The Rookery Cottage is a quiet retreat in the heart of the Middle Raccoon River Valley. Situated on our private acreage, this rustic cottage overlooks a prairie and woodlands. Located next to Whiterock Conservancy, guests can easily access 40+ miles of scenic trails out the back door, or float the nearby river. Then, return to relax by a campfire and stargaze under some of Iowa's darkest skies. brbrA rookery is a nesting site for herons, a bird that prefers quiet, undisturbed habitat near water. And so the Rookery Cottage seeks to provide a peaceful, natural escape from the daily grind.brbrThis building used to be a flower shop and was built using reclaimed barn board and other re-purposed materials. We converted it to a guesthouse but kept a lot of the rustic charm. It sleeps 6 with two queen beds and a queen-size futon. Heated floors and A/C keep you comfy in every season. Fast and free wifi access makes it convenient to work remotely while surrounded by nature or just stream a movie after a long hike. The kitchen is equipped with sink, mini fridge, microwave, toaster, electric skillet, crockpot, utensils and coffeemaker. Alternatively, a charcoal grill or fire pit can be used for outdoor cooking. We provide firewood, charcoal and lighter fluid, as well as coffee, creamer/sugar, and a tea assortment.brbrOur home is also on the acreage, along with dogs, chickens, cows, honey bees and a goat. Deer, wild turkey, coyote, beaver, and songbirds fill the surrounding woods and nearby clearing. brA remote cabin sitting between a spring-fed pond and the Middle Raccoon River in a beautiful, yet secluded valley. This site is designated as a strictly hike-in, bike-in, or horseback ride-in site from River campground. A one-mile hike in, this cabin was moved into the valley from 805 Main Street, Coon Rapids many years ago. brbrBEDROOMS: One room, 6 twin sleeping platforms with foam mattresses. Bring your own bedding. brbrBATHROOMS: Port-a-potty outhouse, solar shower. NO water and NO electricity. Toilet paper is provided. brbrOUTDOORS: Great for fishing trips and horseback rides! We have fishing equipment, mountain bikes and kayaks/canoes (river level and weather permitting) for rent. brbrThis traditional large farmhouse has plenty of room for your get-together! The whole family can enjoy the beautiful views and wildlife. The layout is spacious and welcoming, with original wooden floors and plenty of seating. Oak Ridge Farmhouse is directly adjacent to Oak Ridge RV Campground which features 14 electric hookup sites, shower house and bathroom, rentable steel horse pens, and hiking, biking and equestrian trail access. brbrBEDROOMS: There are five bedrooms in this house. The first-floor bedroom contains one queen and one twin, while three of the upstairs bedrooms each have two twin beds. The last upstairs bedroom has two queen beds and a seating area. Bedding is provided. brbrBATHROOMS: Two bathrooms (one upstairs and one downstairs) each with sink, toilet & shower. The upstairs hallway also has an extra vanity sink & mirror. Clean towels provided. brbrKITCHEN AMENITIES: Kitchen is equipped to serve large groups. Includes full-sized refrigerator, stove, microwave, coffee pot, dishes and utensils. brbrLIVING/DINING AREAS: Several locally made tables and comfortable couches in the living and dining areas provide ample seating. brbrOUTDOORS: Includes five picnic tables, charcoal grill, fire ring and is directly neighboring Oak Ridge RV Campground.
