Largo is a midsize city in Pinellas County, Florida, in the metropolitan Tampa Bay – St. Petersburg area. Largo is centrally located in the county with Tampa Bay and Clearwater to the north and the Intercostal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico to the west. Its location on the Pinellas Peninsula gives it a fairly moderate climate compared to the rest of mainland Florida. The winters tend to be dry with much of the rain coming in the warmer summer months. The city covers just under 19 mi.² and has a population of just over 80,000. This number has more than tripled since its 1970 total of more than 24,000. This sustained growth is just one of the reasons why Largo has given itself the nickname The City of Progress.
Like a lot of Florida communities, much of every day life revolves around enjoying the beautiful and scenic outdoor amenities. At the heart of Largo’s outdoor recreation scene is their renowned Largo Central Park. This 70-acre park is located in the heart of the city and is famous for its rolling grounds and fountains which have established it as one of the finest parks in the county. The park has eight picnic pavilions, two of which are quite large. It also boasts Rainbow Rotary Playground which is one of the only playgrounds in the Tampa Bay area that is accessible for the disabled.
While visiting the park, be sure to take a ride on one of Largo’s unique and fun attractions, The Largo Central Railroad (LCRR). Founded in 1991, the LCCR offers approximately 1.2 miles of main line track running through the beautifully landscaped Largo Central Park. The railway serves as a shining example of community spirit at work as it was built and is now maintained through the local LCRR club.
For nature lovers, Largo offers the beautiful and scenic Largo Central Park Nature Preserve (LCPNP). This 31-acre swath of land is virtually surrounded by water making it ideal for observing wildlife species of all varieties. The park is home to more than 130 species of birds, otters, red fox, American alligator, marsh rabbits, wild turkey, and bats. The adventurous can take a 5-mile kayak/canoe route which begins at the park and ends at Park Boulevard.
The hub of Largo’s arts and culture scene is the magnificent Largo Cultural Centre which is home spectacular performances in music, dance and theater. Owned and operated by the City of Largo, the LCC offers a year-round schedule, which includes over 150 performances, consisting of a diverse mix of artists. The Performing Arts Center is home to the resident theatre company Eight O'Clock Theatre which performs the latest Broadway and off-Broadway productions. Eight O’Clock Theatre was voted "Best of the Bay" by Tampa Bay Magazine and the Weekly Planet.
Schools in Largo are administered through the Pinellas County School District. Amongst the highest rates schools in the city are Plato Academy, Largo Charter School, Pinellas Preparatory Academy, Oakhurst Elementary School, and Plato Seminole.
