Nestled in the Chippewa National Forest 3 1/2 hours north of the Twin Cities and 5 minutes out of Remer is 17 acres with a handscribed log lodge on Upper Milton Lake waiting for you to come relax and enjoy nature. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise with eagles, osprey, herons, bitterns and many other songbirds calling it home. The North Country National Scenic Trail intersects the driveway lending access to miles of trails and wilderness where you’ll find wildflowers, berries, grouse, woodcock, deer, bear, and timber wolves. Whether you want to cast a line off the floating dock in everyone’s “secret” fishing lake, gather around the campfire watching the northern lights or sit cozily inside by the fireplace this Northwood’s retreat is the place for you.

Amenities: Come get away from it all.. The log lodge was built in the 1980’s by the owner and her husband with the logs taken from the land on which the house stands. The shoreline with its water lilies floating alongside the dock was left natural so all could enjoy the way nature intended it to be. New Screenhouse with lakeview being constructed!

The Lodge is 2 ½ story walkout with deck around the main level. The upper loft is a bedroom with a queen-size bed, futon, and twin bed overlooking the living room and a panoramic view of the lake. The main floor has an open floor plan with kitchen, dining room and living room. The gas fireplace is ready with a flick of a switch. There is also a bedroom with twin beds and a full bath on this floor. A spiral staircase leads to the lower level that has a bedroom with queen-size bed, a family room with a futon, full bathroom with shower, kitchen, and laundry room.

Down at the lake is a floating dock with a Otter Island Swim raft, along with a new aluminum paddle boat, 3 kayaks, child kayak, 2 paddle boards and a 12 ft aluminum row boat.

Activities and Attractions: Birdwatching: Many of the most sought-after birds in North America can be found. These include the Great Gray Owl, Bald Eagle, Boreal Owl, Northern Goshawk, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, Connecticut Warbler, Yellow Rail, Herons, Bitterns and Swans. In the winter you can also see the Snowy Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Northern Shrike, Gyrfalcon, and Snow Bunting, crossbills, redpolls and winter finches.

Fishing: Fish of panfish, large mouth bass, northern pike in Milton or off the dock or other area lakes, Graves, Sand, Thunder, Woman or Long Lake which are minutes away. Minnesota’s premier walleye lakes, Leech, Big Boy, Winnibigoshish are within a 40 miles radius.
Boating: Bring your canoe, kayak or motorboat for the many area lakes. Boy River, 10 miles away, is a canoe route; maps available through the Chippewa National Forest.
Photography: Whether its wildflowers, birds or wildlife you are sure to find many subjects to snap. DNR has been doing a wolf/ deer study just out our backdoor. Then National North Country Trail comes right down to Milton Lake and travels down the road into the house.

Fantastic Hunting and Birding Lodge: Northwoods Log Lodge is a prime area for bird watching, bird hunting and big game hunting. Special rates for hunters. Public land out your doorstep for 5 miles. National Scenic North Country Hiking Trail runs down the dirve into the house. Close to Johnson Lake Grouse hunter hiking trails and numerous logging roads. Pheasant hunting game farm within 15 miles. Big Rice Lake just south of Remer for duck hunters and many pot hole lakes in Chippewa National Forest. Deer hunting paradise out the back door on owners land.

The cabin is beautiful and in a serene location. The amenities are perfect; lots to do and very comfortable for a family of 6 plus 2 dogs for 3 days. We appreciated being able to have our dogs with us. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. The kitchen was well-appointed and there were lots of games, movies, and toys to enjoy. The kids liked boating, attempting to fish, and exploring the trails with their bikes. Plenty of towels, kitchen supplies (including gas grill), pillows, life jackets, lawn games, firewood, etc.

This is our second time staying, and it was just as great this time! The house is super clean, easily fits 6 adults (with room for more), and provides tons of activities. This is the perfect place to relax and unplug. The lake is gorgeous, quiet, easy to access, and the provided paddle boards/kayaks/row boats are super fun. We enjoyed the fire pit and star gazing in the evenings. Our dog came with us this time and she had a blast too! Highly recommend!

Place was beautiful. Very quiet and alot of open land to play games and our dogs loved the outdoor space. Interior had plenty of space for our family of 5, everyone was able to have their own space. Having all the water toys available was amazing, we went out everyday. We will be back, the pictures dont do this place justice so beautiful.

House was just as advertised. Very clean and fully stocked. There were lots of yard games, water toys, etc. The weather wasnt super cooperative but the house was large enough to have everyone inside and not feel cramped. The host has truly thought of everything! Our family will definitely be back.

Private, serene, classic log cabin that is perfect for a family with kids. We really enjoyed the floating swim raft, all the water toys (four kayaks, three stand-up paddle boards, canoe, row boat, paddle/peddle boat), the fire pit, yard games, and being able to bring our dogs. We had such a wonderful stay, would definitely stay again!

Overall this was a great place to stay and we really enjoyed the property. The house was very comfortable and the kitchen was incredibly well stocked compared to other places I have stayed. The main North country trailhead nearby was not accessible because the road was flooded, and it sounds like that is often the case. There is trail access a bit down the road from the property but it petered out eventually into a large meadow where we lost the trail path. Overall, that section of the trail was poorly maintained. I missed that there was a pet fee, and the owner kinda freaked out on me when their cleaner came and there was a dog that had clearly been there. She also accused us of having more guests than originally stated because we had used more than three beds (we changed where we slept part of the way through the trip because our dog became scared of the open-style spiral staircases). But if we rent the place, can't we use every bed if we want? Overall, I didn't appreciate being accused of bad intentions to cheat the owner when it was just an oversight and I paid the pet fee immediately upon realizing the mistake. I won't stay here again because of that but the property and house is lovely.

We had an amazing stay. Cabin was warm and cozy- snowed every day. Our “family walks” around the lake, walking the trails with the dogs, our trip to Remer, Black Friday shopping in Grand Rapids at Glen’s Army Navy and we won at the northern lights casino. It was a wonderful family thanksgiving spot!!

The house was spotless with plenty of room for everyone. A nice firepit with wood to burn. Outside yard games. Best of all though, 3 kayaks, 2 paddle boards, 2 person paddle boat and 2 person canoe, so lots of water toys. The lake is small so easy to paddle about lake is small

The cabin was a perfect place to stay. Quiet and private. Cabin was exceptionally clean and had everything we needed to enjoy our time with little worry. We took full advantage of the lake, kayaks, and paddle boards and can’t wait to make a return trip in the future.

I happily write a second review for our second stay at this cabin -- but all you really need to know is that we immediately booked our second trip after our first one ended. This location simply has everything you need for a Northwoods vacation. It's heaven.
