When planning your vacation, if you private message us, we can help you find the resources you need to make the most of your time at the “Top of the Mitten.” The area of Lower Pennisula Michigan generally considered North of Grayling. A guidebook and reference material is also located in the home, helping you discover many of the local amenities.
Onsite amenities include; Local Coffee, basic spices, all towels, limited snacks, bottled water (refillable water bottles in the fridge to take places), as well as contact information for local points of interest. We want you to make the most of your opportunity to enjoy the Inland Waterway System and surrounding areas.
The Inland Waterway was one of the main transportation routes for the Indigenous cultures of Northern Michigan. It became a primary route for the early logging industry before the iron rails came north from Detroit and Chicago. "Booms" of logs were floated from Crooked Lake through the Indian River to Cheboygan. According to the “Pageant of Tuscarora” (available onsite to read), the logs would be so thick the lumber workers responsible for moving them known as “River Rats” could walk the entire river.
The roaring '20s formed the apex of the first tourism boom for the Inland waterways. The end of the victorian age until the 1930s saw single and double-decker steamers like the "Oden" and the "Topinabee" touring high society from many of the Cosmopolitan Cities in the Midwest. The area was filled with many posh resorts including the Pinehurst Inn(now a true dive bar) hosting America's high society and politicians. The Pinehurst’s old guestbooks have names of Senators and Representatives of the day who lodged here during their tours.
Today, you have a better chance of running into “Alvis” instead of a US Senator at the Pinehurst. Even so, the Indian River and Inland Lakes chain offers some of the most amazing recreational watersports experiences in the world. Bring your own toys, or talk to the marinas about renting during your stay. If boating isn’t in your itinerary, the area offers many other choices.
The "Top of the Mitten" offers a taste of everything the great State of Michigan has to offer. 4 seasons outside recreation activities: Hiking, Biking, Motorized Trail Riding, fishing, hunting, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, Snowmobiling, alpine and nordic skiing. Also close proximity to two Great Lakes, Petoskey, Mackinac Straights area, and many points of interest. Great food and local shops, or just unplug and relax. The Indian River or "Exit 310" is one of the greatest destinations to enjoy your UpNorthVacation.
House was great for the five of us and our little dog. Only stayed one night but the house from great and had everything we needed. Very clean.
We enjoyed the nice clean, spacious house!!
The home was comfortable and well provisioned!
Overall the house was clean, except for the spiderwebs and dust webs in corners. There were plenty of towels and they even had choices of bathroom supplies examples: shampoo&conditioners soap, etc. In the advertisement for the house it stated that there was air conditioning. This was not central air but units in each room(not window units) that had been put away before we arrived. We were told to open windows if we needed to cool it down inside the house. My family is one that likes it to be cold when we sleep so we had the windows open and fans going at night. This wouldn't have been bad except that there was a sewer smell that came in through the windows. I did not report this issue because I felt by the time we realized this was an issue there wouldn't have been any time for them to fix it(we only stayed 3 nights.) And I am not sure what they could have done to fix it since they had already taken out the air conditioning units.
great property to stay very accommodating for our fishing trip. Had everything we needed for all 7 of us and our trucks and boats.
Everything was great, except the streaming service. The upstairs TV didn't want to work right. I got to watch it justv1 night.
Spacious, clean, and fully stocked with kitchen needs and bed/bath linens. Beds are very comfortable and friendly community! Would definitely stay again in the future.
Stayed here with my entire family and it was very spacious! The house is well kept and clean! Very generous to have small toiletries available if we happened to forget anything. Perfect for our large family and long weekend! We enjoyed hanging out at the house playing games together at the large table. Super easy and smooth communication with owners! Everyone really enjoyed our stay here we will be back! Also did I mention how clean it was?! ;)
Had a terrific stay in Indian Rivver at this property. Walking fistance to both downtown and the beach made life easy and simple. The hiuse itself is very nice. Plenty of room and beds to fit everyone. It has a large kitchen, large living room, bonfire pit out back. The owner / property manager were very easy to communicate with. Would definitely stay here again. I recomend for anyone looking for a stay in Indian River.
The property was clean, kitchen well stocked. We used the propane grill to cook one of our meals, so that was a nice touch. The downstairs shower is small, but still workable. Overall we were very happy and would stay again!
Had a great time at your rental. Would definitely recommend this place.
Excellent place to stay! Very clean, well stocked, responsive hosts - great big front porch!. We had a great time! If only it wasn't so close to the bar...quite a bit of noise at closing time. Otherwise fantastic!
Very nice location and property has everything one may need!
. We enjoyed staying in the house . The kids loved their own beds ! No air but did have room airs which was sufficient for most rooms ! Kids loved the trampoline too!
This home is in a perfect location. The house has so much to offer. The property owners were wonderful to deal with. I highly suggest staying here! Thank you for sharing your home with my family!
We really enjoyed our stay, the house was very clean and nicely organized! We were within walking distance of restaurants and down town. We were in town for a SxS ride and were able to ride from the house to the trailhead. We will definitely be back!
Just stayed at this house 2nd year in a row and it was just as good as the first time.
House was nice with lots of room and beds. The owner was very responsive and helpful. 10/10 will stay again!
Perfect place for us to stay for skiing!
When we rented this home for the weekend we were looking for something inexpensive but still nice and cozy. It was all of the above. We weren’t sure how many family members would be with us as this was an unexpected family event. This house was perfect for all of us including the exploring 1 year old. Plenty of crawl space with lots of supervision!! (We blocked the staircase with the comfy footstool!) Since we only planned on being there for 2 nights we had plenty to do and the location in Indian River is close to several other small towns. We even found time to go to the Christmas Parade in Cheboygan. I’d love to plan our next trip ahead of time and when it’s warm out so we can explore more and go to the beaches and Mackinaw Island!
We really enjoyed staying at the Indian River inland waterway house. It is comfortable, spacious, has everything we need including a big, well-equipped kitchen. On top of that, we saw a lot of birds (we're a group of bird hunters) and found some new places in the town. We'll be back.
Everything was as it should be. Great ace to stay. Had Everything we needed.
Very comfy and cozy place. They had everything we needed for cooking. I would definitely stay here again.
A great, clean house with plenty of room to spread out. Well equipped kitchen and the laundry was a nice bonus. Excellent location close to the state park and other attractions. The host responded right away to the one or two questions we had. Definitely recommended if in the area.
Very nice house. The town is small but a good grocery and dinner are close by. Access to beach areas in multiple spots made for pleasant afternoons. Up North in Michigan is not meant to be perfect. There may be a few feet of rocks getting to soft sand on the beach. Yes, a local bar is close by (which might be called a bonus...). These aspects are just part of the relaxing charm of fresh water lakes or a slower pace of living in a rural cottage village.
the property was clean and exactly the way the pictures showed. had plenty of amidite's to house everyone no matter the weather.
