Learn More About North Miami, Florida

Sitting on Biscayne Bay, North Miami is a suburban city in northeast Miami-Dade County in the state of Florida. It is situated just around 14 miles to the north of Miami. With a population of more than 60,000, it is one of the largest cities in Miami-Dade County. The city, which covers a total area of about 10 square miles (more than 15 percent water), has North Miami Beach, Westview, Golden Glades, Opa-Locka, Sunny Isles Beach, Bay Harbor Islands and Pinewood among its neighboring areas. It operates a council-manager system of government.

Originally known as Arch Creek, North Miami was first settled by non-natives towards the end of the 19th century. One Mr. Ihle was the first to arrive in the area in 1891. He bought 80 acres of land from the state and used the land for farming. The area had grown to become a thriving farming community by the first decade of the 20th century. In the 1920s, the Florida land boom shifted focus to land development, from agriculture. Majority of the eligible community residents voted for incorporation as the Town of Miami Shores in February 1926. The name was partly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean being its then eastern boundary. It was changed to North Miami in 1931. The city was incorporated in 1953.

Around 2010, when North Miami had a population of nearly 60,000, it was ranked as the six-largest municipality in Miami-Dade County. The number of residents has expectedly risen since then. It was estimated at 62,435 in 2015. Going by the 2000 U.S. Census data, this community appears like one with many young people. More than 70 percent of the residents were not older than 44 years and the median age was just 32 years. Considering its proximity to Miami, this city is certainly one to appeal to young professionals. It boasts a high number of Haitian-Americans, one of whom became the mayor in 2001. About 33 percent of the people living here as of 2000 spoke French Creole and around 25 percent had Spanish as their mother tongues.

Perhaps, the most popular community among home buyers in North Miami is San Souci Estates. This is a beautiful neighborhood in the proximity of Biscayne Boulevard and Broad Causeway. It offers a variety of home options to suit different tastes and easy access to many of the area's attractions.

Boasting a friendly subtropical climate, North Miami is a paradise of sort for those who love the outdoors. It is a popular tourist destination offering numerous historical, physical and natural attractions. These include the Miami Auto Museum, which houses a wide selection of classic cars, mini cars and Hollywood cars among others. The area's natural attractions include the over 1,000-acre Oleta River State Park (or Recreation Area), Florida's biggest urban park, and the 8-acre Arch Creek Park.

Bus service is provided by Metrobus, which covers the entire Miami-Dade County. North Miami introduced a free bus service in 2004 to further ease access to local destinations through public transit. The complimentary NoMi Express bus service has reportedly averaged about 750 boardings a day since inauguration.
