Background on The Woodlands
The Woodlands is in Montgomery County with a portion extending into Harris County. The Woodlands is part of the Houston – The Woodlands – Sugar Land Metro area. The population here has expanded tremendously since the year 2000 when there was a little less than 56,000 people living here. The most recent estimates show that more than 116,000 people currently live here. The Woodlands is located about 28 miles North of Houston. Originally The Woodlands was known as a “bedroom community.” A bedroom community or “commuter town” is defined as a town whose residents work in other towns but live, eat and sleep in their less developed town. Bedroom communities were known to have very little commercial or industrial activity aside from a few small, locally owned businesses. The Woodlands is a little less than 44 square miles in size with a very, very small portion of that being water. This portion of Texas is heavily forested, and the trees have remained intact for shade as well as decoration. The climate here in The Woodlands is humid subtropical. The summers here tend to get very hot and can sometimes be oppressive where as the winters tend to be very short but cold. The hottest part of the year is from the end of May until the end of September when the daily average high is almost 90 degrees. The low for this time of year is in the mid 70’s. The cold season usually lasts less than three months. From the end of November until the end of February the daily average high is just under 68 degrees. The average low for this time is around 43 degrees. It rarely goes below freezing here but it does tend to get a little cold during the winter months. The winter climate is great for those who don’t want to experience a freezing cold winter but still want to enjoy sweater season.
Villages in The Woodlands
Here in The Woodlands the subdivisions are referred to as villages. Each village has something different to offer and is like its own little town. Most villages have shopping centers, schools, healthcare facilities as well as various places of worship. These villages were created back in 1974 and each one has various styles of homes found within. The prices also vary from village to village. The villages for you to pick from in The Woodlands are Alden Bridge, Carlton Woods, Cochran’s Crossing, College Park, Creekside Park, Grogan’s Mill, Indian Springs, Panther Creek, Sterling Ridge, Town Center/The Waterway. Some of the amenities found in these villages are things like golf courses, restaurants and recreation centers.
Education in The Woodlands
Students here in The Woodlands can attend school in either the Conroe, Magnolia or Tomball Independent School Districts. In Conroe there are 11 elementary schools, 3 intermediate schools, 2 junior high schools and 3 high schools. The Conroe School District is the main school district for people living in The Woodlands but if you live in the May Valley area of Sterling Ridge your children can attend the Smith Elementary School, the Bear Branch 6th Grade Campus, the Bear Branch Junior High School or Magnolia High School. The Tomball Independent School District has three elementary schools, one junior high school as well as one high school. Where you live in The Woodlands is going to dictate which school your child is going to attend.
