Set in the heart of the magical Chianti Classico region, this wonderful 6 BD – 6 BA Villa dates back to the 15th century and is strategically located with a short distance from the lively village of Castellina in Chianti.

Surrounded by an exceptionally beautiful landscape, the property is perfect to enjoy relaxing time with family & friends and caters to those who are ready to mix relaxation with the exploration of the most fabulous places in Tuscany!

About the property.

The property has been within the family of the current owners for 4 generations. It
includes three houses out of the five that make a tiny borough called Sommavilla, an ancient settlement dating back to the 15th century.
The main villa is the oldest of the whole borough and was run by friars back in the centuries: it served as an inn on the ancient path between Chianti's main villages of Castellina in Chianti and Radda in Chianti, where travelers could stop by and get supplies for themselves and their horses.

With a total surface of approx. 4500 sq.f. the villa comes with a total of 6 bedrooms (named after their colors) and 6 bathrooms. There is also a large billiard room, three living rooms, a large wine collection and a spectacular room in the cellar, featuring some impressive and mysterious antique graffiti designs all over its walls.

Set within 50 hectares of land, the property features a vast terrace garden with a beautiful swimming pool (23x46 ft.), strategically built over an embankment overlooking the estate's olive groves, vineyards and woods.

The stunning views from the villa and its garden are absolutely unparalleled: no signs of civilization can be spotted apart from the historical village of San Polo in Rosso in the far distance and the imposing Castle of Brolio further away.

The property’s private land offers several tracks that allow for beautiful walks in the woods, where deers and hares can be easily spotted. A large aviary, where several species of exotic pheasants are bred (such as the Lady Amherst, the crested fireback and the silver pheasants) can be admired from the private garden.

The second house on the estate is a converted farmhouse and serves as the villa’s laundry facility. While the third house is an old barn, used as a garage for the estate’s machinery.

The location.

The estate is located just about 5 minutes away by car from the beautiful village of Castellina in Chianti, one of the oldest and best preserved places within the Chianti Classico territory. From the villa it is also possible to reach Castellina on foot, by taking an easy path through the woods (abt. 30 minutes walk).

Siena can be reached in just about 30 minutes by car (17 miles), while Florence can be reached within abt. a 40 minutes drive (26 miles).
Castellina in Chianti offers a wide selection of great wineries, restaurants, markets and shops. Monteriggioni and San Gimignano are both famous for their tower-spiked walls and can be easily reached from the property.
Famous piazzas, historic churches, ancient castles and renowned museums in Florence and Siena are all within easy reach as well. The village of Radda in Chianti is just about 10 minutes away, hosting Rampini, one of the area's best ceramics houses.

The Chianti region is stunning throughout the year and each season offers truly unforgettable memories, while touring the historic wine cellars and enjoying the tasting of several wonderful local wines… Strolling through the quaint streets and piazzas of the many little towns in Chianti and visiting the fresh food markets to find just the right ingredients to accompany a new bottle of wine is definitely a must!

The pool area.

The swimming pool is located at the far end of the villa’s garden so to guarantee peace and quiet for the guests resting inside the house at daytime.
There are two showers (indoor and outdoor), as well as a changing room and a bathroom. The pool is surrounded by shaded areas with comfortable deck chairs as well as a solarium with sun loungers.
There is a stone barbecue in the area as well as a dining table for up to 14 guests (strategically located under a large laurel bush, providing a fresh spot in the hot summer days). Another stone barbecue is located in the garden next to a more intimate Virginia creeper covered pergola with a stone and wrought iron table that can accommodate 8 people.

The Layout.

The main Villa spreads over 3 floors and comes with a total of 6 bedrooms/6 bathrooms, so to comfortably accommodate a total of 13 guests.

Ground floor:

- Two dining rooms:
o The first (directly connected to the kitchen) can accommodate up to 8 people and comes with an old “pietra serena” fireplace, perfectly suitable for cooking on the grill (featuring a vast collection of old copper kitchen tools and three rattan chaise longues to enjoy the fireplace). This rooms also features a 42” TV with extra speaker and subwoofer, SKY satellite tv and Netflix access.
o The main dining room accommodates 14 people on a large antique “fratino” table, has three comfortable armchairs covered in vintage velvet on a soft Iranian wool carpet facing the “pietra serena” fireplace. Rare vintage Empoli glass chandeliers can also be found in the dining room.

- The main dining room gives access to the drawing room, where an impressive collection of Chianti Classico wines from the end of the Sixties/beginning of the Seventies covers a whole wall of the room from the floor to the ceiling. This wine collection has a unique value, being the only existing one so far that gathers all the labels produced by every single wine estate in the Chianti Classico area in that specific period. It also provides a very special feel to the drawing room, that features a vintage 3-seater sofa, two comfortable vintage armchairs and two Tuscan Renaissance armchairs all covered in an exquisite dark green velvet, that beautifully blends with the red silk shades of the table lamps creating a gentlemen’s club atmosphere.
The drawing room also features a “pietra serena” fireplace and a 32” TV with extra speaker and Netflix access.

- The drawing room leads the way to a spacious 33 x 33 ft. terrace, where a dining table for 14 guests and vintage rattan armchairs are arranged under a long covered pergola.
From the terrace, the view spans all over the Chianti Classico hills with only a few villages in the distance.
- On the ground floor there is a more intimate covered veranda with geraniums all along the windows and a dining table for 6 guests.
- The kitchen, which has been completely renovated in late 2016, is connected to the smaller dining room and has a working table that sits 4 guests. It is fully equipped with double dishwashers, large fridge, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine, food processor, electric squeezer, pasta machine, electric meat slicer and oven with steam function.
- The main door of the house gives access to a lawn where a large umbrella provides the shade for a round table that sits 4 guests and several sun chairs.
- There are two bedrooms on the ground floor:
The Indigo bedroom with Tuscan 19th century furniture, a wrought iron Queen size bed, “pietra serena” fireplace and ensuite bathroom with shower;
- The Powder blue bedroom with three twin beds and Empire period furniture.
On the ground floor there is an additional bathroom with tub and shower head.

First floor:

- A hall with Tuscan renaissance furniture and a vintage Italian carpet (from the Fifties) leads onto the Mauve bedroom with art deco furniture and Queen size bed.
- A small office is accessible through the hall.
- The Red bedroom (Queen bed), with its Tuscan 19th century furniture and ensuite bathroom with shower, is connected to the small office.
- A corridor leads to the Green bedroom, furnished with 19th century precious pieces and Richard Ginori lamps, as well as a brass Queen size bed, with ensuite bathroom and shower.
- The Taupe bedroom features vintage Italian furniture, Richard Ginori bed lamp and two single wrought iron beds.
In total there are four bathrooms on the first floor: three with shower stalls and one with tub and shower head (to take a standing shower).

Lower floor:

Through the ground floor’s covered veranda, a large pool (billiard) room can be reached descending a staircase. A rare 19th century piece billiard table is on display in this Fifties style designed living room with 17 ft. high ceilings. The pool cues are all wooden vintage. The two areas of the pool room are decorated with antique furniture, comfortable sofas and vintage rattan armchairs. A collection of old brass wind instruments hangs on the room’s stone walls. There is also a small bar area with spirits storage.
The room also boasts three full height picture windows which give the space a sense of continuity with the outdoor garden and provide an impressive view as far as the eye can see…

Our stay at Somavilla exceeded our expectations. The property is stunning, and immersed in fascinating history. The house felt like a home, with all of the amenities we needed and more. The location was stunning, with just a short trip to the local town and multiple vineyards and super close to Siena and Fiorenze for day trips. We cannot recommend this place enough.

Our family of seven adults plus one infant loved our stay in this charming villa. Even with the high temperatures of July we were able to find cooler and shaded areas throughout the property to enjoy the stunning views morning, noon, and night. This place had enough modern amenities to keep us comfortable while also providing the unique character we were looking for with our stay in the Chianti region. Some family favorites included using the pool, playing on the pool table downstairs, and hiring a chef recommended by the owner for an unforgettable final evening of our stay. Stefano's communication before and during the stay was so helpful and we hope to find ourselves staying here again in the future.

If you really want to know what it is like to live in Tuscany, this is the villa for you. The descriptions on the listing are accurate but do not tell the entire story. You feel completely at home - the Villa is charming and the surrounding vineyards and olive trees complete the beautiful landscape. The lovely town of Castellina is a short distance away and all the villages you might want to visit, including Siena and San Gimignano, are an easy drive. You can completely relax here, so much so that some days we didn't want to leave. Stefano, the owner, and his staff were easy to work with, always available and completely responsive to whatever we needed (Including giving us fresh eggs one day when we ran out). There is a housekeeper and maintenance worker that live on the property but we never saw them unless we called them for something. The Villa has been in Stefano's family for 4 generations and if you get the chance, definitely plan to visit with him. He is a really interesting guy and more than willing to share the history of the property and show you the hidden areas you might overlook - the lovely chapel on the property, the underground wine cellar and the secret room in the basement. We have stayed at luxury resorts in Tuscany before but now we feel like we've seen the real Tuscany.

We stayed at Sommavilla for a week in October 2022, accompanied by our two post-college age children and four of their friends. It was an absolutely magical experience. The location is unimaginably beautiful; as far as the eye can see, there is nothing but olive groves, vineyards and forested hills. The 16th century house is set in lushly landscaped grounds, with a beautiful pool, stone paths leading to smaller gardens, and intimate seating areas for coffee or a meal. The home also has two patios, so you can basically be outdoors all of the time. Inside, the house is authentic to its period, with tiled stone floors, carved wood chests and other antique furniture, large fireplaces in most rooms (though decorative only, as municipals laws restrict use to wintertime), and a huge, fascinating display of Chianti wines. The kitchen is fully equipped, though the appliances are not modern. There are enough bedrooms for many guests, each with a different color and character. Everyone in our group loved their rooms. Sommavilla excels in authenticity and charm; conversely, travelers should not expect the modern furnishings or amenities of a luxury hotel. The home’s location is a huge plus: it is just a couple of miles to the enchanting town of Castellina in Chianti, which has many excellent restaurants, bakeries, and a Coop grocery store. We regularly did early-morning cappuccino and pastry runs, and after long days of adventure, we lingered over sumptuous meals at the local restaurants. Sommavilla’s location provides an excellent base for exploring Chianti, Siena, San Gimignano and other adjacent areas in Tuscany. We also biked on 5 days through spectacular countryside and picture-perfect Tuscan towns, using local shops that provide e-bikes (it’s very hilly, so think twice before renting a regular bike!), fabulous downloadable routes and, if desired, guides. There is a reason this part of Tuscany is such a popular destination. Stefano is a most warm and gracious host. We really enjoyed our conversations with him, he was always responsive to questions, and he gave great restaurant advice. Luckily he was available one night to join us for dinner in Castellina, as he is a most engaging dinner partner. We would go back to stay at Sommavilla in a heartbeat for all the above reasons.

We secured this reservation almost 3 years ago, but, because of COVID, postponed it twice until we decided we were coming this year come hell or high water. Stefano was very gracious in allowing us to defer until we felt safe traveling. I can’t imagine a more perfect location. Castellina in Chianti is a very nice little village with lots of great spots to eat, drink, stroll and people watch without all the crowds of the more well known towns. It was also centrally located so that we could drive to Siena, Greve, San Giminagno, even Florence if we chose. We had a rental car, which I recommend, but you have to enjoy driving hilly roads with lots of switchbacks. I found it exhilarating, but it’s not for the faint of heart. There is a beautiful pool with breathtaking views. As beautiful as the villa is, it does show its age a little, which is the only reason it didn’t get 5 stars across the board. It’s not the Ritz, but if you’re okay with shabby chic, it’s very nice. The furniture is a little worn and tired, but comfortable. This was written by a guy. The women in our group would not have been so kind. We left with fantastic memories. I hope this helps.

A beautiful house with so much character with amazing views! We loved sitting on the veranda, it was a beautiful atmosphere and as long as the weather was good, we had our meals there. It was plenty of space for 9 of us. The town is only a few minute drive and has restaurants, shops, gelato, and a grocery store. Everyone is very helpful and friendly. We hired the recommended chef for a dinner and it was wonderful! If you plan to leave the house, rental cars or a daily car service is a must. It's worth driving around exploring all the towns in the area. The driveway is steep and a little intimidating, but our cars handled it fine, even in rainy weather. It was a lovely stay and would recommend it to everyone!

Our family of 13 (7 adults and 6 children, ages 5-15) spent a week at this beautiful Villa and we all loved it! It was the perfect place for a week of relaxation with a few planned activities after days in Rome and Venice. Stefano was very responsive and Josefa and her husband took care of all our needs in a very timely manner. We are all cooks and as my daughter said, the kitchen was a cook's dream! It was so well appointed that we cooked in most nights. The children even prepared dinner one evening! I can't say enough about the villa with all its amenities, the billiard room, the pool and all the common areas indoors and outside. The grounds were lovely as well! Also, we have stayed in quite a few Vrbo's and I have never seen a guest information book that was so comprehensive! It was a vacation we will never forget! Thank you!!

We took our kids and grandkids, 10 in all, to spend a week in Italy, planning to spend the entire time in Tuscany. This was a fantastic place for us. The home, an ancient villa beautifully maintained and very rustic, worked perfectly for us. We were able to venture out easily from there, but also to stay home and enjoy an amazing, huge pool on the hot days as Europe was in the grip of a heat wave during our stay. The town of Castellina in Chianti was only minutes away and had some good restaurants. Stefano was only a text away if we had any questions and the caretaker Josefina was wonderful to us. We had her prepare a Tuscan meal for us on our first night that was excellent, and we had leftovers to snack on for the rest of the week. Sommavilla met and exceeded all of our expectations.
