North Haven, Maine
**This is a Memorial Day Weekend through mid-October rental only. The house is not winterized. Get in touch early, as the summer is a busy time on North Haven and it’s best to book well in advance.
North Haven is an island in Penobscot Bay and a beautiful, 12-mile ferry ride overlooking the Camden Hills. It is best to get a car reservation 30 days in advance through the Maine Department of Transportation.
Our cottage is a simple 4-bedroom, 1 bath house on a saltmarsh within a very short walking distance to beach. This is a working harbor with several lobster boats but the beach is semi-private. The water is clear and clean to the bottom but not for the faint of heart! We have 2 kayaks available, liability waiver required in advance. The back deck overlooks the marsh, Bartlett’s Harbor, and endless bird life. Some nights the gorgeous, old windjammers anchor in the harbor and you are awakened by their 8 o’clock bell in the morning! At night you will hear crickets and waves lapping, and you can lie or sit on the porch under a blanket as we did as children and count shooting stars in the vibrant Milky Way.
We have all the kitchen amenities as the kitchen was newly renovated in 2022 and includes a dishwasher. There is a washer and dryer. Wi-Fi, Roku TV, or a game closet for those who want to unplug. You can even play Corn Hole or Horseshoes on the side lawn.
The island has several organic farms with a Saturday farmer’s market, 3 restaurants – one fancy, one luncheon type, and one with amazing pizza, and our very own micro-brewery where you can buy ‘growlers’ and refill them! There is also a gift shop, galleries, and The Waterman Community Center which has a theater and a coffee bar. The nine-hole golf course was voted one of the 50 most beautiful in the world by Sports Illustrated. There are several public beaches great for picnics. Lobster is easily available from several sources.
Our family has gone to North Haven every summer since 1958. If you are looking for a fancy, resort-like vacation, this is not for you. You are in the country and in a simple, country home. But if you need to get away and breathe the purest of air, this is it!
** This is a classic Maine vacation rental and is not a suitable option for physical disabilities or impairments that involve climbing antique, steep stairs. Also, our bathroom is on the ground floor and bedrooms are on the second floor. Would prefer no more than 6 people.
good weather. great location. near our friends.
My family and I stayed at Laura's house for 3 weeks this summer and had a great experience. The house had everything we needed, and Laura was very welcoming and responsive over text. Our kids enjoyed playing at the beach in Bartlett's Harbor almost every day. We also loved driving over to Narrow Place Beach, and going to Turner Farm for coffee, egg sandwiches, and fresh vegetables and meat. We love North Haven and Willmarsh, and plan to return next summer.
My family spent a week at the Sea Rose and had a relaxing, wonderful time! We loved having access to the water for beach adventures. The host was incredibly responsive and ensured we had an enjoyable stay. We’ve stayed here two summers in a row and look forward to more adventures!
Laura was a great host and exceptionally organized. She was easy to reach and answered all of our questions in a timely manner. The property description is accurate. It is a beautiful house close to a small beach that our kids loved. The house is well-equipped with all of the basic necessities. Would recommend, especially to families with small children.
We returned to the Sea Rose for a second year and had another wonderful experience on North Haven. The house is charming and well-furnished, and the deck, beach access, and kayaks are all much-appreciated amenities. We would love to keep coming back!
We were very happy to spend a week at the Sea Rose Cottage. Beautiful home with everything we could need. Loved how friendly everyone on the Island was. Loved the peace and quiet.Among our favorite things to do was a visit to Turner Farm, mornings for coffee and egg sandwiches and afternoons for ice cream!
We had a great stay!! It was perfect for our family!!!
Well our vacation was a bit of a bummer, but NOT because of the vrbo or host. The weather wasn't great and when it turned better, we found out my family member had covid. With some scrambling, we sadly left a little early. Laura's home was very well stocked and the deck was great. There was a little more traffic in the area than I expected, but it wasn't too bad. Our dogs enjoyed the trip the most! Laura was also very understanding of the covid situation, as we did out best to clean and sanitize for her.
My family of 4 (kids ages 7 and 9) stayed here for a week. We had an amazing, relaxing time. The people on the island were incredibly friendly, so much so that they all wave to each other when driving/walking by, even to the tourists like us! We took a bunch of small day hikes (the host left a nice map for us with highlights of the island) and spent a lot of time by the water. The semi-private beach is very pebbly (not a problem for us) and was home to working fishermen, so it had an industrial feel. But the water was crystal clear and clean, and if you enjoy the cold water, it is fun to swim in! The best spot in the house was the porch, and the host was kind enough to get us a huge umbrella so I spent many hours on the deck, in the shade, reading and watching all the hummingbirds in the marsh. The kitchen was amazing to cook in, but bring as much food as you can as the island grocery store has very slim pickings, and the farm stands had limited hours. The restaurant (calderwood) was great for family pizza dinners, and we even caught a show at the community center that featured a talented string quartet/reading of a children's book and performance. The only downside to the house was the master queen size bed was extremely mushy/soft (to some this may be comfortable, but it was tough for me to sleep in.) And the only thing missing in the house is a nightlight to help aid with nighttime trips to the 1st floor bathroom. But overall, a very special place, and a very kind and accomodating host. Thanks for sharing your house with us!
The whole family loved our stay! The house has lots of Maine charm and is very peaceful. We love North Haven!
Lovely house with plenty of space and amenities for our family of 5.
Great spot on the island. Laura's house was the perfect landing spot after playing in the ocean all day.
We spent a wonderful week at The Sea Rose. The location couldn't have been better and the private beach space was a true highlight! I highly recommend staying here.
This is a charming house in a stellar location -- just a few minutes from a small harbor, beautiful walks in every direction. The kitchen is bright and cheerful and fantastically well equipped. A few small improvements would make a huge difference: please, some shades or blinds or something on the windows so that the upstairs can be protected from the hot summer sun! It is impossible to do anything to keep the upstairs (or downstairs) cool during the day, and though it does cool off after a time at night, being able to prevent it heating up so much in the first place would make things a lot more comfortable. In the same vein, some sort of shade on the otherwise BEAUTIFUL deck with its beautiful views. It is too hot and sunny for most people to sit out there on a hot day. A simple umbrella, or a sunshade of any kind would be great. We loved our stay otherwise!
Very comfortable house with great deck and view of water. New, well-equipped kitchen with plenty of space for six people.
