Abiquiu, New Mexico
In the spring of 2010 Martinez Casita opened also for short term rentals. Conveniently located next to Barranca Plaza Casita, a favorite of many Ghost Ranch visitors for the last 7 years!
Barranca is an old Hispanic hamlet just west of Abiquiu above the Chama River. On its small plaza there are a few adobe houses, one of which is this very charming one bedroom, one bath vacation home.
The thick adobe walls have built-in banco's in the living area. Throughout the casita are tiled and wooden floors. A woodstove gives you great comfort in the winter. The thick walls keeps the house cool in the summer.
A large garden with fruit trees surrounds the casita.
In Barranca you will find a lively creek coming from the mountains. Follow the spring-fed creek up-stream and enter the Santa Fe National Forest with sensational views of the Abiquiu valley and the surrounding mountain lands. Badlands with goblin-like formations are nearby. The Chama River, along which are cattle ranches, is great for fishing.
The casita is just minutes from Georgia O'Keeffe's home and a short drive from the Piedra Lumbre basin. Ghost Ranch is worth many visits and don't forget to drive out into the Chama River canyon to hike or visit the Benedictine Monastery. The Chama River Wilderness is paradise for explorers.
The acequia, the traditional Hispanic community water system, is still held in high regard in Barranca. The mayordomo decides who irrigates when. The casita’s garden can be irrigated on Saturdays.
Great day trips can be made to Ojo Caliente Mineral Hot Springs, Taos en Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Chama (with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad), Bandelier National Monument, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, Valle Grande, etc. etc.
Family gatherings and reunions:
Both Martinez Casita and Barranca Plaza Casita offer full privacy. Yet since the casitas are sitting together on one end of Barranca Plaza, they form an ideal gathering place for groups of eight family members or old school friends. BBQ facilities are provided and there are great shadowy spots to linger under the trees. Special rates are available when both casitas are rented.

This place was great! It's much larger than it looks on VRBO site. Floyd is great, super helpful. I have two minor suggestions: 1. put some shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom. 2. There's a lot of light pollution. Abiquiu is a great place for dark sky. Maybe put a shield of some sort on the big street light? Great place!!
This was a great casita in a beautiful location. We really enjoyed our stay. Saw everything in Abiquiu! Will go there again.
This was our third trip to Abiquiu and the cozy and comfortable Martinez Casita. We love the area, which provides great hiking and serenity, and the Martinez family members are gracious hosts.
I really enjoyed my stay in this lovely little casita, though little isn't really accurate! It was super roomy with separate living areas, outside pergola BBQ area and views of the mountains. The casita was convenient for exploring the area without the bother of road noise and I enjoyed the bucolic nature of the location. I was greeted by Nimfa, who was super friendly and kind, and gave me some great suggestions. I would recommend this for anyone who likes to get off the beaten track!
Pristinely, clean and roomy vintage casita. Owner is friendly and helpful. A perfect little spot for my three night stay in Abiquiu.
My wife has been going to this area on New Mexico since she was one. Never disappoints. Now we have a wonderful VRBO to try to book early for our next stay.
Great remote/quiet getaway. Very nice people.
Our host Floyd was most helpful! I’m so glad the yard was fenced in for my doggie.
Northern New Mexico at its best! Our host, Floyd Martinez, very friendly and hospitable, generous and thoughtful in every way. This casita is beautifully situated on high ground affording excellent views and easy access to historic Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch, Santa Fe and many other local destinations. Floyd works very hard to sustain and maintain the property and its gardens; the roses are spectacular! The adobe walled compound was excellent for our small dog and for us as well. There are several excellent outdoor seating areas. The casita felt like home, is well appointed for every need with beautiful local artists' works to enjoy. The overall ambiance is genuine, authentic, warm and comfortable. We enjoyed the AC in warm weather and there are space heaters and a wood stove for colder weather. TV is served by Firestick and the WiFi allowed us to use our Dish Anywhere app. We are already planning our next visit! Thank you floyd and family!
The casita is spacious and comfortable for two. The family who offers this casita are wonderful! I highly recommend.
This is a beautiful house with great outdoor spaces; we would stay here again without hesitation.
This was a great, serene location for our visit to Abiquiu. Mr. Martinez was extremely helpful. We had plenty of room and everything you could need.
Very nice location. Good for walks.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Martinez casita and our time exploring the area. The host, Floyd, is very helpful and attentive. We had a small mechanical problem that was fixed promptly and completely satisfactorily. Floyd is very helpful with local information. The casita is spacious and full of character. Very comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed. We extended our stay and plan to return. An experience deserving of a top rating.
We would stay here again
Lovely casita. Kind and attentive hosts. Spectacular scenary steeped in history. So grateful for my stay!
Warm, fuzzy and comfy. We had an unlimited supply of firewood!! Did not truly appreciate this until we went to our next location which did not supply firewood nor did the host tell us we needed to supply firewood. We were freezing the first night because it was too late to find firewood. Communication was great. Floyd is a fantastic host.
It was very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. The host and his parents are the best people to know. We have become good friends over the years and will keep staying there in the future.
My son and I had rented this property for our hunting trip. It was nearby or big game hunting unit and convenience store and gas station
We enjoyed our second stay here and will certainly be returning again. Floyd is a wonderful host and the adorable adobe has everything it claims and more. The view is spectacular, the drive up to the casita is beautiful with the fall colors ( beautiful golden leaves of the cottonwoods down by the river), and the casita itself is so clean and well stocked. We love the serenity that the place offers and yet, it is only a couple of miles from Bode’s store and the Abiquiu Inn where they serve the most delicious food. Definitely a five star stay!
Roomy with all amenities we needed. Floyd’s mom was super welcoming and full of info! Super quiet! I would recommend!
Absolutely beautiful place to stay. Quiet, private, spacious and clean. Totally recommend this for anyone looking for a great place to stay. Would love to go back one day!
This was truly an adorable, relaxing, spacious and comfortable place to vacation. Location was perfect- amenities appreciated- Floyd the owner even gave me fresh veggies from his garden! I really, really enjoyed this house, the atmosphere and the area!
The host family is lovely and Abiquiu is a wonderful quiet place to get away to.
Beautiful property and homes. Gracious hosts!
Our stay at the Martinez Casita was uneventful, which was just what we needed. All the creature comforts were present. The queen-size bed was comfortable-we slept like babies. Good rest gave strength for excursions. Streaming TV available, but sometimes had to disconnect phones from wi-fi to view TV--not bad considering the mountainous location. We didn't cook much, but could have. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in spite of winds & fire threats. Wonderful hosts!
