Carthage, Missouri
Our hand-built stone cottage is rustic, simple, straight-forward, and perfect for those seeking a stress-free short getaway from city living or for longer term lodging (that comes with a significant discount.)
PLEASE NOTE: I cannot accommodate any animals inside the house. Because we are a working farm, there will sometimes be farm activities going on while guests are here; and a few people, including my handyman & my part-time caretaker, as well as my husband and I may come and go discreetly as we take care of the land and the animals. The nearest neighbor is a long stone's throw away, so the peace, quiet, and beauty of this farm will gently roll away the demand and stresses of life.
With 4 beds and 1 bathroom, we can comfortably accommodate 4 people, however, for families or groups that don't mind close quarters, we have two cots, so we can adapt to six people in a pinch. (Keep in mind that this is a former hunting cabin - very comfortable, but not luxurious.) There is good wifi and a collection of family-friendly DVD's, games, and a smart TV.
A spacious kitchen allows you to create custom meals – be warned - it has a lower than normal ceiling (about 7'.) The loft is accessed by a steep, narrow, low-clearance stairway that can be difficult for small children, but there is a "kiddie gate" for use to prevent little ones from climbing unexpectedly. There are two steps up into both the bathroom and kitchen. The bathroom has a shower – no tub.
A most interesting, fun time to visit The Cottage is during our annual spring kidding season when the fields are literally "jumping" with baby goats. Normally kidding occurs during May and June.
Ask about our discount for active clergy & military personnel. We are located just off of I-44 south and east of Carthage – due east of Joplin, with easy access to area attractions (complete directions will be given after booking.
Very peaceful and lots of views of animals and beautiful farm land. The stars at night are terrific because no light pollution from the city. Lodging as advertised and expected. Hosts were gracious, courteous and very caring about giving a great stay experience. If you need to meditate this is the place.
Wonderful weekend stay for part of our wedding party!
I really enjoyed the tranquility and the farm animals. I needed to rejuvenate and this was the perfect place. The host was very nice and helpful. She even had some bread baking for me when i arrived. Would definitely stay here again!
Very nice rustic cottage in a nice location. I stayed nearly 2 weeks and found the owners to be very attentive and responsive —- very willing to help in any way they could. I enjoyed my stay and would definitely stay again.
Merre is a kind and generous host. The animals are lovely. The property is beautiful. We enjoyed our stay.
Beautiful little cabin on an active farm with a lot of fun animals to look at as you enjoy a spectacular sunset on the balcony. Merre made the check in as simple as possible and let me know about some of the creek access areas around the farm with handy maps to both. Close enough to multiple towns so picking up supplies was a breeze. I highly recommend this location or any of Merre's other properties in the area!
A nice place to stay and unwind . It was big enough for 2 adults and 3 teenagers. Merre was kind enough to set an extra cot up for us. She had fresh made bread awaiting us, upon our arrival. The girls enjoyed using the fire pit to make s’mores. We went to crystal clear creek & and enjoyed the the animals. Merre is a wonderful host. Our 2nd time staying at her properties. We hope to be back next year.
It was great. Merre was a great host. The property was just as described. We loved the animals and the chance to feed them plus the little class on taking care of them. Jill the cat was very sweet. We loved hiking the property and the swimming hole. The historic homes drive and the small appliance museum were fun also. Thanks for the great time.
We enjoyed this delightful rustic cottage. We were very comfortable with everything we needed. The hosts are super accommodating and always attentive to needs or questions. Love the animals and the peace and quiet. It was our farm away from home.
We needed a place to stay while traveling to the area for a funeral. It was nice not being in the middle of a city trapped in a hotel, having a place to be outside and breathe the fresh air, with livestock nearby, brought some peace to our stay. Felt very much at home since we live in the middle of nowhere ourselves, this place was perfect! Merre was quick to communicate and accommodate to our needs, and fresh eggs and bread just made it that much better. Highly recommend staying here!
