Stayed Feb 19, 2026Our trip started off pretty stressful. A tree fell on power lines along Route 50 while we were driving up, and we ended up waiting in Pollock Pines for about four hours before learning the road wouldn’t reopen. With a 6-year-old and a 7-month-old baby, we ultimately had to turn around, drive back down to Folsom, and book a hotel for the night. Unfortunately, since the reservation was nonrefundable, we lost the first night’s payment.Communication for the rental felt a bit impersonal. The responses seemed AI-generated, and when I sent a few messages with specific questions about the road closures. I received generic replies. A little more personalized communication would have made a big difference, especially given the circumstances. That said, the house itself is very nice. The steam shower and sauna were amazing after being out in the snow, and the fireplaces made the space feel warm and cozy. The downstairs video room was a big hit and perfect for relaxing in the evenings.A few small improvements: labeling the remotes and providing clearer instructions for the electronics would be helpful, the towels had a bit of a strange smell and likely need replacing, and the can openers were broken/hard to use.Other than those minor issues, we had a nice stay. We even saw three coyotes walking through the backyard, which was a memorable experience!Overall, once we finally arrived, we were able to relax and enjoy the home. Just wish we could have had that extra night.

Stayed Jul 19, 2025ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL HOME!My family of four spent five days at this rental for my son's 21st birthday. We wanted a place that was close enough to Tahoe so we could enjoy the town when we wanted, but also removed from the hustle and bustle. The location was perfect! We looked at so many rentals before deciding on this home. When you book a place to stay, you hope for the best. I can say when we entered this home our expectations were exceeded. It was beautiful, yet comfortable and cozy. We cooked the majority of our meals in and there was not one single thing we needed that this home didn't have. That was such a plus. We even saw a Mama Bear walking down the road AND her cub playing right off the deck where we bbq'd! If you're looking for a quiet and peaceful vacation house just a few minutes from town that comes fully stocked with everything you could need - this is the place!

Stayed Mar 21, 2025Clean house that has been thoughtfully built and decorated- good for a family or intimate friends trip! Went with our friends, their two kids (3 and 2 y/o) and our two dogs. Didn’t even need to go somewhere to play in the snow- lots of options in the front and side yard. We used the grill and had a nice staycation. All amenities were as stated and the kids enjoyed the toys the rental provided! After a day in the snow.. it was nice to curl up by the fire and warm up. One tip.. if going with kids or older dogs who can’t be around stairs, bring two sets of barrier /baby gate that’s about 3 feet wide to block off the stairs, as it’s a 3 level house.Hope to stay again! Thank you ;)

We encountered a minor issue with a kitchen appliance, but it was resolved within hours. The property is well maintained, and we highly recommend it to anyone seeking a fantastic place to stay. 5 stars!!

Stayed Jul 18, 2024We very much enjoyed our stay at the Shining Shire with just a few recommendations for improvement. On the plus side this is a great house for adults and teens with a poker table, x-box, many board games, and a varied movie library. Although the listing says the projector wasn't working we found that it did work and enjoyed movies in the evening after a game of poker and board games. We also enjoyed the extras like the Sauna, Bidet, Towel Warmer and Steam Shower. The location is great for riding bikes, getting to the best of Tahoe within 10-15 minutes, and we even spent an afternoon at the nearby Upper Truckee River. There is enough parking for vehicles. Areas of Improvement: 1. It is a pet friendly home, which we appreciated, bringing our dog, but there was an old urine odor in some of the sitting areas. This was reported to the management and they said they would notify the caretakers. 2. The coffee pot is very small. You might want to bring your own if you have more than two coffee drinkers. 3. We couldn’t find pot holders and there were some remotes that didn’t have working batteries. There is no air conditioning, which is common for Tahoe homes. This is more of information for future renters than recommendation for improvement. The men in our group were hot at night even with fans. If you run hot you might want to be aware. Finally be aware that there are three levels to this home with wooden stairs. It is not a good booking for anyone with mobility issues.
