Gloucester, Virginia
The farmhouse at Turner Hall sits at the heart of this historic waterfront estate, and is close to the Colonial Triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. Situated on the grounds of one of the finest houses in historic Gloucester County, amenities include an outdoor pool (May through October), a private boat dock and over 500 meters of waterfront. This is an ideal getaway for a romantic weekend, for keen fishermen, for history buffs or just to enjoy the natural beauty of Ware Neck and Mobjack Bay .
The setting--with lawns and the North River before; farmland and forests behind--creates an ideal atmosphere for recreation and amusement, for contemplation and reflection, for building and renewing relationships, for taking stock, or for a simple pause in the daily routine. At this time, at this location, there is no high-speed internet, only a hotspot--so enjoy it while you can: step off the escalator and revel in the peace.
In the the first rays of morning light, you will see Homer's 'rosy-fingered dawn' giving promise for the day to come. You will watch the clouds forming and see the weather moving in over the water. Now and then you will see deer avidly consuming the foliage--sometimes the very flowers under your window; and once in a while, if you are lucky, you may see a vain, handsome, buck out on the lawns striking poses against the sky. The fish leap constantly in the basin. On all sides you will see rabbits, straight from Beatrix Potter, looking for fun and mischief, while our resident eagles peer down from the branches of a dead tree, looking for lunch. If you leave your oranges out to sweeten on the porch railing and forget them overnight, chances are a raccoon or some such relative will quietly help himself. And day or night, whenever the wind blows, the lazy old farm windmill moans and grumbles whether you like it or not.
For most people, the sum essence is a welcome change from normal daily life.
The 700 sq ft farmhouse is arranged on two floors with a yard, a patio and off-road parking, as well as access to the extensive grounds of the surrounding estate. It can host up to four people. There is a fully equipped kitchen and an open plan dining and sitting area on the first floor, with a full bathroom and two bedrooms upstairs. One bedroom has a queen bed and the other bedroom has twin beds. The patio has a table and four chairs for outdoor dining. Being an old structure, the ceiling in the downstairs sitting/dining area is somewhat low ( just over 7 ft).
Please note we also have a one bedroom guest cottage (for two people) on the estate which is a separate listing on VRBO entitled "Waterfront Cottage with pool".
We really loved the setting of the property. It was quiet and lovely. The house itself was nice but was lacking certain amenities compared to other similar properties at this price range. For example, there was no soap in the bathroom or many bowls or utensils in the kitchen. There weren’t many directions at the location in terms of the WiFi or the heating system. Fortunately the owner was very accessible and provided all the information we needed. In sum, it is an absolutely stunning house in a lovely location. Many thanks for the great stay!
Excellent property inside and outside. Very private away from the hustle and bustle. Private beach and pool were enjoyable with no other people around and the boat dock in a small cove was great for fishing. Plenty of restaurants in the area so we didn't have to cook, but house was set up nicely if we wanted to prepare meals. We would definitely stay again.
This is our 3rd stay at the farmhouse at Turner Hall, and we loved it, once again! Charming accommodations, private, beautiful grounds, a lovely salt water pool - and communications with the owner were prompt and helpful. We hope to go back again soon!
The property is idyllic and very peaceful. The house is so charming. We enjoyed our stay and exploring the town. Thank you.
We had a wonderful time at the river. We took our wave runner, kayak and bicycles! Jane was wonderful to deal with and very accommodating. The pool was amazing. We can’t wait to return!
The property owner, Jane, was prompt in answering all of my questions. We loved the serenity of the property and the quiet, calm, peaceful and relaxing venue. We loved also having a private pool. This has nothing to do with the hostess or the accommodations it is all due to me. I unfortunately would not stay again because of the spiral staircase and bathroom only on 2nd floor. I am 77 and have difficulty navigating. The tub was a little difficult also. However, it was a perfect weekend. Would suggest you add Seafood Shack in Matthews to the list of restaurants. Thanks so much. Shirley Gibson
Clean and well equipped. Very responsive host. Would highly recommend and would definitely stay there again.
We really enjoyed our stay. The property was lovely and very comfortable.
We were blown away by the charm and uniqueness of Turner Hall. Situated on the North River, the main house is stately and absolutely beautiful. The grounds are well kept and expansive. The Farmhouse where we stayed was so charming, clean and comfortable. We loved having access to the pool and kayaked off the beach. I wish we could have stayed longer! It was quiet and peaceful and convenient to town.
Such a beautiful and peaceful place. Our week was one of rest and relaxation. Lounging at the pool, fishing, crabbing and gathering a few shells. Thank you
The property is a restored farm cottage on, what looks like, a former plantation. It's right next to the North River and you can launch your kayak either from a small sand beach or a pier, both on the property. There is a very well maintained swimming pool, and lots and lots of nature. This place is a real hidden gem, both the house and the surroundings.
We greatly enjoyed our time getting away from our busy lives and enjoying a beautiful property on the water. House was as advertised and had all the amenities that we needed. Tranquil setting on the water with a large pool to lounge around. We enjoyed walking the grounds with coffee in the morning and took quick day trips in town. Would stay again. Note: We did not have a reason to reach out to the property host, but she made herself available if necessary.
This was our second visit to the farmhouse at Turner Hall ... and it was even better than our last one. Comfortable house, beautiful grounds, privacy, and this time ... use of the gorgeous pool. We'll be back again!
If you are looking for a quiet, calm getaway - this is your spot! This spot has everything you need: kitchen, living space, lots of books and comfy chairs, a clawfoot tub, and a quick walk to a gorgeous pool, not to mention the water views.
We celebrated my husband's birthday at the Farmhouse Cottage on the river in Gloucester. The quaint two story cottage is adorable and the circular staircase adds to the charm. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking which we did both nights but the names of several nearby restaurants were also provided by our gracious host, Jane. We enjoyed the peaceful, beautiful property on the water and hope to return soon!
The property is clean and cute. Nice and quiet with a good feel.
This property is so beautiful and quiet! My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the cottage listening to the birds, sitting by the water, and just relaxing.
