Carthage, Missouri
The Milk House . . unique in every way, and a place for the adventurer who loves a simple, peaceful lifestyle for a weekend, or for longer term lodging ( w/a significant discount.)
Originally part of a dairy operation, the Milk House still has the large steel doors that admitted cows for milking. I have chosen to keep it much as it was then, w/ the added conveniences of a small bathroom and fully equipped galley kitchen -(sink, refrig, microwave, hot plate, air fryer, crockpot, counter-top oven but no full-size oven.)
The main room has a daybed with trundle underneath, two comfy arm chairs and a dining table with 3 chairs for eating or working. Additionally, there is a comfortable daybed with trundle underneath sleeping two located in my office which adjoins the Milk House, separated by a small steel door and four large steel "cow" doors. There is also space there for two airbeds or cots - altogether allowing six guests to stay.
( I do not use my office when guests are there.)
Keep in mind - this is a tiny, rustic house with concrete floors - an adventure in bygone days when life was physically hard, but simple; and country life was desirable. A mighty wood stove and space heaters keep you cozy in cold weather with air conditioning in the summer. The Milk House is one of the outbuildings on a working 60 acre farm about 8 miles SE of Carthage.
PLEASE NOTE: I cannot accommodate any animals inside the house. Because we are a working farm, there will sometimes be farm activities going on while guests are here; and a few people, including my handyman & my part-time caretaker (trustworthy guys who both live on the grounds), as well as my husband and I (who do not live on the grounds,) may come and go discreetly as we take care of our land and animals. Our son also drives through as a security measure to lock the chicken door and check the creek at dark nearly every night.
The base price is for two people - each additional guest is $20/person/night.
The nearest neighbor is a long stone's throw away, so the peace, quiet, and beauty of this farm will gently roll away the demands and stresses of life. Sturdy St. Gertrudis cattle, the softly clucking hens, and some affectionate, but strictly outdoor cats, afford you the idyllic environment of the Milk House at Ozark Highlands, a truly special place!
To add to the beauty and peace of Stirling, I am now able to offer the skills of an experienced massage therapist, who brings her table and supplies to the property. One recent guest who has experienced professional massage therapy in her world-wide travels, said, "Elise gave me the best massage I have ever had!" (Advanced notice necessary-payment made directly to Elise.)
The trip was enjoyable. Property was quaint and peaceful. We used both the milk house and attached office and that provided good spaces for us four. The only complaint is the shower size is TINY but really I believe it's due to the age and structure of the building. We stayed two nights and enjoyed playing in the creek.
What a wonderful little place! My husband and I loved the uniqueness of the Milk House. It was cozy and comfy for us. Being able to have some great amenities verse a hotel room made the difference for us. Loved being able to check out the farm, play with the kitties outside and see all the chickens out free roaming later in the day. The owner was so gracious and helped us with locating some places we wanted to visit. We felt like part of the family when we talked with her. Almost hate to give an absolutely outstanding review as afraid it will always be booked when we want to visit again. Definitely would stay there again, and again, oh and again!
good place for relaxation
So very clean! The landscaping, lawn, properties are so well maintained that it made it a true pleasure to stay. Was so nice that I am planning to return in the future.
Very nice place Jack n Jill the two cats met us with Merre The owner who had a great smile
Nice & Quiet! Smell of homemade bread as soon as you walk in the place. Very nice owner liked her a lot! Watch the cats they will snag your bread! LOL!
This is a beautiful rustic country spot. It was exactly what I wanted, chickens in the yard, two playful kittens and lots of cows in the back pasture. The Milk House is rustic but spotless and the owner provided fresh eggs from her chickens and a warm loaf of bread on my arrival. It was exactly what I needed for a get-away and the owner is a lovely lady who made the entire experience delightful. I’ll definitely be back!
Great semi-primitive cabin. A welcome escape from the city. Excellent host who puts forth an extra effort to make the traveler feel welcome.
Merre was so friendly and hospitable. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with her on check in. The milk house was rustic and cozy and was like home away from home. We slept well. We enjoyed spending time with the kittens as well as spending some time relaxing on the hammock and catching lightening bugs. What a great experience.
Merre is so hospitable and a wonderful host. The little milk house is rustic and cozy. I loved my stay. I have also gotten to stay in the cottage last winter and next time I plan a visit to Carthage I will absolutely be checking to see if any of Merre's properties are available before looking for anything else.
