Castara, Tobago
High on a ridge, Parrot Estate is set in one acre of secluded landscaped grounds. It offers views of both the Caribbean Sea and the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, the oldest legally protected rain forest in the Western Hemisphere.
The property is Caribbean villa style with ceiling fans and hard wood and tiled flooring throughout. The living space comprises of an open plan living and kitchen area with five double doors opening onto a covered porch. There are two double bedrooms, each with its own shower and lavatory and two double doors, again opening onto the covered porch. In addition, the property has a utility room with a dedicated workspace. The main house comprises of approximately one thousand three hundred square feet of accommodation with the porch and attached gazebo giving an additional one thousand five hundred square feet under cover. In total the villa has twelve full height double doors which allow it to be fully opened and connected to the outdoors.
The garden includes a feature swimming pool which is approximately thirty feet across and its widest point.
Englishman’s Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island is one mile away. A walk from the house and up Miss Mills Trace takes you to the edge of the rainforest
This is a beautiful colonial-style property. It is fully-equipped and we spent a wonderful, peaceful time here. This place is ideal for romantic getaways or socially-distanced vacations. We came while COVID-19 rtestrictions were pretty strict on the island. However, we didn't have to deal with the outside world. Surrounded by greenery and absolute peace, it was exactly what we needed after months of lockdown. The view from the pool is amazing, and opens up into green hills with Englishman's Bay just below. Do note that this is a remote jungle retreat. There is no grocery within walking distance, and the village nearby only has a couple of places where you can buy food. So make sure you pick up what you need in Scarborough or the Lowlands area. Also, do not bring a sedan. The property itself is up a hill, and the final stretch of the road was not paved. It was also rainy season, and it was a fairly difficult drive when it was raining, even though we had an SUV. Once you are up there, there is no need to leave. Just make sure you don't accidentally end up hauling your stuff up the hill. The local property manager, Jason, lives on the nearby village and was very warm and very helpful. He showed us the property, offered to pick up extra groceries, and checked on us to make sure we lacked for nothing. He also helped me locate nearby sights and pointed out which services were available at Castara Village.
All the reviews are true. Parrot Estate Villa is a little piece of absolute paradise - nestled up in the ridge and surrounded by lush forest humming with wildlife. We loved keeping the hummingbird feeder topped up, and became accustomed to our nighttime fly-throughs from bats, massive moths and beetles. The house is comfortable and well equipped, with lots of delicious fruit and flowers to enjoy. The pool is a cooling haven on a hot day. Even when it rained, it was a pleasure to sit out and watch it all - such beautiful scenery it never gets boring. The drive is a little hairy at first but we soon got used to it. WiFi worked great. Kate was an excellent host - kind and thoughtful, super responsive and full of great advice. Her man on the ground Jason was the same. We had a BRILLIANT time and would highly recommend. THANK YOU Kate and Jason!
The photos do not do it justice. Such a beautiful location, I would love to return.
I really don't know where to begin. The owners have been incredibly helpful and furnished us with all the information we needed to stay in this stunningly beautiful remote villa. It was a little difficult to find the first night but we got there to an amazing welcome from Jason the property manager. Every property out there needs a Jason we cannot thank him enough for everything he did for us during our stay. So to the main event this place is so cathartic and incredibly good for your well-being the hummingbirds, parrots, red squirrels, lizards I could go on. If you like buzz and busy then this is not for you. If on the other hand you want to reconnect with yourself then it is. It truly is paradise and we have falien in love with the island and it's people. Everything you need and more is there. Again thank you Kevin and Jackie Simon
We had a wonderful time at the villa! Waking up to the sounds of parrots and other birds in the middle of the rainforest was just magical. We also enjoyed the pool very much and the fact that it is only a 5-minute drive to Englishman’s Bay. Jason, the caretaker of the house, went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. He is the nicest guy - easy-going, funny and flexible but also absolutely reliable and attentive. We would love to come back!!
We loved waking up every morning to watch the parrots from our hammocks…the chakalaka birds sure didn't let us miss it! Our first breakfast was grapefruits right off the tree on the property…our only regret was not being there in wet season because they also have mangos, bananas, and more all over the property! In general, this villa was a relaxing and romantic escape in the rainforest…though I'd definitely recommend a 4x4 vehicle to get up to the estate. Castara is only a 10 minute drive and the beautiful Englishman's Bay Beach is closeby, though a fairly steep hike! The house itself came loaded with extras that we were appreciative of…lots of cooking ware, extra towels and bedding, games, and beers in the fridge when we arrived. We did have an incident with the stove burner being a bit old and the element frying on us but the barbecue turned out to be a better option anyway! Jason, who tends to the grounds and the guests, was absolutely amazing to us…he brought us all of the local fruits we should try and even a catch of the day fish with some local herbs and spices. He also showed us around the property and taught us about everything they grow there. This villa is definitely a hidden gem and if you want a more remote getaway in the middle of nature, you need to check it out!
We could not have been happier with our choice of places to stay here in Tobago's lovely Castera community. The house and setting were perfect for our needs; not super fancy, just peaceful, tranquil and ideal. Our 5 year old was in the pool daily, as were we. Waking up each morning to the parrots chattering in the tress and bamboo was great. So many fruit trees on the property, friendly neighbors, and Jason. Jason oversees the property and is a value added asset not to be underappreciated. He went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay, and became a good friend. It was hard to leave and we look forward to returning, the sooner the better.
Just what we needed for a really peaceful break away from everyday pressures. The villa itself is a haven on the edge of the rainforest with amazing bird life on view much of the time. A short walk away is the beach, but we preferred the pool side, plenty of shade and comfortable hammocks to lounge in. We also enjoyed the large gardens with the many exotic fruit trees. The local fish restaurants are excellent and only a short drive away. Jason was really incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, and added to the pleasure of our holiday.
Came here with my husband for our 20th anniversary and couldn’t have wished for a more romantic setting. The amazing location right on top of the hill meant we could watch the stunning rise and setting of the sun every day, and being just a walk from Englishman’s bay we took our time to absorb the stunning nature of the island. We shall definitely be returning in not too long I hope. Thank you Parrot Estate!
When we booked this property we knew that it was in the rain forest so shouldn’t really complain as we knew it would be a little remote however it was probably too isolated for us especially as the access road to the house is a real challenge especially in the dark. Cons The house really is in need of some TLC and is lacking some glassware and crockery sets also. No WiFi (some may see this as a blessing) The pool and surrounding area is in need of repair Safe was not available Pros Beautiful garden and views. Enjoyed watching and listening to all the species of birds. Assistance and advice from Jason who is a super character. Rent his jeep as it was a Godsend. Castara has some real character. The locals are very friendly and food is good in the restaurants. Kate is very responsive and supplies some really useful local information. We had a really good time in Tobago although it did rain quite a lot. We would recommend the day boat trip (with snorkelling) with Alibaba. Superb day. If you want to be located in a remote position with heaps of wildlife around then this is the place for you. My advice is to be 100% sure of what you really want.
Where do we begin? Kate's home was an absolute slice of heaven in paradise. Jason the groundskeeper was a star, such a positive soul, he helped us with any questions or needs that we had. The views were positively breathtaking, we had complete privacy, there were not any neighbors close by - perfect for couples/families that do not want to be disturbed. The many doors allowed the cool Caribbean breeze into the house from every direction, the place is a hidden gem. Every morning I opened our bedroom door and jumped into the pool - we felt like kids again! We never wanted to leave. We hope to return soon :) Thanks for everything!!!!
