This cozy cottage was everything you’d want In a vacation rental in the UP. It’s private, quiet, short drive away from great hikes. The home has so much charm, character & warmth. You can tell it’s well taken care of & well built. It was also clean to perfection. You can sit by the fire downstairs or on the closed in porch over looking the lake sipping coffee for a perfect start to the day. Would definitely go back! The only slight drawback was the WiFi connection wasn’t the best but I’m a millennial sooo I’m addicted to my phone.
We always enjoy our week at McKenzie Bay! The only thing we'd change is to stay longer next time. Thank you for your hospitality.
This home is a wonderful getaway with a beautiful view and immediate peace and serenity when you step foot in the backyard!! It is quiet, secluded and so peaceful, and our dog loved having so much yard to explore! The little bay that the house overlooks is surrounded by trees (we went in the early fall and the colors were stunning!), and we saw birds and eagles all weekend. The stars were spectacular, and the fire pit was perfect at night, firewood provided by the hosts. The house was clean, the kitchen was well-stocked for cooking, and the checkin and checkout processes were very easy. The hosts came to harvest from their vegetable gardens 1-2 times a day, but were very friendly when visiting. Overall, we had a wonderful stay!
Enjoyed our three days
First off, if you are looking for a quiet setting to kick back and relax in northern Michigan, look no further. The first thing that strikes you is the lake view. So tranquil. Next, is the fact this home is spotless. It comes equipped with everything you could need including a vast variety of spices so you can make meals at the cottage. Everything thing was in order and made for a delightful stay. If you are coming up, be sure to get groceries at the Meijer in Marquette. Although there is a small store in town, its very limited and horribly expensive. You cannot go wrong with this rental.
We had an amazing stay at McKenzie Bay Retreat!!! Gorgeous family home on absolutely beautiful property!!! We felt at home as soon as we arrived!!! The home is so full of history and you can feel the love that has been such a huge part of this home!! I can only imagine what a magical experience it must have been to grow up here!!! We will absolutely be back again!!! Thank you for sharing your family home with us!!!!
Pros: This place is an incredibly clean, much-loved cabin. The walls are decorated with the lives of people who died there after 69 years of marriage. It is very clean and check-in and check-out was a breeze. What a beautiful place to retire. The paddle boat is there, alongside a garden, a lake, beautiful animals, a nice backyard. We saw deer, a coyote, and a bear while at the cabin. Hiking was awesome and the local town is just a mile away. There are board games for the evenings and free internet. Cons: Hardly any! It was really great. I'm not sure where 8 people would sleep; there are beds for 5. If you are squeamish about dead animals, this is not the place for you -- it's a hunting lodge, with about 20 dead animals nailed to the walls. If you're a hunter, this may be ideal. The lake is beautiful and the kitchen was well stocked with cookware, silverware, everything you need. A wonderful place for a getaway in the woods!
Louise and Darlene were great hosts! We loved the cabin and all its history. My daughter spent hours bird watching in the four seasons room. My son loved catching frogs, fishing and playing cards. We spent the week checking out waterfalls near Big Bay and traveled into Marquette several times. It is a quick drive. So much to see and do. Look forward to visiting again.
This was our second stay at McKenzie Bay and we love it here. Highly recommend. Beautiful property, fun fishing on the lake and the house is very nice and has plenty of room. Only complaint, which wasn't really a factor for us, is that the wifi drops constantly and is very slow. If you were trying to work online or anything, it might not work out very well. But don't come up here to work or use the internet, get outside. It's gorgeous.
We had been looking for a vacation rental as we were specifically coming for the UP 200. The previous house we rented was booked as were most other places. We were disappointed and surprised to find this listing. We were somewhat hesitant about booking but sure was happy we did! The home was just that. A home! Very comfortable, clean and cozy. Will definitely come back! Thank you for having us!
