Lying in the proximity of a lake of the same name, Seminole is a coastal city in Pinellas County, Florida. It is surrounded by Indian Rocks Beach, Largo, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg and Madeira Beach. Its center lies just about 4 miles south of the heart of Largo. The city, which is situated about 21 miles from Tampa, provides seamless access to many places in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Area.
The Seminole area was first settled by non-Indian people in the 1840s. It was named for the Seminole Indians who were the original inhabitants. The word "Seminole" is said to have come from the Spanish term "Cimarron," which means "wild men." It was first applied to the Indians in the 1770s after they ran away from northern territories controlled by the British to escape slavery. The locals were involved in a series of wars in the early to mid 1800s to preserve their freedom and land from white settlers. The Seminole Tribe of Florida was not officially recognized until 1957. The city was incorporated in 1970.
The population of Seminole has increased about four times over since 1980, when the total number of residents stood at 4,586. It was estimated at more than 18,000 as of 2015. The city is home to many older individuals. As of 2000 census, the median age of residents was calculated at 59 years. It looks like an ideal place for seniors who would love to live with people of similar ages. Interestingly, Seminole is home to a high percentage of college-educated residents, when compared to that of an average community in America. Notable residents of the city includes author Angela Elwell Hunt, meteorologist John Winter and Major League Baseball player Casey Kotchman.
