If you are looking for a quiet, waterfront place to stay, than this Sugar Island house, referred to as the 'Sugar Suite', is just what you are looking for! Plus, from the middle of May until the middle of September, there is a small pontoon boat for your use (Maximum 6 people at a time)!
The Sugar Suite is a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, ranch-style home on the Northeast side of the St. Mary's River (the mouth of Lake George). It is the perfect spot for boating, swimming (BUT, remember... werelocated in the North, so the water temps are not like Southern Water ways.), fishing (great water depths) or even duck hunting! It is also close enough to the mainland (about 10.5 miles from the car ferry), that a day trip to the Historic Sault Ste. Marie as a 'fudgie' is always possible! In the Sault, you can visit the shops on Portage Avenue (Or 'Fudgie Lane', which is where tourists get the 'fudgie' name from, because they are known for purchasing a lot of fudge!'), the famous Soo Locks, the Tower of History, Valley Camp, the Kewadin Casino, or one of the few golf courses in town. There are also other amazing attractions within 60 miles of the ferry dock.
The property features waterfront, where you can find a fire pit, charcoal grill, and picnic table for your use! The most traffic you'll see from this location, is on the water!
As you walk into this house, you will enter through an entry way with a washer and dryer for your use. The kitchen features an electric stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and toaster. Pots, pans, dishes and utensils provide everything but the food you need to prepare your meals.
The dining room features a dining room table with 6 chairs and a tall top table with 2 stools, views toward the back of the house (where you park) and toward the front of the house (through the large picture window facing the water).
The living room has a couch, an oversized chair with an ottoman, and the large picture window with water views.
The master bedroom has a King bed, small dresser, a lamp and a hanging rack..
The 2nd bedroom has 2 queen beds, a closet with hanging racks, a night stand, and a full size mirror attached to the door.
The 3rd bedroom has a King, a night stand, a lamp, and a closet with hanging racks.
Do you want to bring your boat You are more than welcome! In fact, there is a DNR boat launch about a mile from this location, so putting it in the water once arrive at the Sugar Suite will not be an issue and we have plenty of room for you park your trailer! OR, use our Pontoon boat! We have an older Pontoon boat that is available for your use (holds up to 1000 lbs)! If you plan to use the Pontoon boat, please bring life jackets (all children 6 and Under must be wearing their life jackets at all times - US Coast Guard regulation). We make sure the pontoon boat is full of gas for your arrival, and expect it full when you leave ($100 charge if the boat is less than full).
We'll provide all of the linens, but would appreciate it if you could bring your own beach towels and paper products.
If you possess your Michigan Fishing License, than you can not only use your own boat, or the pontoon boat for fishing but you also have the option of biking a charter fishing trip just 3 docks down (Blue Heron Fishing Charter). Let us know if you are interested and we'll help you reserve your trip with the captain next door.
Other than that, we welcome your dog(s), but there is an additional $200 fee per animal.
We have a small fish cleaning station set up for your use.
Please, let us know if you have any questions! We'll do our best to accommodate special requests!

House was very roomy an expectation was fulfilledWe were there for a two night stay but would love to return. My mother was born on Sugar Island and it’s the first time I’ve been back there in 40 years forgot how rural it really is.

Beautiful location. Love the pontoon that comes with the rental. Spent more time on the water than in the home.

Everything was excellent as it has been every year, we have stayed here. Clean, comfortable, beautiful setting and peaceful. The fishing was not as good as normal, but we had a great time anyway, as usual.

Our family had a wonderful week. The weather was beautiful, and sitting on the back deck watching the boats go by was very peaceful. The house was clean, with plenty of household goods to take care of our family of five. We had a couple of snags while we were there, but Laurie was quick to make things right. If you're looking for a peaceful vacation spot, this is that place.

There was a LOT going on around us. We saw eagles constantly. My wife told me she saw a beaver swim within 3 ft. of the pier. I just knew she was wrong and this was going to end up being a muskrat, but no! It was an actual beaver. This dude was a common occurrence all week! We saw loons, various kinds of ducks, blue herons, and sandhill cranes. These HUGE fish would jump clear out of the water and sound like kids jumping in when they came crashing back into the river. I couldn’t catch them to save my life, but they were in there. I would highly recommend getting a guide (early) if you plan to fish. I wish I had. I did manage one decent sized pike, but the river and lake can be a challenge to identify good spots. Make your life easier and get a guide.Want to kayak? Check out Birds Eye Outfitters. Ken set us up and even delivered them to us on Sugar Island. A bonus for us: There was a wonderful dog that would come visit us. His name is Rusty and he is AWESOME at fetch. He does have a bit of an issue chasing a moving car, but if you happen to see him, he couldn’t be nicer. Find a stick and toss it for him. We lost our dog April 2nd or he would have been there with us, so you can see why Rusty was so welcome. I am pretty sure his house was two lots west from the lake house.Laurie was very responsive when we had a slight snafu during our stay. Just a small issue with a part that needed replacement from normal wear and tear.

The highlight was the use of the pontoon and being on the water. Unfortunately, the cabin wasn’t ready for us as we were forgotten. It was very spacious and well stocked. The cabin is in need of some TLC as well as the stairway leading to the dock. There was also some bad odour in the cabin. Overall, we enjoyed our stay but I feel it was overpriced.

Sugar Suite is a beautiful property. Not too far away from Sault St Marie. Very clean and comfy house. Boat was as advertise but it did the trick for my angler husband and kids. Check-in was easy and getting a hold of Laurie was super easy and got a quick response. Would recommend and stay again.

Great back to nature and a simpler life … not in a backwoods cabin, but a clean and comfy 3 bedroom 2 bath home.

There's not much to do on sugar island other than enjoy time with each other. Cook a bunch of food and enjoy the peace and quiet. Have a campfire and if that makes you happy. This is the perfect stay. We love it at the sugar suite.

Clean, loved being on the water! Communication with Lori was excellent! Island lost power our last night there, so we had to leave dirty dishes, but she was very understanding. This place was so relaxing. The only complaint we had was the gas grill wasn't working, but owner was not aware, hopefully this is fixed, especially if power goes out.

We have stayed here several times and had a wonderful experience each time. The accommodations fit our group and Laurie is always a gracious host. There is a good docking spot for our boat and the launch is nearby. We plan on returning again next year!

The property was as advertised. I would definitely recommend this place to stay if your looking to be off the grid. There is plenty of near gift shops in downtown.

The house was fine and clean. Area was remote. But the ad clearly states that the house had air conditioning. When we arrived there was no outside condenser or air ducts, only base board heat and a few broken fans. The boat that was advertised was not the one pictured it was more of a floating dock with no seats. The property was adequate but I felt like we were lied to from the beginning.

The property was nice. No air conditioning. The ferry to the island was quite convenient, reasonably priced and an overall positive unique experience.

Love the view from the cottage of the St. Mary’s River. We stayed in Michigan and gazed at Canada. Comfortable three bedrooms and well stocked kitchen. We have stayed here for many years and hope to continue.
