High-quality bolthole and cosy sanctuary for 2 people in a picturesque village location with WiFi.

Richmond, England, United Kingdom

Ivy Cottage is a charming, stone-built self-catering holiday cottage in the heart of a small, picturesque village called Langthwaite in Arkengarthdale, just 3 miles from Reeth and within the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park.brbrIvy Cottage has been transformed through recent renovations into a high-quality bolthole and cosy sanctuary for two people. The sympathetic renovation has retained much of the original character and features such as exposed beams and a stone wall. Yet it still offers contemporary appliances and furnishings for modern day living and a true home from home experience.brbrThis extremely welcoming holiday cottage offers everything you need for a relaxing stay and is surprisingly spacious for a one-bedroom property. Every nook and cranny bursts with a creative mix of old and new. You enter the good sized living room with dining area. The focal point is no doubt the multi-fuel stove situated in a stunning inglenook fireplace in the centre of the room. Not only does it look fabulous, the stove throws out the heat when lit, creating a warm and cosy ambiance to unwind on the comfy sofa.brbrOff the living room, down a couple of steps, is the quaint and traditional cottage kitchen with an Aga. Packed full of quality cooking equipment, there’s also plenty of storage space for your own supplies and the additional bonus of a full-size fridge and freezer.brbrUpstairs is the real treat. A spacious bedroom with a sumptuous king bed, beautiful soft furnishings and views to the village and the fells beyond. Off the bedroom is the high quality, modernised ensuite bathroom with bath and shower over.brbrThis stunning holiday home is heated throughout by modern electric radiators, includes free, unlimited Wi-Fi and a 43” smart TV. There is a small, enclosed patio area to the front of the cottage to enjoy a glass of wine of a summer evening or a coffee first thing…no better place to hear the song of the birds and the babble of the not-so-distant stream known as Arkle Beck.brbrOff the patio there is a secure, covered bike store, which is spacious with plenty of room for two bikes. There is a hose nearby to keep your bikes squeaky clean, heating in the bike store to dry your bikes off and electric sockets for electric bike charging. The bike store also doubles up as a drying room for outdoor walking gear.brbrAlthough the cottage caters for modern needs, be prepared to be thrown back in time, in this oldy worldly village. ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ fans will no doubt recognise the village and surrounding areas as lots of the original series was filmed in the area…and it really hasn’t changed a bit!brbrIf you enjoy a tipple or two in a real Yorkshire pub, you are in luck. One of the smallest and most unique pubs in the area is a short hop, skip and a jump from Ivy Cottage. The landlady is a fountain of knowledge on the area and serves some fantastic real Yorkshire Ale. The award-winning CB Inn is around a 10 to 15-minute walk from the accommodation, which offers gastro style meals, real Yorkshire ales and an extensive wine and gin menu.brbrThe location is fantastic, with great walking, running and cycling straight from the doorstep. The area is full of the remains of the lead mining industry, walks to suit all abilities from high level hikes up Fremington Edge or Calver Hill to low level strolls along the Arkle Beck. The road twists and goes up across the green, as you reach the top the Buck Inn is in front of you (white pub), public loos on the right-hand side. The sign says Langthwaite 3, Barnard Castle 13.brbrTurn right alongside it. Drive up this road for three miles including over two cattle grids. After the second you come down into Langthwaite - there is a sign for the CB Inn and then later for the Red Lion. As you pass the telephone box on the right-hand side take the next right over the small bridge into the village square. (If you get to the Methodist chapel on the left hand side or the CB Inn on the right, you have gone too far!)brbrFrom the North (and East) - via the A66. At Scotch Corner, turn onto the A66 towards Penrith. After several miles, come off the A66 (dual carriageway at this point) to the left sign posted to Reeth and continue several miles over undulating and variable countryside right over the top of the moor until you come down, over a small bridge and up to a T junction. This three-storey holiday home is striking and will not disappoint. Stone built with a gorgeous stone arch over the front door welcomes you into the grand entrance hall.brbrOff the entrance hall to the left is the beautifully modernised kitchen diner, offering you ample work and cupboard space. There are two ovens, one electric with induction hob and the other a traditional electric Aga. The kitchen is also thoroughly kitted out with almost every utensil under the sun, ready and waiting for you to cook up a storm during your stay. Off the kitchen is a utility room housing a washing machine and tumble dryer and downstairs cloakroom with w.c. and basin. Via the kitchen, there is internal access to the garage.brbrThe dining room is on the ground floor with seating for 12 people around a large banquet table with a log burner at the far end of the room ready to be lit for cosy heat and ambiance. The large sash windows allow views across the farmland opposite.brbrThe carpeted stairs to the first floor give access to a large landing which boasts gorgeous large prints and a chandelier. Off the hallway you shall find two of the six bedrooms, and a large, comfortable living room with Smart TV and log burning stove. Down the way is the family bathroom with shower cubicle, bath, basin and w.c.brbrThe bedrooms on the first floor consist of one double bedroom which is light and airy and one twin bedroom with two single beds. The single bedroom also allows access into the garden of Bridge House through the glass panelled door, which when closed allows the sunlight to stream into the twin room.brbrContinue upstairs to the second floor where you shall find four more bedrooms all with ensuites. The first is the master super king bedroom, spacious and airy with views out to the farmland and beck opposite plus an ensuite shower room. There is also a king bedroom with another ensuite shower room to the rear of the property. The final two double bedrooms share a Jack and Jill bathroom with shower over, one room faces towards the beck with a lovely spot to sit and read between the two sash widows, the other overlooks the garden. EV Charging is available (charges will apply).brbrThe garden is to the side of the property, accessed either by the front door or as mentioned through the twin bedroom. The patio is home to a large wooden outdoor table and a BBQ to dine alfresco in the summer months. The garden area is above the patio and accessed via stone slabbed steps. We also have other great pubs only a short drive away. Gunnerside offers a fantastic community pub and proper pub grub. In the opposite direction there is a choice from the Kearton Country Hotel bar or Keld Lodge. Further down dale there is the Punch Bowl, which offers amazing gastro style meals and has a fabulous gin and ale selection. Reeth has three great pubs and a hotel with wine bar, all dog friendly. And of course, one not to be missed is the famous Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in England only about a 20-minute drive from Muker.brbrThe area is brilliant for walking, straight from the door you have access to walks in almost every direction. So, grab your dogs and your walking boots and explore the local trails, from more strenuous hikes up Kisdon Hill and Gunnerside Gill to the lower-level strolls along the River Swale.brbrIf cycling is more your thing, we have plenty of that here in Swaledale. Bridge House sits directly on the route of the 2014 Tour de France route as well as being on the Tan Hill Loop which is a popular 27-mile road ride loop up to the Tan Hill Pub…do it anti clockwise for an easy downhill on the way back to the Bridge House. For those riding with younger children there is the Swale Trail, which is a 12-mile trail which runs from Reeth to Keld (accessible from Muker). This is quite a unique trail in the National Park as about 70% of the trail is off road. The trail runs along the bottom of the valley, but there are some steep sections towards Keld which little legs may struggle with.brbrBridge House is perfectly based to explore the Northern Dales and the market towns of Hawes, Leyburn and Richmond. Slightly further afield there is Kirby Stephen and Barnard Castle.brbrbrLayoutbrbrGround Floor - Kitchen, utility, dining room, internal access to garage, downstairs cloakroombrbrFirst Floor - Living room, twin bedroom, double bedroom, family bathroom with shower cubicle, bath, basin and w.c. brbrSecond Floor - Super king bedroom with ensuite shower room, king bedroom with ensuite shower room, two double bedrooms sharing a Jack and Jill ensuite bathroom with shower over bath.brbrbrSleeping Arrangementsbrbr1 Super King with ensuite br4 Doubles, 1 with ensuite shower room, 2 sharing a Jack and Jill bathroom Wirth shower over. br1 twin bedroombrbrbrExteriorbrbrOutside - Patio area with wooden table and chairs, BBQ, garden (young children should be supervised due to incline), parking for one car (further parking can be found within the village).brbrbrGetting therebrbrGuest Directions to Bridge House, MukerbrPlease allow extra time for narrow country lanes or if travelling in winter. If arriving after dark, we recommend keeping headlights on and driving slowly once in the Dales.brbrIf using Google Maps please check that you select Bridge House in Muker as there are other cottages with the same name in nearby villages. brbrBy Carbr• From Leeds / York area:brTake the A1(M)/A1 north, then follow signs for the A66 west (if coming from Yorkshire) or join the A66 via Scotch Corner. Continue on the A66 until you reach the turn for the A685 / A684 towards Kirkby Stephen / Hawes, then follow that into Swaledale. From Hawes, follow the signs into Swaledale, aiming for Muker.br• From Durham / Coast:brUse the A66 or A689 to reach the northern fringes of the Yorkshire Dales, then head south into Swaledale via Keld / Gunnerside, following local signage to Muker.br• From Richmond (North Yorkshire) , follow signs for Reeth on the B6270, which takes you into Swaledale. Continue through Reeth, staying on the B6270, passing through Gunnerside, and finally arriving in Muker.br IMPORTANT – Weather Warning:brIn bad weather (snow, ice, heavy rain, or fog), we strongly recommend sticking to the lower Swaledale road via Reeth, which follows the valley floor. This route stays at a lower elevation and is generally more reliable and accessible than taking high moor roads (such as via Askrigg or Tan Hill).brAvoid the high pass routes from Wensleydale (e.g., Hawes via Buttertubs Pass) or Keld, as they can become impassable or hazardous in poor conditions.brFinal Stretch & Parking at Bridge Housebr• Once in Muker, you will be heading towards the centre of the village. Bridge House is in the heart of Muker, directly opposite a babbling beck (small stream) that runs through the village.br• You’ll find the property on the main road through Muker village. It’s a stone-built house, three‐storey, clearly visible from the road. If you reach a church or the village shop then you are very close.br• Parking: There is off-road parking for one car in front of the garage. If you have more than one vehicle, or larger vehicles, you will need to use the local lay‐bys nearby, or the village car park (note: charges may apply in the village car park). Please do not mistake the slip road into the car park as a layby, you should not park on this slip road. brNotes & Useful Tipsbr• Sat Nav Postcode: DL11 6QGbr• Some Sat Navs may try to route you via high moor roads — always check for weather conditions before travelling.br• Print or screen grab these instructions as mobile signal can be patchy in the area.brbrbrAccessibilitybrbrThe property is not wheelchair accessible. brThere is one small step to access the cottage. brThere is a staircase to the first floor and second floor with a sturdy handrail. brOne bathroom has a bath with a shower over, the others are shower cubicles with small steps into them. brbrIf you have any specific needs, please contact us, we are happy to answer any questions.
