!!! Thank you to Merre and John for a great weekend!!!
Very clean and comfortable. Easy to access. We enjoyed the animals and scenery.
Had a wonderful time! Loved everything about our stay! Clean, comfortable and cozy!
This place is a hidden gem! We felt safe, the place was clean and the hostess was most gracious. My grandkids loved the animals and the creek. It's close to several fun attractions, and is less than an hour from Springfield. It was a perfect place for our family!
The house was spacious and quirky. There were great outdoor spaces for the kids to run around and entertain themselves. For an extra $30 the host gave us a tour of the farm and let the kids interact with several animals.
The property is awesome. The owners greater us and checked in to make sure we had what we needed. We had homemade bread and fresh eggs at checked in and offers to assist with carrying things out as we left. Many of us have it on our list of possible places for personal needs as well as a revisit for 2014. Away from the congestion of the city but close to town and many wonderful day trips and eating experiences. 5 stars are not enough for what this has to offer.
A group of 13 ladies stayed here together and we absolutely loved it! The house was very clean and accommodating! Would stay here again.
We had 8 women in our group and their was not one complaint all weekend. Mere was a wonderful host. She met us at the house and took us on a tour which really made all of us feel very comfortable. The homemade bread Mere made was delicious and she also gave us a dozen eggs from the chickens that roamed the property. When Joplin hosts the tournament again, we will definitely be renting this house again. Thank you Mere for making our weekend extra special.
We had a nice relaxing family weekend here. Cannot wait to come back when the weather is a little nicer.
Great place with plenty of everything needed. Fun outdoor activities for the little ones. Merre is very helpful and happy and a great hostess. Thanks for a wonderful stay.
Homey, warm and a great place for people to gather! Farm animals and surroundings added to the experience. Host communicated well and worked with us as our plans evolved. We had a total of 13 people, with five different sets of travel plans, and Merre was flexible and accommodating as we worked out the details.
This place is not new but it’s a wonderful place to get away from the busyness of life if you’re looking for a vacation. Merre is a great host and took care of all our needs!
This was a cute farm house, very peaceful and relaxing. It was nice to walk into the house and smell fresh cooked bread. Also nice to have fresh eggs. The only things that did not make this a five star is the dryer broke which was inconvenient and the furniture was uncomfortable .
Farmhouse Everything was great
The property had all we needed, and we had a great time with family. I especially appreciated: the fresh well water; the books, games, and DVDs (we used all of those categories); the stocked tea and coffee; the appreciation for and use of vintage things (such as several original fixtures); plenty of linens, toilet paper, trash bags, etc.; the fire pit + corn hole game; local information in the foyer; seeing the farm animals across the street; the overall 'make yourself at home' vibe of the property. It is evident Merre has perfected the art! The notes and explanations of things around the house really make you feel accommodated.
The property felt very relaxing and inviting. My family and I made some great memories in this very unique home!
We had a great time at this historic house. The house was very clean and there was plenty of space for the 11 of us. We enjoyed the chickens and the cat as well! The vintage touches were excellent! Beautifully re-done into a welcoming environment for a group. Loved it!
Merre is a wonderful hostess as is her husband John. We rented the place for a week of family time with our daughter and 2 grandchildren. The kids, ages 9 and 7 loved the place. They were completely charmed by the Girls, chickens and the kitty cats. The animals were very socialized and tolerant of children and even allowed themselves to be picked up and handled by the kids. The swing, books and games allowed the children hours of unplugged entertainment. They also lived swimming in the creek, swimming hole until their lips turned blue, This farm was exactly what we all needed to reconnect after being apart for so long. Mrs. Merre and Farmer John are gracious hosts and really like to meet and get to know people. They are also very patient in answering the thousands of questions asked of them by our grandkids. The FARM is the perfect getaway. It allows everyone to slow down and unplug for a time. This is one vacation we will not soon forget. I hope these will be some very happy memories for the kids. Thank you again for charming us to pieces. I hope we will be able to visit again. Sincerely, Mary Hersch and family June 2022
We had a very good and relaxing Family reunion time. The owners are very friendly. The place is very natural. Close to nature. Good place for hiking, playing with the animals and having a pleasant time. Highly recommendable.
Stirling + The Thirties was the home for our adult mission group as we worked with Joplin Habitat for Humanity. The spring weather allowed us to sit on the deck each day when we returned from our day of work. The chickens greeted us and that was fun. We prepared most of our meals at the house - cooking and grilling. We played card games around the big dining room table. Everyone had a comfortable bed. We would enjoy staying on the farm, again, if Joplin Habitat has work for us.
