Just renovated!
Aloha, we'd like to share with you the story of our property, Pu'u Menehune, which was, until recently, bull pasture for Parker Ranch. Our pristine 13-acre parcel, located in the heart of Paniola (Hawaiian cowboy) country, is blessed with a meandering stream, abundant waterfalls, and unsurpassed views of sacred Mauna Kea ('White Mountain') volcano.

As you will experience when you hike Pu'u Menehune, this area was the summer playground for Hawaiian Ali'i (royalty) who came to Waimea for its cool upslope weather, open spaces, fun outdoor activities, and beautiful vistas. This is truly God's Country!

The 1920's paniolo style home (bungalow) was formerly part of the historic Waimea Hotel and was saved by the owners from the wrecking ball when it was moved to its present location and painstakingly restored to its former glory -- a project that took the owners over 2-years to complete. Each room is furnished with period antiques and fixtures including an old, double drain, porcelain kitchen sink, period porcelain pedestal sinks in the bathrooms, chandeliers and period lighting in every room, high ceilings with original crown moldings, as well as a wood burning fireplace with ample firewood, and a wrap-around porch to entice you out of the house for the evening. During your stay, you will feel as though you stepped back in time, to a time when life was easier, when relaxation was permissible, when sitting on the front porch was the evening's entertainment.

On a clear, moonlit night, you will be treated to unsurpassed views of Mauna Kea. Feel free to do a 'moon walk' under the star-filled skies. Greet the morning with your fresh cup of Kona coffee and watch the sunrise as you gaze across Parker Ranch's vast pastures and grazing cattle. Watch as the sun dances across two beautiful pu'u (cinder cones) fronting the property graced with frisky horses and Jurassic Park-like scenery surrounding the bungalow-house.

Pu'u Menehune is surrounded by beautiful, native forests, horse and cattle ranches, pastures, and unspoiled forests, and has its own flowing stream with numerous waterfalls and ponds nurturing moss-covered-river-rock. Look and you will be treated to the sight of Ring-Knecked and Kalij Pheasants, Turkeys, California and Francolin Quail, as well as endemic honey-creepers and birds of prey like the Hawaiian owl (Pueo) and Hawaiian hawk (I'o). Enjoy the beauty of your own stream and the many pristine waterfalls which cascade along its course forming numerous ponds. The property is partially forested with endemic Koa, Ohia, Iliahi (sandalwood), Hapu'u ferns, Maile, and other native plants. Fruit trees include apple, peach, pear, plum, cherry, orange, tangerine, lemon, lime, and clementine trees. Our 13 acre ranch offers you privacy, peace and quiet, hiking, and nature walks along our pristine stream just a two-minute walk from the house, breathtaking waterfalls, and unsurpassed vistas of Mauna Kea and of the Parker Ranch lands and is vast pastures below, as well as abundant and unspoiled nature -- an artist's and photographer's delight! Located at a 3,300 foot elevation, the property offers constantly changing weather patterns and it is not unusual to find yourself standing in a cloud or mountain mist.

Although you will feel like you are in a world of your own, the charming town of Waimea is just 5 minutes away by car and offers all modern conveniences. The only thing we ask is that you join us in cherishing and protecting our historic home and this beautiful land -- truly God's Country!

Our historic, plantation bungalow features 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a day-bed, a gourmet kitchen having an antique porcelain double sink, modern stainless steel appliances including refrigerator, gas stove with an electric oven located on an island, microwave, kitchen fully furnished with dishes (some antique), glasses (including wine glasses), cutlery, pots, pans, baking pans, spices, and partly stocked pantry. Kona coffee and various teas are sometime available in the 'coffee bar'. Other features include high ceilings with original mouldings, antique lighting, wood burning fireplace, wrap around porch to enjoy those breathtaking views, vistas from every room, cable t.v., DVD player, CD stereo (music will never sound better), and a walk-in, slate shower with panoramic views! The two bedrooms have queen sized beds that sleep 4 adults. One bedroom has a princess cradle for an infant or toddler. The living room has a 'day-bed' for a fifth adult or two if you like it cozy. A stacked washer/dryer is also available.

We promise you a memorable stay! With Aloha!

I want to be clear, most of the reasons for our rating were out of our host's control. There are many good reasons to stay in this house. Our trip was one of those where a lot of things went wrong. The house is in a fantastic location in the hills above Waimea, with wonderful views of Mauna Kea. We saw wild turkeys, pheasants, and wild pigs on the property. The guestbook in the house had many entries where previous guests noted the peace and tranquility of the home. We stayed in December, in a very rainy and cold period. The host had warned us to bring warm clothing, which we did. However, there was a gap under the back door and in some window frames where wind and rain were coming in, making the home very cold and damp. In a discussion with the host after our visit, the host did think the house had settled recently and was sending a carpenter in to work on the door. So I would imagine this may not happen to other visitors. However, we used every blanket in the house to keep warm, and we left those out to be washed after our visit. While we didn't find the house to be very comfortable, the weather was a factor in that. Certainly the host is not responsible for the weather. Our host did call me after we left, asking about a door handle that had fallen off, and a leaky soap bottle. The handle had fallen off the first time I touched it, and the soap was already leaking when we got there. I suggest that the host visit his house to see what items need repair.

What an amazing place. It felt like an honour that the host would open this spectacular place for visitors. Words can't describe enough how special this location is. The host was clear upfront about the location and how to take care of it, he was responsive and very welcoming. It far exceeded my expectations.

This is a unique property brimming with history and charm. You won’t find another place like it in Hawai’i - or perhaps the world. The house has been lovingly maintained to preserve its cultural and architectural integrity. The site is safe and rural yet only five minutes from Waimea.Sunrises from the lanai were breathtaking. When the sky was clear, we had stunning views of Mauna Kea. Misty mornings offered their own enchantment, as shape-shifting clouds drifted down from Kohala Mountain. We kept commenting on how much the property reminded us of The Shire from The Lord of the Rings. Lush meadows and majestic, old-growth trees with long, sprawling branches flourish. The green slopes surrounding Pu’u Menehune provide a soothing contrast to the dry, rocky landscapes visible in the distance.Via a short walk down a mowed path, we reached the forest and found the pond with a natural waterfall - perpetually fed by the mountain. We eagerly waded through the pond and relaxed under the waterfall while the afternoon sun shined through the clouds. We enjoyed native ōhiʻa lehua trees flowering near the lanai and songbirds serenading from those trees. Likewise, we were greeted by pheasant, turkey, and spurfowl as we drove Haloa Road on our way to/from the house. With patience, we also observed Hawai’i’s endemic hawk: the ‘Io flying over the meadows, the woods, and the house itself.Pu’u Menehune is a magnificent, magical place, and we absolutely did not want to leave!

Such an astonishing view and super cute home. You feel as though you are in your own world and a different era. Very well done decor for the old world feel. The kitchen was stocked beautifully and also the perfect set up for cooking. The land goes without saying- very very special.Every morning waking to the view of the sacred Mauna Kea mountain.Peter was a great host and available whenever needed. On the flip side, i do believe the house could usesome real updates to linens, rugs and general housekeeping care. Windows were dirty with spider webs- some furtniture is broken and seems to have been that way for a bit. Water pressure is not great and the Japanese tub does not work.I would recommend staying here because the beauty alone cannot be beat- but there could definitely be some cosmetic upgrades to get it into shape.
