Late on a summer day you watched as the shaded green hues of evening drew their veil over the valley and the setting sun highlighted distant Celo Knob. You could hear the bullfrog call to the fireflies down by the pond where the old mare had, after a last long drink, headed for a barn far off. With the windows open you had to draw the covers up to your chin during the night. In the morning you wandered down to the rivers edge with your cup of coffee in hand. As you approached, the trout scattered. Puppy couldn't resist the temptation and got thoroughly wet. The mist on the river began to burn off as the sun climbed higher in the sky. No TV tonight, instead you'll have bonfire down by the river. In no hurry, you ambled back up the driveway past acres of summer blooms and lawn, thinking "I'm glad I don't have to mow". Instead, you spent the afternoon floating in an old inner-tube down the river all the way to Patience Park, someone was there to meet you and give you a ride home.
Just a few miles south of the cabin is the Mt Mitchell Golf Course, rated 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest, and voted #1 semi-private course in the region by the readers of the Asheville Citizen Times. Also right next to the Golf Course, than a half mile further away is the trail head into the Pisgah National forest, a trail that leads up to the Roaring Fork waterfall, one of the regions prettiest falls, and one of the easiest to hike to, only a half mile of old forest roadway. Mt Mitchell can be reached from the cabin by automobile in less than 15 minutes.

Very comfortable place with a great view of the mountains!
My husband and I visit the NC Mountains after each of his doctor visits at UNC Chapel Hill. We always find different locations and rentals in the Spruce Pine, Banner Elk, and Little Switzerland areas. This particular location in Burnsville did not disappoint. My husband enjoyed some fly fishing in the South Toe River, while I enjoyed my photography capturing the amazing scenery. The Overlook home was neatly kept and quite comfortable. I wish we could have stayed longer, but circumstances required that we end our stay sooner than expected. It just makes us want to return!
IEntering the cabin felt like walking into a good friend's or family's house! Location was secluded and fall foilage was gorgeous, cabin & location so beautiful we only left twice, once for groceries and another to have breakfast at pigs & grits (highly recommend) and do some shopping. Beds were comfy, all linens were clean, fireplace (wood burning stove) was great. ALL pictures accurately showed property, kitchen well equipped AND night lights were placed throughout cabin a very thoughtful perk as I had brought my own!EXACTLY what we were looking for to de-compress after hurricane Ian left our island in SW Fl devasted and we also were able to finally celebrate 42nd anniversary. Drove to end of driveway and fished on owners private land. I could go on & on...if you like a peaceful, quiet and not too secluded this is the cabin for you!
The property was incredible. It was very secluded and had an amazing view from the side porch. The river front part of the property was beautiful. I plan on coming back during the summer to enjoy the river more.
Peaceful retreat enjoyed our time very much Serenity beautiful and captured photographical images of landscape. Enjoy the meadow and landscaping and serene atmosphere.
Beautiful property with a nice downtown area and great dining within twenty minutes in any direction, will definitely be back!
Privacy excellent, view marvelous, travel to city and key sight seeing wonderful. Friendly community and home provided numerous areas where all family members could relax and enjoy theirselves without being in each other’s personal space zone which is a must with group table for interaction and jacuzzi.
A hidden treasure— private and perfect for true mountain lovers.
So grateful to get to spend time at this magical place again! I definitely bombarded the property owner with questions this year (sorry about that) but he was quick to reply and super helpful. We loved eating all of our meals out on the porch looking out at the mountains, and spending all the time we could down by the river. It was warm enough to swim in this year! My daughter also really enjoyed the hot tub. We finally went to go see some waterfalls too, and they did not disappoint! Thank you for another wonderful trip!
This property has natural beauty, seclusion, and all the comforts of home. Absolutely perfect getaway.
Our stay was wonderful. It was the perfect getaway. Loved the deer in the morning and the hot tub at night.
The location of the Overlook is priceless. We loved being able to sip coffee outside seeing all the fall colors on the mountain. It's peaceful, relaxing and just perfect. The hot tub was a treat nightly after hiking to waterfalls. We cooked dinners at the property, and enjoyed the fully stocked kitchen very much. Waterfalls are a short, beautiful 20 minute drive in any direction. We loved our stay here very much and everything was easy.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Overlook! I could not have asked for a more beautiful, peaceful week off the grid!
This was our second summer staying here, this time we splurged and stayed for three weeks. My favorite part is the swimming hole, there really isn't a better spot on the river for swimming, with a large deep area, big enough for laps. But there is also a nice sandy beach and plenty of shallow areas by the shore where small kids can play and wade. The view from the porch (and hot tub) is amazing, and we really enjoyed just watching the mountain- its appearance seems to change constantly with the movement of the sun and clouds. And the house has a great kitchen, well-equipped with high-end stove/oven, dishwasher, everything you need to make delicious food.
Me and my wife stayed here for our 40 anniversary the so-called private swimming hole that you describe was not private at all it was a very long walk down the driveway and crossed the main Paved road to get to it to find out that there are other people already there. Upon arrival we walked into the house and it smelled really musky and the bed's did not sleep very well also tried to call the manager several times and never did get a response or call back. If I could give this place a review less than one I would
Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise with us- everything was wonderful!
Cool older house, great view of the black mountains. Great place to fish and swim, although I did see a bear while fishing one day. Will definitely try to book again in the future.
We love the area and have been visiting for quite some time. The overlook is one of the best places we’ve stayed in the past 10 years. If you like a beautiful view AND river access then this is the spot for you! Halls chapel road is quiet and I enjoy cycling on it as well. Hope to be back soon!
I skim places on VRBO from time to time just to see if there is anything even close to being as amazing as this place---there isn't. This was our second time at the Overlook and I have nothing but wonderful things to say. Keeping in mind, of course, this is not a 5 star hotel with maids and a wait staff, it is a secluded home in the moutains on the river. We welcome the little critters that come to visit (bees, butterflies, spiders, skinks, fence lizards, snakes, hummingbirds, eagle, towhee, cardinals... etc) and if we stay at a time when it is a *little* overgrown (SO beneficial for the pollinators, by the way, but I'd never call it overgrown I just saw it in another review) there are even more skinks and lizards which is AWESOME and so enjoyable. The home itself is gorgeous and completely stocked with everything you need. And THE VIEWS, my goodness. There is really no place I would rather be. My daughter cried when we left because she did not want to go back home, she wanted to go back to the river and hike in the mountains. THANK YOU again for another great trip
