Dacula, Georgia
Dacula is a small city in Gwinnett County in the U.S. state of Georgia a population of more than 5,000 people, according to 2015 United States Census Bureau estimate. It is ranked as the 160th-largest community in the state of Georgia.
The area where this family-friendly city currently stands was one of the places in present-day metropolitan Atlanta where whites first settled. It was settled around the period of the War of 1812. The town of Dacula was to emerge in late 19th century. However, significant development was not noticed in the area until the later years of the 20th century. The original name of the town was Hoke, after an executive of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, but it had to be changed when the Post Office Department objected to the choice. The present name was formed from the names of Decatur and Atlanta, two booming cities at the time of Dacula’s founding.
Over the years, Dacula has experienced slow but steady growth. The population stood at 3,848 in 2000, but was 4,442 in 2010. It is presently estimated at over 5,300. There were 1,472 households in the city as of 2010 and an estimated 92 percent of housing units here were occupied. While the number of those living in Dacula is not much, the city’s 30019 zip code goes way beyond its limits, as far as the unincorporated Hamilton Hill. A 2008 demographic study by the Dacula Town Center developers found that 82,719 people living within a 5-mile radius of the 30019 zip code.
Dacula bills itself as the Center of Georgia’s Innovation Crescent, considering its location relative to some of the top institutions in the state, including Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University and Athens’ University of Georgia research centers. The crescent, which covers about 40 percent of state population, is a league of 15 counties and a major life sciences center in Georgia. It has been compared to South Carolina’s Research Triangle.
The city boasts of access to a solid educational system. It is served by Gwinnett County Public Schools, a primary and secondary education system that consistently produces high-flying students in some of the best higher institutions near Dacula. Gwinnett County Public Library system operates 14 branches for cultural and intellectual enhancement of residents. It is not surprising, therefore, to know that the number of adults with a college degree in the city is higher than the national average.
Although Dacula lack a public transportation system at the moment being such a “small town” city, it boasts access to a number of major transportation routes. These include Georgia Highway 316 and the U.S. 29. Air service can be accessed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Briscoe Field also caters to corporate fliers.
Dacula has virtually everything to appeal to both families and businesses. It is particularly fitting for families considering the small town flavor, relatively quiet environment, and access to a good educational system. The city also boasts a very low crime rate.
