PENNY-FARTHING HOUSE - HANDS DOWN THE BEST DEAL IN NOLA

Famed playwright Tennessee Williams once quipped, “America has only three great cities; New York, San Francisco and New Orleans. Everything else is Cleveland.” Harry Connick Jr. put It another way, “I’ve been all over the world. I love New York, I love Paris, San Francisco, so many places. But there’s no place like New Orleans. It’s got the best food. It’s got the best music. It’s got the best people. It’s go the most fun stuff to do.” We agree. Especially eat! As Mark Twain said, “New Orleans food is as delicious as the less criminal forms of sin.”

We are confident that you will not find a better home base to experience all the charm, beauty, exoticism, mysticism of the Crescent City as you will in the Penny-Farthering home. It is the embodiment of all that is gracious and romantic about New Orleans. Built at the peak of the Victorian Era, the Penny-Farthering House encapsulates the grace and open spacing of homes throughout New Orleans designed by architects smitten with the design styles of the British West Indies. This home was completely remodeled, inside and out in 2015. Inside the home, you will find either a brand new state of the art appliance or fine antique piece of furniture capturing the allure and magnetism of the homes ancestry while providing the best of modern convenience to provide you with the utmost comfort during your stay. Inside you will find a main floor with raised ceilings, stunning oak floors a spacious kitchen.

Once inside, we hope you will enjoy the St. James piano rescued and refurbished after a long and storied history from Cathedrals to an Indian reservation. We only wish the piano could talk because we are certain it would have some stories to tell…this piano, this town and this home do not live in the past, they live with the past. History surrounds and breathes through them enriching all who are fortunate to cross their path. When in this home you will feel like you are in another time and another place in a most glorious fashion. To help you soak it all in take some time to enjoy the rockers on the front porch and take in the multi-million dollar homes which adorn Walnut Street and the adjacent Audoban Park.

The Penny-Farthering home is a collaboration of original antique pieces and modern day luxuries and convenience. Sleep in comfort on 1000 thread count bedding in one of the brand new beds. This is a large, comfortable home with privacy in all four of the bedrooms. This immaculate home comes with everything brand new from the paint, carpet, hardwood flooring, furniture and TVs to the dishes and towels. Enjoy the inconspicuous 50 inch big screen as it rises from the media cabinet in the parlor or relax and view TV from one of the five other televisions located throughout Penny-Farthing.

The four bedrooms are classically acquainted to provide warmth and understated elegance in recognition and tribute to the history and soul of N’awlins; each of the four bedrooms has been professionally festooned in theme with a local treasure. Step into the master suite and you will be greeted by spectacular flowing draperies and window dressings in this French Victorian bedroom elegantly furnished in the 1890’s Renaissance Revival style once popular for the plantations lining St James Place. This room features not only luxury accoutrements’, but also an ensuite bath including a walk in closet and French Boudoir.

Step across the hall and Oh What a Wonderful World you will find in the Louis Armstrong Parlor, Satchmo Bedroom and Jazz Bath. We hope you will take a moment to read or just sit in the parlor and see if you can hear the New Orleans native’s one of a kind gravelly voice whisper through the walls. Or better yet, download Mr. Armstrong’s recording of Hello Dolly and give a listen – guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and some snap to your step.

The City of New Orleans Bedroom is dedicated not to the folk song, but the train that rides 900 miles on the Main Line of Middle America between Chicago and New Orleans. While this room is not a model of a refurbished Pullman Car, we hope that after a full day and night of enjoying NOLA, you will find sleep easy and maybe even feel a bit of the sweet rhythmic sway of rail travel.

In the Peacock Bedroom we have tried to recreate some of the glorious colors of the beloved pheasants from the Audobon Zoo across the street. If you can look at the majesty of the peacock’s magnificent train without smiling, we will be surprised. The ancient Greeks believed the Peacock to be immortal while in Babylon and Persia it was the guardian of royalty. We trust you will feel safe under the guise of our “Peacock Angel”

Please also spend some time upstairs in the Audubon Room so named after the famed New Orleans native known worldwide as a naturalist and artist whose drawings inspired the Audubon Society. Relax on Bevelo leather club chairs in the Audubon room as you overlook the beauty and serenity of the newly remodeled backyard with fountain.  We hope this room will bring you tranquility and inspiration to enjoy not only the back yard, but all of the wonderful nature New Orleans has to offer. Or simply step into the rear courtyard garden, grab a seat and close your eyes and you just may be able to hear Oscar winners Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer rehearsing their lines for the romantic comedy Elsa and Fred which was filmed in New Orleans during which time Ms. MacLaine was a guest at Penny-Farthering. Indeed, while in the area, don’t be surprised to see one of the famous athletes, actors, musicians or writers who call Uptown home visiting with a local character as all are equal in this unique community.

As much as we love the home, if you are in New Orleans, you need to experience all it has to offer and you will be centrally located to do that as Penny-Farthering lies in the heart of Uptown which is home to Tulane University, Audubon Park and the Audubon Zoo. Uptown is the historically rich section of New Orleans that many say best resembles the romantic dreams of the Antebellum South. Like the neighboring Garden District, designated a National Historic Landmark, exploring Uptown and is an adventure in itself to observe the former plantation homes, Corinthian columns and fine grillwork which line the streets under moss hung oaks and stunning magnolias. Penny-Farthing brings it all to you with a entrance path just three homes down from Audubon Park (with a world class walk/run/bike trail and golf course) and the one-of-a kind Audubon Zoo and its white alligators straight from the swamps of Louisiana.

This neighborhood breathes charm and class as most all the homes welcome you with true gas burning lanterns. This is the perfect home to enjoy a jazz festival or celebrate a graduation at one of the nearby universities. The St. Charles Trolley is a quick walk through the park and can take you on a scenic ride into the French Quarter or Downtown both just minutes away. This area is the safest in the city with by private security and alarm systems that are monitored. All we ask is that you respect our neighbors, many of whom are the finest in NOLA. Also, if you allow any ghosts inside, please make sure they are of the variety which have a sense of humor, enjoy great music, better food and, most of all, fun. Except for the friendly variety, we guarantee Penny-Farthing is 100% Ghost Free.

Great location in Uptown New Orleans, across the street from Audubon Park, easy walk to Zoo, Magazine Street, and historic St. Charles Avenue. Would recommend and would stay again.

this property should not be rented to the public. There are significant things wrong. Here is a short list-- Property is dirty. not clean enough for a rental. Many appliances not working. No toiletries for a month stay. We had to buy toilet paper, towels, garbage bags etc. Much of the furniture is broken. There are visible plumbling leaks with standing fetid water. This house is just not acceptable. I decided to stay because I had commitments to other people and couldn't find an acceptable solution for a whole month on short notice.

We had a really nice stay overall, and found everything as pictured. A few things to mention though: 1) The trash bin had not been left for pickup as others on the street were. It was very full and smelled bad when standing on the porch. 2) The neighbor across the street was angry that we were staying at VRBO guests. She said the house is not supposed to be rented, ostensibly it’s in violation of the HOA. Also, the house is for sale.

We enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home. The location is walking distance to the St. Charles streetcar, Audubon Park & Zoo, and Tulane University. (You can get to almost everything on the streetcar.) A short drive to shopping and restaurants on Magazine St. We loved playing a game of pool at the end of our long days of touring the city and Tulane campus. We never turned on the TV! The home was clean and cool and the beds are comfortable, plenty of room for everyone. Great kitchen and nice to have a garage for the car. Staying here made our trip to New Orleans and Tulane University wonderful.

The pictures looked good of the house, but they dont adequately convey just how charming and wonderful this house was! It was an incredible location. There are a few quirks that come with any historic house, but overall I absolutely loved it and would stay there again.

The house is located in a beautiful part of the city and centrally located to a lot of amenities. It great to have off-street parking. Some of the home decor (bedding, curtains) needs to be replaced as they were stained and worn. Needs a very thorough cleaning in some areas.

I'm a native who returned for a one week visit. The location was excellent...right next to a park entrance, close to Tulane where my daughters were taking a course, easy access to downtown without having to go through the Garden District (via Claiborne). The house is awesome and we loved the sitting room (chess table) and the full size pool table on the first floor. Huge garage. A/C worked spectacularly. Host was great. 100% good.

The house is wonderfully located in a beautiful old NOLA neighborhood. The house is chockfull of character including New Orleans charm, antiques and kitsch! On top of that, the home is extremely comfortable ! The king size beds are great - the kitchen well stocked - and the front porch perfect for morning coffee!

Visiting New Orleans for a wedding at Audubon Park, this was a perfect place for adult siblings to stay! We had the best time hanging out on the front porch, chatting with folks as they walked by, and enjoying the lovely spring weather. It's a nice walk to the St. Charles streetcar so the French Quarter is an enjoyable ride away. The park is amazing - so close and so extensive! There's a private security company that patrols the street - we noticed they watched as we arrived home late one night - not in a menacing way but to be sure we got into our house safely. The house is nicely decorated and spacious for several adults. The kitchen didn't have a lot for pots & pans but we were able to do one nice dinner together there. When we first arrived there was a very smoky smell in the house - fortunately it was nice outside so we were able to open windows, run fans, and air it out. Could use a little work to freshen up the master bedroom air! Overall a great place. Jenny was easy to work with and we would definitely recommend the house and/or stay there again.
