Homestead is a midsize the city in Miami Dade County Florida in the metropolitan Miami area. Located just 35 miles southwest of Miami, Homestead covers a landmass of approximately 14 mi.² and has a population of about 63,000. Despite being part of one of the country’s larger metropolitan areas, Homestead still retains strong ties to its agricultural roots. It is these roots from which Homestead derived its name.  

 

Homestead has a tropical monsoon climate which tends to produce hot and humid summers with average temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s. Winters are milder with far less humidity and temperatures averaging in the low 70s.

 

One of the strongest selling points to living in Homestead is its seemingly unlimited access to the stunning beauty of its natural surroundings. For an even deeper appreciation of nature in the area, Homestead is conveniently located near two amazing natural parks. Just west of Homestead is Everglades National Park which is home to vast mangrove forests and watery sawgrass plains. The Everglades are the natural habitat for alligators, ibis, eagles, manatees, and panthers.

 

To the East of Homestead is Biscayne National Park encompassing the bay, barrier islands, and coral reefs. Biscayne National Park protects four distinct ecosystems and provides a nursery for larval and juvenile fish, molluscs, crustaceans, and manatees.

 

Within the city limits there are no less than 13 public parks and recreation spaces for Homestead residents to enjoy. Homestead Bayfront Park, for example, has all the amenities one would look for in a public park (playground, picnic shelter, pavilion) while also offering a beautiful beach and marina right on the shores of the beautiful Biscayne Bay.

 

Culturally there is a lot to take in and experience in Homestead, Florida. The crown jewel of the city’s cultural experience is the recently renovated Seminole Theatre. First opened in 1921, it was renovated in 1940 with the iconic Art Deco façade that is there today.  It closed its doors in 1979 and was almost completely destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.  In 2014, the residents of Homestead set out to restore it and in October 2015, the Seminole Theatre opened its doors once again. Today the theatre serves as the premiere performing arts center of Homestead with some of the best live theater, music, dance productions in the region.

 

To educate and promote the visual arts in the city, ArtSouth has been a steady influence in the community since 2000. ArtSouth provides a centralized public cultural arts venue that fosters the creation, understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the arts through, exhibitions, performances and educational programs.

 

Schools in Homestead are administered through the Miami-Dade School, district, one of the largest in the country. Amongst the highest rated schools in Homestead are: Air Base Elementary School, Somerset Academy At Silver Palms, Medical Academy For Science And Technology (M.A.S.T.) @ Homestead, and Somerset Academy Charter High School.
