Villa

Oliva - Seven Bedroom Villa, Sleeps 14

Castelvetrano, Castelvetrano, Italy

Oliva is an architect-designed, luxurious take on a traditional Sicilian baglio, characterised by a shady internal courtyard garden enclosed on each side by living and sleeping quarters. Beyond is the panoramic pool and the whispering olive groves that so characterise southwestern Sicily.brbrInside: accommodation at Oliva is spread over the main house and two guesthouses arranged around an internal courtyard. brbrThe main house, which looks south towards the sea, has a splendidly large, high-ceilinged living area furnished with quality, sink-in sofas and decorated in soft, calming greys and whites, a theme that runs throughout the house. Large glass doors provide access to the internal courtyard on one side and the pool area on the other. brbrOff one side of the living area is a dining room and a modern, well-equipped kitchen, while off the other is the gorgeous main suite, complete with en-suite bathroom with separate shower and tub. A flight of stairs leads from the living area up to another bright, panoramic double bedroom, which also has an en-suite shower room. brbrHeading from the living area into and across the internal courtyard one comes to the two guesthouses, one on either side. The first, on the right, has three bedrooms – two twins downstairs and a double upstairs, all with en-suite shower rooms - a private living area and a small kitchen. brbrAccommodation in the second guesthouse is spread over two floors: the ground floor has a twin bedroom with en-suite shower room, a little living area, and a kitchenette, while the first floor, which is accessed from an external flight of steps, is home to a double bedroom with en-suite shower room. Please note that this bedroom is under the sloping eaves and some of the beams are quite low (perhaps not ideal for adults but fine for younger adults and teenagers).brbrOutside: al fresco living at Oliva is full of possibilities!.The internal courtyard, the real heart of the property, has a large covered dining area, ideal for lunch when the sun is at its hottest. brbrPassing through the living room and out of the other side, is another covered living and dining area and, beyond that, raised up, the panoramic pool, from whose decked solarium you may look out over the olive groves to the sea. brbrA further shaded area, between the master bedroom and the pool completes the functional outdoor areas, though the extensive grounds surrounding Oliva are perfect for active kids with energy to burn.brbrCycling in the Menfi area is a very pleasurable pastime, thanks to both the quiet back roads and the purpose-built cycle track along and around the old railway line between Menfi, Porto Palo and Sciacca. We'd be delighted to have bikes delivered to your villa and, if anyone in your group is an inveterate pedaller, arrange for a local guide to show them the best routes.brbrA friendly cat may be seen in the villa's grounds, but he will not enter the house unless encouraged to do so. He is also discouraged from roaming the grounds, but we cannot guarantee that he won't be tempted to sit on the outdoor furniture. We ask all guests not to feed him or to allow him inside.brSome of Sicily's best beaches run along the coast between Mazara del Vallo and Agrigento and many of these, including the ones at the Belice Nature Reserve and Porto Palo, are just a few minutes' drive from Oliva. brbrNot to be missed is the superb archaeological site of Selinunte and the Cave di Cusa, followed, perhaps, by a superb lunch or dinner at the seafront restaurant La Pineta on the beach of the Belice Nature Reserve. Several of the towns nearby are also well worth a visit. Sciacca and Mazara del Vallo both have charming old centres, some great seafood restaurants and working ports with large fishing fleets working the Mediterranean daily. A little further afield but still in easy day-trip distance are Marsala, Trapani and Erice. Caltabellotta is spectacularly situated in the craggy hills overlooking both coast and interior, while Menfi itself is an up-and-coming centre of excellence for the wine trade.brbrThe beaches in the area of Porto Palo-Menfi have received over 20 consecutive Bandiere Blu, attesting to the cleanliness of the water and their general ecological excellence.brbrCycling in the Menfi area is a very pleasurable pastime, thanks to both the quiet back roads and the purpose-built cycle track along and around the old railway line between Menfi, Porto Palo and Sciacca. We’d be delighted to have bikes delivered to your villa and, if anyone in your group is an inveterate pedaller, arrange for a local guide to show them the best routes.brbrArrival details will be confirmed by The Thinking Traveller after your villa is confirmed.brbrThe Thinking Traveller can organise transfers and car hire and an agent will be in touch with you once your villa is confirmed.

Casa Agave - Three Bedroom Villa, Sleeps 6

Castelvetrano, Castelvetrano, Italy

An exceptional summer house in a unique beachfront setting.brbrImmersed in the vineyards that so characterise the Menfi area of Sicily, Casa Agave is one of those rare villas that could be said to have it all: stunning sea views, a front-row beach location, a gate leading onto the sands of the Belice Nature Reserve, and a dreamy infinity pool. Once arrived, you may wish never to leave.brbrInside: accommodation at Casa Agave is organised over two floors. The main entrance takes one into the spacious open-plan, sea-view living and dining area, whose double height ceilings, double aspect glass sliding doors and clerestory windows make for an airy atmosphere. The sliding glass doors lead straight out onto the pool area on one side and the side terraces on the other. brbrTo one end of the living and dining area is the well-equipped kitchen with breakfast table, views out to sea and access via French windows to the shady al fresco dining area. brbrAccommodation on the ground floor is completed by a double bedroom with en-suite shower room, a double-twin bedroom and a family shower room. Both bedrooms have direct access to the surrounding terraces. Stairs lead up to the first floor gallery overlooking the living and dining area below. From here one accesses the third bedroom, a double with en-suite shower room and a little roof terrace.brbrOutside: the outdoor areas at Casa Agave provide space for relaxing, having fun and enjoying long convivial meals. Accessed directly from the kitchen is the shady al fresco dining area, which, like most of the outdoor areas looks out to sea. brbrA few steps away from here, and seamlessly connected via large glass sliding doors to the indoor living room, is the dreamy pool area, whose infinity pool, complete with hydromassage corner, is flanked by terraces furnished with sunloungers and a large romantic daybed. Steps lead down from here to the garden, which is planted with palm trees, agave and other Mediterranean flora, and furnished with a lovely decked area overlooking the beach and the sea, the perfect spot for an aperitif as the sun goes down.brbrThis area is also where you will find the magical sea gate, which opens directly onto the dunes and beach of the Belice Nature Reserve, a 3km-long stretch of sand and shallow waters that rarely gets very busy, even in August.brbrPlease note that access to the beach from the villa is via a natural, uneven path that may be challenging for those with limited mobility, specific health concerns, or young children. The path is located within a protected nature reserve and cannot be modified.brbrCycling in the Menfi area is a very pleasurable pastime, thanks to both the quiet back roads and the purpose-built cycle track along and around the old railway line between Menfi, Porto Palo and Sciacca. We'd be delighted to have bikes delivered to your villa and, if anyone in your group is an inveterate pedaller, arrange for a local guide to show them the best routes.brbrCasa Agave features an infinity pool, offering swimmers stunning views while in the pool. There is a drop from the infinity edge, so we recommend children are supervised at all times. Please refer to our general safety page if you would like more information about infinity pools.brbrBecause of natural changes to the coastline from season to season, the sandy beach in front of this property may not look as it does in the photos.brbrPlease note that there is a neighbouring property to one side of Casa Agave, which is almost completely masked by thick barrier vegetation.brbrCats may be seen in the villa grounds; villa staff will discourage their presence and we advise all clients to do the same, however we cannot guarantee that they will stay away from outside furniture.brWith one of Sicily's loveliest stretches of sandy beach on your doorstep (not to mention the seafood restaurant of La Pineta - about 2km along the beach of the Belice Nature Reserve), you may never feel the need to explore the other lovely beaches in the area, such as the one at Porto Palo, which has received 20 consecutive Blue Flags, attesting to the cleanliness of the water and their general ecological excellence. brbrCasa Agave is ideally placed for visiting the stunning archaeological site of Selinunte and the Cave di Cusa, while there are several interesting historic towns within easy driving distance, including Sciacca and Mazara del Vallo, both of which have charming old centres, some great restaurants and working ports with a large fishing fleets that work the Mediterranean daily. A little further afield but still in easy day-trip distance are Marsala, Trapani and Erice.
