Stayed Mar 14, 2026Our visit coincided with a severe rain storm so we could not enjoy all aspects of the house but it was still great. Kept us safe and dry!

Stayed Feb 7, 2026This is a perfect place for a getaway from the busy life. House was very spacious and pool was beautiful. The only thing I would recommend would be an automated gate system because going in and out of the house with it pouring rain is not ideal. It can get really dark at night so bring some headlamps so you can see if you plan on leaving the house and arriving after sunset.

Stayed Jan 20, 2026Four of us stayed at Kai Malolo for two weeks. We had a wonderful time. The home is spacious and light with spectacular views of the ocean. We watched whales from the lanai. The pool was exceptional and we spent several days just hanging out enjoying the ocean breezes and the pool. Management was very responsive whenever we had any issues. The day after Kilauea erupted they came and pressure washed around the house to remove any ash and Pele's hair. This is the perfect home for a relaxing, private Hawaiian adventure.

Stayed Aug 28, 2025Truly the most amazing place I have ever had the opportunity to stay. The privacy was lovely. We enjoyed having a pool to ourselves and the whole property is so beautiful! Even the drive through the forest to get there- it felt nice and secluded with nature everywhere. Easy drive to beaches and VNP! This was our first time visiting the big island and I can’t imagine staying anywhere else! Would love to come back and stay here again someday.

Stayed Aug 14, 2025We had a magical, restorative stay at Kai Malolo. The house is beautiful, and the location is breathtaking. The house has everything you may need (and more!) to cook all of your meals at home, and is clearly cared for. Terry provided lots of recommendations, which was great! It’s in a very peaceful and quiet location, and you can drive to Pāhoa or Hilo very easily from there. If you are looking for a non-tourist experience, this is your place. We would most definitely stay here again - it was so hard to leave!

Stayed Jun 22, 2025My family of six had a wonderful stay at Kai Malolo. The location is one of a kind and having the pool was an added bonus. We really liked being away from everything, but not being too far of a drive to get something that you might need. I thought a house off the grid would be a little hard to relax and enjoy, especially when reading the house instructions about how to restart the generator if the batteries were empty, but if we weren’t told, we wouldn’t have known we were off the grid. And having the AC - at least in the family room- was marvelous!!! We rented houses on four of the islands on this trip, and this one was one of the best, although I would prefer working with the owner rather than a rental agent as in this case. Terry was very thorough but I thought I might have to get a lawyer to help me understand the many pages of the rental agreement that I has to sign. But we had everything we needed. The appliances may be a little past their prime - a few things had a hand written note of them to show that they were not working (the microwave and freezer in the kitchen for example). But they had replacements on other counters and/or in different rooms, and we didn’t feel like we were lacking anything. The record player/phonograph would not power on, but who needs that kind of entertainment when you can enjoy the wonderful sounds of the ocean just outside. All in all, it was a wonderful location with a well designed home that allowed my family greatly enjoyed!!

Stayed May 16, 2025Amazing secluded retreat. Enjoyed the pool and extras provided. Walk to cliffs was fun. Beautiful views, saw a handful of sea turtles swimmingby the shore. Nicely decorated house with great views from inside and on lanai. Beautiful sunrise view from the rocks, worth catching it. The most unique place we've stayed. Absolutely loved it.

Stayed Apr 29, 2025Beautiful home and host is helpful and easy to communicate with. It is perfect for anyone wanting to be away the hustle and bustle. Lovely views in natural setting. Birders in our family were delighted by the Hawaiian hawk that was spotted one day as we hung out at the pool. Tree frogs serenaded at night. Beds were comfortable and the house was well provisioned. Heat sensitive people should note the home is only partially air conditioned (in the living area) but there are fans in all the bedrooms. Do walk down the path to the ocean cliffs. There's a gorgeous view of crashing waves (when the sea seemed calm from the house view) and a surprise sea arch to enjoy! A great spot to explore the Hilo side from.

Stayed Feb 2, 2025We had a wonderful stay. The house is located on a beautiful one lane road along the coast. There is a path leading down to the ocean, but you can see the spray of the waves hitting the cliffs from the house. The house was great. The kitchen was well equipped. When you open the windows a cool breeze blows through. The lanai was spacious.

Stayed Jan 3, 2025This home has stunning views! 6 of us enjoyed everything the home has to offer; the private pool with the waterfall/fountain, the large deck overlooking the ocean, the short 2-minute walk to the ocean cliffs, the large open living space, and each couple was very comfortable in their bedroom. Driving up to the property after dark was enjoyable hearing the waves and tree frogs surrounding us, truly felt very secluded. There is one friendly neighbor next door that stopped to say hi to us. It is a bit of a drive to some of the sights as mentioned in previous reviews, but we felt like we were in our own world alone, and still able to fit a lot in during our stay. Absolutely recommend the Botanical Garden's! The drive up to Mauna Kea just before sunset (would recommend leaving by 3pm to get up there in time for stargazing) was incredible! Also enjoyed a few local restaurants and bars at the recommendation of Terry and the neighbor. Would love to stay at this home again if we make it back to the Big Island. This home provided everything we needed for the stay!

Stayed Dec 3, 2024We enjoyed everything about our stay at this place! Starting from the drive into the house through a mystical beautiful forest, the cliffs behind the house are a such a lovely way to start the day, the great lanai to watch the ocean and hear the waves crashing and all of it! Kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed, water was hot, A/C is only in the living room (rooms all have a fan). We liked the nearby town of Pahoa a lot (check out the thai place on the main street). Would definitely stay again!

Stayed Oct 13, 2024Shhh...don't tell anybody, but this is the PERFECT Hawaiian retreat on the whole island. We've done the resort thing and the beach house thing, but this secluded home on the lava cliffs is everything. Just stunning! We loved Kai Malolo! The hosts thought of everything to make this our home away from home - plenty of towels, well-appointed kitchen, labeled cabinets for easability, lots of games for rainy days and the refreshing pool - with a waterfall - for sunny days! There were even yoga mats and weights available. Cleanliness was top notch and we felt extremely safe and secure. We'll miss falling asleep to the sounds of coqui frogs and crashing waves. The lush flora and ocean views with our own private sea arch (prettier than the one at Volcano National Park) is breathtaking. The neighbor dogs barked a quick, friendly hello, but were not disruptive or a nuisance in any way - we actually enjoyed having them around! We found the chickens, birds, geckos, and mongoose on property entertaining and saw beautiful peacocks strolling on the winding road to the house. We are regular VRBO users when traveling and this was the best property we've stayed in. So, go ahead and tell people about it if you must. Just don't rent it when we want to visit (haha)...because when we return to the big island one day, we'd love to stay here again! Mahalo!
