Welcome to Hale Kea (the White House). A whimsical Vintage Hawaii Style home with private pool & stunning ocean views for fantastic whale watching and star gazing. The home boasts two master suites and a private Ohana with two additional rooms. lush greenery, abundant tropical flowers and exceptional privacy, this home enjoys stunning views of Kauna'oa Bay and Maui, with front-row seats to the island's dazzling sunsets. The outdoor garden features a just-completed (October 2020) 40' lava-rimmed pool with a large tanning ledge, a large spa, new outdoor lava shower and a covered lanai with its own elegant changing and powder room.

The Mauna Kea Resort was the first world-class resort developed on the Kohala Coast, the site selected by Laurence Rockefeller because of its perfect natural white-sand crescent beach and its ideal year-round sunny climate. In his opinion, other resort locations simply did not compare.

This architecturally significant residence features locally handcrafted sustainable wood, reclaimed teak and modern European furnishings. Terrazzo Italian Carrera slab marble and imported glass tile are used extensively. Furnishings include works by contemporary and mid-century masters such as Eames, Phillipe Starck, Marcel Wanders, Verner Panton and Le Corbusier.

Hale Kea offers a friendly open-space floor plan with huge sliding-glass doors that open every room of the house to the beautiful, private outdoor setting and gentle ocean breezes. The kitchen is equipped with Viking appliances, white-marble counters, a small wine cellar, coffee and classic model Nespresso machine (please bring your own Nespresso pods) and water purification system. Should you need a break from ocean-gazing, the living room features a large wall-mounted TV (Full gold cable package), Netflix, Amazon, and even a DVD player providing many entertainment options. The home includes a Sonos sound system with speakers throughout the main living area and lanai.

Several indoor and outdoor dining options are available, situated to maximize the incredible views. Other amenities include a washer & dryer, a selection of books, complimentary WIFI access throughout the property and air-conditioning in every bedroom. The main living area (living room, dining room & kitchen) is designed to enjoy Hawaii's wonderful ocean breezes with ceiling fans and large screened sliding doors but is not air-conditioned.

There are two bedrooms in the main house, each with a king bed, private bathroom and air-conditioning. The detached Hale I'i (guest house) includes two bedrooms, each with a queen-size bed, and an attached Jack & Jill bathroom. Beds are dressed in luxurious linens. Bathrooms do not have tubs, but each has a large rain shower, robes and 5-star toiletries.

Guests of Hale Kea may purchase daily resort access to enjoy all facilities and amenities at both the Mauna Kea and Westin Hapuna Resorts. Access must be purchased for the entire duration of your stay and covers all registered guests in the unit. Please note: This privilege is offered directly by Mauna Kea Resort, and South Kohala Management is not responsible for any changes to resort services or amenities. Rates are as follows:

Great house - layout, view pool, etc, but the property needs some attention to be offered at this price point / affiliated with Mauna Kea. Upholstered furniture is very dirty and worn and the house needs a deep clean. (window sills, baseboards, tile) With the exception of some new chairs outside, furnishings are very dated -- and not in a charming old Hawai'i way. Appliances need to be replaced. House manager was fantastic and responsive to things like the AC being out when we arrived and amenities that were low. (detergent, dish towels) Overall great trip. Can't go wrong with a house at Mauna Kea.

Property was exactly as described, and the setting/location was even better! Property management team and booking management team were all super supportive and responsive. Loved our visit and looking forward to visiting again!

This house has so much going for it. Just a super location, lots of privacy and fantastic sunset views. The pool and spa were outstanding, and Kris (the property manager) responded to a couple of minor things we needed help with immediately. The property probably could use a little updating, but that didn't impact our visit at all. The availability of two close resorts for a daily fee was well worth it. Outstanding trip!

First the land on which this property sits is beautiful. You have amazing views of the resort and the ocean. Sunset is beautiful. This property is all about potential. This home has clearly been “let go.” The mid-century modern feel needs to be freshened up. The home needs a new coat of paint and a deep clean. The air conditioning in the bedrooms is inadequate and the master is a sauna most of the day/night. As for the rest of the home, the valley in which this home sits does not allow for a nice breeze to fill the open air areas that do not have A/C…leaving the living room and kitchen unbearable. No family could gather in these rooms comfortably. This home could be so much…if it was just painted/cleaned/kept up. Kudos to the property management company who after we sent pictures of the home condition relocated us to an amazing property so our vacation was not ruined. I would stay away from this home unless the price is dropped significantly.

This was a great place for two families (4 adults, 3 13-16 yo children). Bedrooms have AC and house is completely stocked to make the trip easy. Would rent again.

House is beautiful. Check in process needs to be changed as no one went over everything and management could step up their response. Windows and exterior of house could use a cleaning.
