Riverside Cottage, Abergwynant (sleeps up to 3) - don't forget your binoculars!

Dolgellau, Wales, United Kingdom

Riverside Cottage (Bwthyn ger yr afon in Welsh), is a tranquil private cottage within the Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) and close to the Mawddach trail. It is a haven for wildlife and nature enthusiasts close to woodland, beaches, mountains & lakes.brbrWe love the outdoors, especially the animals we are able to observe and share it with. Sitting outside and listening to the bubbling Afon Gwynant flow by whilst taking in the surroundings and all the noises of the wildlife is uplifting for the soul, you may even be lucky and spot the dippers as they fly past under the bridge.brbrRiverside Cottage is committed to a greener and sustainable future, where we consider our carbon footprint and the impact we are having on the planet and our local community. We are also passionate about our beautiful surroundings, and we are working hard to nurture a positive relationship with the nature around us. To this end we have installed a central heating system that uses BioLPG. This is a renewable, lower-carbon fuel made from waste oils/fats and plant oils, providing a seamless, lower-emission alternative for heating and cooking. We have also invested in installing new insulation to help prevent heat loss from the property. brbrThe cottage is ideally located; if you wish you can just walk from it and reach a lot of wonderful places. The drive down through the California redwoods is spectacular and we love Abergwynant woods which are a short walk down the road from the cottage. Abergwynant woods are stunning and wonderful to explore. They are tranquil with lots of bird life; including blackcaps, great spotted woodpeckers and flycatchers to name a few. A short distance away you reach the open estuary of the Mawddach trail, from here plenty of waders and other wildlife can be seen. If you are feeling energetic you could carry on walking and cross the Barmouth viaduct into the town to refresh and treat yourself!brbrIf you want to you can jump in your car and go explore the many magnificent sights the area has. Within a short distance there are mountains, lakes, beaches, wooded valleys and stunning views, and approximately an hour away the stunning Yr Wyddaf (Mount Snowdon). During the breeding season, you can visit osprey nests at visitor centres and see the wildlife superstars of the area! For those who like mechanical birds, the Mach Loop is a 13 minute drive away and aircraft can often be heard passing over the area. brbrDolgellau the local town, is only a 10 minute drive and has stores you can stock up in, as well as places to browse around, and eateries to relax and recharge in.brbrThe cottage itself has ample parking, whilst inside there is all the equipment you need to ensure your stay is cozy and comfortable.brbrThe cottage has two bedrooms; the first with a king sized bed, and the second with a small double. We are trying to make Riverside Cottage as sustainable as we can, so all bedding and soft furnishings are filled with wool. This includes the duvets, pillows and cushion inserts. Wool is not only more sustainable, it also has excellent thermo-regulation properties helping keeping you warm or cool as needed. brbrThe living area has a sofa and two comfy chairs, each chair with their own footstool, our resident sheep Aber and Gwyn! There is a TV in the living room and fast WiFi throughout the cottage plus a USB charging plug for those who would like to use it. As well as the central heating there is an electric stove in the living room, and a dining area from which you can look out on the garden and river. brbrThe cottage has a well equipped kitchen and guests will be provided with an inventory ahead of their trip so they can plan accordingly. The bathroom has a bath and shower and all guests will be provided with a bath towel and face towel.brbrOutside there are three different seating areas; a picnic table near the river, a table and chairs to sit and enjoy the garden, and a love seat to relax in by the front porch. In time we are hoping to add a hide in the garden to help visitors have the chance to observe more closely the wildlife around us.brbrWe would love to welcome you to our nature heaven; it is a truly magical place to relax and enjoy all Wales has to offer.brbr** PLEASE KINDLY NOTE before making an enquiry:br*The property is strictly no smoking, no vaping & no e-cigarettes throughout.br*Due to the proximity of the river, we are not accepting bookings with children under the age of 14.br*As we are looking to establish a strong relationship with the wildlife that visits our garden, we are not currently accepting bookings with pets. br*Due to the cottage having steps down to the kitchen and bathroom it is not suitable for wheelchair users.br* There are no facilities at the cottage for the charging of electric vehicles, thank you. Charging points can be found locally at Dolgellau and Barmouth.

From the Victorian glass-panelled front door you enter a modest entrance hall with coat rack and boot storage, with access directly upstairs to the snug, an under eave space with beanbags, TV, and Playstation 3, as well as games and DVDs, a space for teenagers to hang out. These stairs also provide access to the first and second floor bedrooms and bathrooms.brbrTo the left of the stairwell you enter into a large, light living and dining space. The living area is towards the front of the space and is crowned by a large bay window to the front. With a two-seater sofa and chairs facing both the Smart TV and the roaring small log burner, this is the perfect area to chill out of an evening after a day in the famous mountains beyond.brbrThe dining area sits atop beautiful tiled floors. The six-seater wooden dining table allows for family feasts and gives each member of your party enough room to eat, play games, and hang out. A door leads into the ample kitchen at the rear of the property, which is beautifully decorated and houses all the modern appliances. You’ll find an electric oven with induction hobs, fridge freezer, washer dryer, kettle, toaster, and coffee maker (a small range of pods are provided), as well as a stainless-steel sink and plenty of large storage shelves all around.brbrThree bedrooms sit over two floors; the first floor offers a large double bedroom to the front of the property, a king-sized bedroom (which can be changed into twin beds upon prior request) as well as ample wardrobe space and seating, Smart TV and dedicated desk space for remote working. The property can be accessed from the front and rear, with space to store bikes in the utility room situated off the small patio.brbrbrbrThe Neighborhood:brbrDolgellau is a bustling market town full of ancient stone buildings, restaurants, grand hotels, and historic sites. The area is known for its wild, beautiful countryside on the edge of the Mid Wales mountain ranges. Dolgellau also sits along a beautiful estuary, surrounded by mountains, making it a picture-perfect holiday destination. brbrbrbrBeing at the foot of Cader Idris, Dolgellau is known for its exquisite hiking trails. The Precipice Walk is a circular walk that stretches over parts of the 12th-century Nannau estate. Passing through deciduous woodland and overlooking the Mawddach Estuary towards the incomparable Snowdonia Mountain ranges, this is a great walk for the family as, despite its name, it’s a fairly easy hike, only around 5km in distance and has fantastic views.brbrbrbrClimbing Cader Idris itself is a little more challenging. At 2.930 feet, it’s the highest mountain in southern Snowdonia. While it’s a popular challenge, the hike to the summit can take 5 hours, so you might want to use the bathroom at the car park by the foot of the mountain before leaving. The Pony Path heads up the mountainside to the stony cliffs above Llyn y Gader, the fantastic lake. Take in the incredible views of the Mawddach estuary and Barmouth before scrambling to the trig point.brbrbrbrIf coming down rocky, watery canyons is more your style, then a 30-minute drive takes you to the National White Water Centre, Bala. The raging natural rapids are perfect for learning to white water raft or canoe in the most beautiful surroundings. If you’re taking your family, be aware that the minimum age is 12 to take part at the world-class venue.brbrbrbrPerhaps you prefer careering up and down mountains on two wheels Coed y Brenin Mountain Biking Centre, Bala, is popular with mountain bikers worldwide and is situated in Coed y Brenin Forest Park. You can hire bikes, follow trails, walk through the stunning forest, or stop for a cup of tea and a welsh cake at the café.brbrbrbrOf course, at Glanrhyd, you’re only a short distance from the mid-Wales coast and the breathtaking beaches of Cardigan Bay. Fairbourne beach is a mere 8 miles away, and Tal-y-Bont beach is only 10 miles away. Both are fantastic stretches of sand that are ideal for family days at the beach.brbrbrbrBarmouth, the popular Victorian seaside resort, is only a 20-minute drive from your accommodation. Why not make it a walking destination Mawddach trail runs from Dolgellau to Barmouth. This 9.5-mile route is the former railway line and is now an official family-friendly, traffic-free scenic route along the estuary of Afon Mawddach.brbrbrbrGetting Around:brbrTo make the most of everything Snowdonia National Park and Dolgellau have to offer, we recommend having access to a car during your stay. There's a private parking bay a short walk from the property, and for extra cars, there's a public car park just two minutes walk away.brbrbrbrThere's plenty to see on foot around Dolgellau and the mountain trails are directly accessible from the town.brbrbrbrOther Things to Note:brbr• All bed linen and towels are provided.brbr• We welcome pets at Glanrhyd. We ask that you keep them off the soft furnishings and beds.brbr• We kindly ask that you do not smoke when visiting this property.brbr• Please be aware that this property is surrounded by other properties.
